Cult: A Composite Novel
Cult (redacted)
The first component of the thesis is a composite novel called Cult which falls into two parts with seven narratives in each. Part 1 tracks the protagonist, Ellen, from her first involvement with the cult through to her eventually leaving it. Although fiction, the first half of the book answers the kinds of questions the author is asked when people discover that she was once a sannyasin (a follower of the guru Bhagwan Shree Rajneesh). While the experiences of meditation, group therapy and communal living are all faithfully rendered within the stories, the need for strong characters, narrative drive and a lightness of touch takes precedence.
Part 2 picks up Ellen’s story some twenty or so years later and explores what becomes of her in middle age. It also looks at other groups in society, such as academia, the law and the internet dating community which each have their own jargon, hierarchies, rituals and rules but are not considered to be cults.
The book examines the question raised in the Epigraph, ‘how do we be together when we feel so alone’ with a focus on relationships other than the familial and the romantic.
Collisions, Chasms and Connections: a Performative Exploration of the Composite Novel Form
The second part of the thesis is both a critical and creative response to three contemporary American books: Olive Kitteridge by Elizabeth Strout; A Visit from the Goon Squad by Jennifer Egan; and Legend of a Suicide by David Vann. The critical element comprises a close reading of the three books; a chronological reconstruction of their overarching storylines; and a consideration of what their authors have said about writing the books. It concludes that, in the composite novel, the simultaneous presentation of multiple views and storylines operate much like a 3D image to give the impression of depth to the characters and situations rendered. The creative element of the essay is a playful and personal response to the texts
This diploma thesis focuses on social media usage in B2B sales. Based on the systematic literature review conducted by the author, he has found out that recent researchers (Salo, 2017) suggest further research in the area of how and in which sales phase should various social networking sites, technologies and plugins used. To further fill this research gap, author decided to identify these social media and their usage among B2B salespeople in the so-called social selling process. The social selling process in this thesis applies mainly to acquiring new prospects and tangentially to taking care of existing clients (follow-up step). Author has chosen a qualitative research method via conducting 10 in-depth semi-structured interviews to reveal these instruments as well as motivation of a sales person on why to use social media in the selling process. The collected data was analyzed using Thematic analysis to ensure the right procedure and to identify main themes which crystalized into 2 main strategic approaches in social selling. These approaches (Push and Pull) include practical examples of concrete activities which sales people can use in their daily jobs and are presented with focus on practicality and ease of implementation. These also form the main contribution of author`s research. In the last part, author mentions challenges in social selling and recommended managerial implications for salesforce
The disenfranchisement of prisoners : Roach v Electoral Commissioner & Anor - modernity v feudalism
David Brown takes a road trip to Canberra for the Roach fixture at the High Court where modernity is attempting a fight-back against the resurrection of civil death. With echoes of Hunter S Thompson as rugby league follower, the author recounts a trip to Canberra to observe a case in which Vickie Lee Roach, an Indigenous woman prisoner, challenged (successfully as it later turns out) the Howard government's 2006 legislation disenfranchising all serving prisoners.\ud

Dvouúrovňová hra v kontextu životního prostředí: Postavení ruské federace v mezinárodních klimatických jednáních
Příspěvek pojednává o ruské environmentální politice s využitím teorie dvouúrovňové hry, kterou v roce 1988 představil Robert D. Putnаm v článku „Diplomacy and Domestiс Politiсs: The Logiс of Two-Level Gаmes“. Autor odkrývá místo klimatické agendy v ruské mezinárodní a domácí politice. The paper deals with the Russian environmental politics, using the theory of the Two-Level Game, presented by Robert D. Putnаm in 1988 in the article “Diplomасy аnd Domestiс Politiсs: The Logiс of Two-Level Gаmes”. With the help of the mentioned theory two international treaties regarding climate issue: the Kyoto Protocol and the Paris Agreement are examined on the international as well as on the domestic level. The author tries to define the character and the size of the so-called win-sets that each of the negotiation brought to Russia, based on this information the comparison of the benefits of each of the treaty is possible to be done. The paper also shows the development of the Russian environmental policy as the chosen period of time covers around 20 years of the history of modern Russia. The author uncovers the place of the climate agenda in the Russian international and domestic policy
Multidisciplinary “Boot Camp” Training in Cellular Bioengineering to Accelerate Research Immersion for REU Participants
Research Experiences for Undergraduates (REU) sites widely serve as the first major research gateway for undergraduates seeking a structured research experience. Given their lack of prior research skills, and the highly compressed duration of the REU programs, these students frequently encounter barriers to a seamless transition into a new laboratory environment. We hypothesized that the design of a unified short course on laboratory and analysis techniques could serve as a pivotal orientation experience. Our goal was to rapidly align student expertise to their summer research goals while also integrating the student participants into a cohesive learning community. This article discusses the design and outcomes of a Cellular Bioengineering Boot Camp, which is offered at the outset of the 10-week REU site at Rutgers. The Boot Camp provides hands-on, supervised training for techniques and procedures that are common among projects. The training establishes a common language and baseline for the REU students and allows their first laboratory experiences to be with each other, and creates an immediate network of peers and mentors. Surveys before and after the Boot Camp and at the end of the summer indicated a significant improvement in student proficiency in the techniques that was retained throughout the summer. We believe that the Boot Camp approach can be tailored to the specifics of each REU site and its associated projects and research foci.Peer reviewe
Konflikty v mezinarodních v týmech
Cílem této diplomové práce je definovat mezinárodní tým a konflikty a určit základní kompetence pro manažera a zaměstnance mezinárodních týmů. Členové mezinárodních týmů by měli mít více dovedností a kompetencí, než ti, kteří patří k homogenním týmům. This thesis aims to define international team and conflicts and identify the essential competencies for a manager and employee of international teams. It is argued that everyone in an international team should possess more skills and competencies than those who belong to homogeneous teams. As a result, representatives of international team must be able to understand culturally diverse backgrounds manage conflicts constructively, and comprehend different strategies to handle sensitive cases. The research begins by reviewing literature on culture, cultural dimensions in the team and conflict. A survey was performed on 167 individuals from various cultural backgrounds to analyze their attitudes towards multicultural teams and their managers. Some findings are in accordance with theories and some show different interesting opinions experienced pragmatically by the respondents. Eventually, the author based on the results obtained from the empirical research and the theoretical literatures has created a recommendation

Survival Models in Financial and Insurance Practice
The submitted book is a habilitation thesis that clearly presents the methods used in classical survival analysis. It focuses mainly on various types of regression models, with an emphasis on flexible non-parametric and semi-parametric models. The methods presented in the book are applied to real data from financial and insurance practices, in accordance with the book's title. The analysis in financial area are focuses on data related to peer-to-peer (P2P) lending provided by Lending Club, a US-based company. The insurance issue is then represented by data on critical illness insurance provided by one of the commercial insurance companies operating in the Czech Republic. From a methodological standpoint, the publication offers an almost complete overview of methods within the framework of classical survival analysis. Among the advanced survival models, the so-called mixture cure models and competing risks models are introduced and applied in the publication, including one of the possibilities of linking them. The main contribution of the monograph, which is not found in any other Czech language publication, is its comprehensive coverage of survival analysis, according to the author. From a statistical point of view, the monograph provides interesting findings especially in the context of the advanced survival models applied to P2P credit data.
