Going Beyond Counting First Authors in Author Co-citation Analysis
The present study examines one of the fundamental aspects of author co-citation analysis (ACA) - the way co-citation
counts are defined. Co-citation counting provides the data on which all subsequent statistical analyses and mappings
are based, and we compare ACA results based on two different types of co-citation counting - the traditional type that
only counts the first one among a cited work's authors on the one hand and a non-traditional type that takes into
account the first 5 authors of a cited work on the other hand. Results indicate that the picture produced through this non-traditional author co-citation counting contains more coherent author groups and is therefore considerably clearer. However, this picture represents fewer specialties in the research field being studied than that produced through the traditional first-author co-citation counting when the same number of top-ranked authors is selected and analyzed. Plasma medicine is a young field that shows great promise, particularly for the treatment of chronic wounds. Cold atmospheric plasma (CAP) allows to heal these highly problematic wounds. This effect has been well established: numerous clinical trials report the beneficial effects of cold plasma on healing. However, the causes are only partially understood.Wound healing is a very complex phenomenon consisting of several phases, but CAP impact, which is specific to each phase, are known.Nonetheless, while studies highlight the impact of CAP on various aspects of wound healing, the fundamental mechanisms at the cellular and molecular levels are much less understood.This thesis tackle, the mechanisms of CAP positive effects, and the development of new plasma devices. First, we explored the effect of CAP on the mesenchymal migration of primary human fibroblasts and the underlying molecular mechanisms.CAP was then decomposed in order to understand the origin of its beneficial effect.The results show that individual migration becomes more efficient through the stimulation of Arp2/3 activity and that the syngergy between reactive oxygen species and the electric field produced by the plasma is responsible for this phenomenon.Second, we developed an innovative plasma device using sintered glass (diffusive configuration). We then compared this device to already well characterize devices. This comparison was made on a physical, chemical, and biological level. The diffusive configuration induces an intense electric field, produces very few chemical species, and increases collagen secretion without inducing any negative effects. Standard configurations show a low-intensity electric field, produce larger quantities of chemical species, and increase cell proliferation but induce a negative effect during long treatment. Together, these results demonstrate that the beneficial effect of cold plasma is based on synergy between the electric field and reactive oxygen species and pave the way for the design of an innovative new plasma devices for wound treatment.La médecine du plasma est un jeune domaine qui est très prometteur, notamment pour la cicatrisation des plaies et des brûlures. Le plasma froid à pression atmosphérique (CAP) aide la cicatrisation de ces plaies très problématiques. Cet effet n’est plus à démontrer : de nombreux essais cliniques s’accordent sur les effets bénéfiques du CAP sur la cicatrisation. Cependant, les causes ne sont que partiellement comprises.La cicatrisation est un phénomène très complexe composé de plusieurs phases. L’effet du CAP, sur les différentes phases de la cicatrisation, est bien documenté.Néanmoins, si des études mettent en évidences l’impact du CAP sur les différents aspects de la cicatrisation, les mécanismes fondamentaux aux niveaux cellulaire et moléculaire sont bien moins compris. Cette thèse aborde certains mécanismes impliqués dans l’effet bénéfique du CAP et le développement d’un nouveau dispositif plasma.Premièrement, nous avons exploré l’effet du plasma froid sur la migration mésenchyme des fibroblastes primaires humains et la mécanistique moléculaire sous-jacente. Puis, l’effet de deux constituants principaux produit par le CAP, le champ électrique d’une part, certaines espèces réactives de l’oxygène et de l’azote de l’autre a été analysé.Il en résulte que la migration individuelle devient plus efficace à travers une stimulation de l’activité de Arp2/3 et que la synergie entre les espèces réactive de l’oxygène et le champ électrique produit par le plasma est responsable de ce phénomène.Deuxièmement, nous avons mis en place un dispositif plasma innovant utilisant du verre frité, nommé configuration diffusive. Puis, nous avons comparé ce dispositif à des dispositifs déjà bien connus. Cette comparaison a été faite sur le plan physique, chimique et biologique. La configuration diffusive induit un champ électrique intense, produit très peu d’espèce chimique et augmente la sécrétion de collagène sans induire d’effet négative aux cellules. Les configurations standards montrent un champ électrique moins intense, produisent en plus grande quantité d’espèces chimiques et augmentent la prolifération cellulaire, mais induisent un effet négatif lors de long traitement.Ensemble, ces résultats démontrent que l’effet bénéfique du plasma froid repose sur une synergie entre le champ électrique et les espèces réactives de l’oxygène, et ouvrent la voie à la conception de nouveau dispositif plasma pour optimiser le traitement des plaies
Variations on the Author
“Variations on the Author” discusses two of Eduardo Coutinho’s recent films (Um Dia na Vida, from 2010, and Últimas Conversas, posthumously released in 2015) and their contribution to the general question of documentary authorship. The director’s filmography is characterized by a consistent yet self-effacing form of authorial self-inscription: Coutinho often features as an interviewer that rather than express opinions propels discourses; an interviewer that is good at listening. This mode of self-inscription characterizes him as an author who is not expressive but who is nonetheless markedly present on the screen. In Um Dia na Vida, however, Coutinho is completely absent form the image, while Últimas Conversas, on the contrary, includes a confessional prologue that moves the director from the margins to the center of his films. This article examines the ways in which these works stand out in the filmography of a director who offers new insights into the notion of cinematic authorship
Appropriate Similarity Measures for Author Cocitation Analysis
We provide a number of new insights into the methodological discussion about author cocitation analysis. We first argue that the use of the Pearson correlation for measuring the similarity between authors’ cocitation profiles is not very satisfactory. We then discuss what kind of similarity measures may be used as an alternative to the Pearson correlation. We consider three similarity measures in particular. One is the well-known cosine. The other two similarity measures have not been used before in the bibliometric literature. Dispelling the Myths Behind First-author Citation Counts
We conducted a full-scale evaluative citation analysis study of scholars in the XML research field to explore just how different from each other author rankings resulting from different citation counting methods actually are, and to demonstrate the capability of emerging data and tools on the Web in supporting more realistic citation counting methods. Our results contest some common arguments for the continued
use of first-author citation counts in the evaluation of scholars, such as high correlations between author rankings by first-author citation counts and other citation
counting methods, and high costs of using more realistic citation counting methods that are not well-supported by the ISI databases. It is argued that increasingly available digital full text research papers make it possible for citation analysis studies to go beyond what the ISI databases have directly supported and to employ more

We have done our best to complete the author checklist relating to the use of animals in the hut study. Note that the objective for the hut study was to evaluate the IRS treatment applications for residual efficacy against Anopheles mosquitoes, including the local An. coluzzii mosquito population. Cows were only used to attract mosquitoes into the huts and no tests were carried out directly on the cows. The author checklist is intended for use with studies where experiments are carried out on animals, which is why we have had such difficulty in completing this for the hut study, as many of the questions do not relate to how the cows were used
