'Life is Baseball' vs. 'A Vida é Futebol': The Translation of Sport-Specific Metaphors from English to European and Brazilian Portuguese

Soccer is the most popular sport in Brazil and Portugal, while in the United States (US) it is baseball. An incredible number of metaphors and idioms are generated in the languages where these sports are played. Due to their cultural specificity, such expressions are particularly difficult to translate, and thus constitute a significant challenge for both machine and human translators (HTs). This paper explores the different possibilities available for the translation of metaphorical baseball expressions from English to Portuguese. The study is based on the TV Corpus, plus a corpus previously compiled by the author. The translations produced by three freely available online MT systems (Google, DeepL and Systran) will be compared with HTs used in the subtitles of TV-series, including both Brazilian and European Portuguese subtitles. The results of the analysis show that sports-related metaphorical and idiomatic expressions remain a blind spot for English-Portuguese MT systems

El reto de las metáforas deportivas: Traducción automática vs. Traducción humana. The challenge of translating sports metaphors: Machine Translation vs. Human Translation

This paper studies different possibilities for translating sports metaphors in fictional TV series. The study focuses on 'The TV-Corpus' and a corpus compiled by the author in previous works on Internet TV series. The analysis focuses on the translation of this type of expression carried out by humans, on the one hand, and machines, on the other. I compare the translations of these systems with some human translations provided in the translated subtitles broadcast in the corresponding series from Netflix, Amazon Prime, and others. The analysis aims to study the metaphorical dimension of the expression and compare the results obtained by the different translations performed by the MT systems and by a human translator. Finally, I discuss the scope and limits of MT systems to achieve adequate and accurate translations of metaphors and idiomatic expressions compared with the possibilities of human translation. The analysis results show that metaphorical and idiomatic expressions remain a blind spot of machine translation. Hence, a quality translation depends on the human factor, either through post-editing or direct human translation. Metaphorical dimension of idioms in TV series for German, Norwegian and Spanish audiences

Over recent years, internet TV series have grown in popularity to become one of the audiovisual products with the highest audiences worldwide. The Covid crisis, with limitations on movement, has further increased their success during 2020-21. English is by far the most common language for such productions, which are typically offered to non-anglophone viewers in translated format, with either subtitles or dubbing. One of the main challenges in translation here concerns the use of idioms, since these do not always have a fixed equivalent in the target language. Taking as a starting point a corpus of drama series from Netflix and Amazon Prime, this study considers the metaphorical dimension of idioms in original TV series in English and the subtitling of these in German, Norwegian and Spanish. The aim is to analyze the strategies used in the translation process, and to look at the differences between the original dialogues and the translated subtitles. The data are described from a cognitive and contrastive perspective, according to the methodology developed by the author. The results of the analysis show a general trend towards the reduction of metaphorical expressions in the translated subtitles. Significant differences are found between the translations into the three target languages under examination. A surprising finding is that there are more similarities between the German and Spanish translations than between those into German and Norwegian, despite these latter two belonging to the same Germanic linguistic family

ChatGPT and MT-Systems: Advantages and Limitations when Translating English to Spanish and Portuguese

    No full text
The translation landscape is changing significantly with the advent of genAI-powered chatbots like ChatGPT. Machine translation (MT) systems have been at the forefront of translation technology since the 1950s, but the new genAI models represent a transformative shift. This study explores the advantages and limitations of translating English to Portuguese and Spanish using Machine Translation (MT) systems and ChatGPT. MT systems have improved significantly over the last years, and large language models (LLMs), democratized recently by ChatGPT, have also recently proved to be effective at translating text. Nevertheless, these systems still face challenges in accurately capturing different languages' cultural specificities, nuances, and complexities. This paper analyzes translations performed by various chatbots and MT systems, including Systran, Google Translation, DeepL, Chat AI GPT (free), Bing Chatbot (powered by ChatGPT), and Google's Bard. The data analysis is presented from a cognitive and contrastive perspective, following the author's recent methodology. The aim is to evaluate their overall performance and effectiveness. The results reveal that translating from English to Spanish and Portuguese presents significant challenges for all systems and tools, including grammatical and semantical issues. Additionally, notable differences have been observed between the translations performed by the MT-Systems and those from genAI chatbots. Finally, this paper will discuss the advantages and limitations of MT-translation systems and their implications for the role of human translators

Going Beyond Counting First Authors in Author Co-citation Analysis

The present study examines one of the fundamental aspects of author co-citation analysis (ACA) - the way co-citation counts are defined. Co-citation counting provides the data on which all subsequent statistical analyses and mappings are based, and we compare ACA results based on two different types of co-citation counting - the traditional type that only counts the first one among a cited work's authors on the one hand and a non-traditional type that takes into account the first 5 authors of a cited work on the other hand. Results indicate that the picture produced through this non-traditional author co-citation counting contains more coherent author groups and is therefore considerably clearer. However, this picture represents fewer specialties in the research field being studied than that produced through the traditional first-author co-citation counting when the same number of top-ranked authors is selected and analyzed. Reasons for these effects are discussed
