The GH-IGF-I axis and breast cancer

    No full text
MD (Res)Breast cancer remains one of the most common causes of death amongst women today. Worldwide approximately 1.3 million women are diagnosed as having breast cancer every year. Much research has been done in trying to unravel the cause and behaviour of breast cancer and hormonal influences are known to play a role. In particular, two hormones known as growth hormone (GH) and insulin-like growth factor (IGF-1) have been found to play an important role in breast cancer growth and development. It has been found that women with breast cancer have higher levels of IGF-1 in their blood compared with women without breast cancer. Further studies have shown that if IGF-1 is added to breast cancer cells in laboratory conditions they grow rapidly. This evidence points to a strong link between IGF-1 and breast cancer. The majority of circulating IGF-1 is made by the liver in response to growth hormone, but as IGF-1 is also found in most cells in the human body, it is uncertain whether its possible effects on breast cancer may be due to local production of IGF-1 by breast cancer cells or to IGF-1 circulating in the blood. This research aims to study the link between IGF-1, GH and breast cancer. In order to do this, small specimens of breast tissue will be taken from women who are undergoing surgery for treatment of their breast cancer. Most cells removed will be cancer cells, but a rim of normal cells will surround them. I will then look at the different levels of IGF-1, growth hormone and other related hormones produced by the cancer or normal cells. During further research, I will aim to keep these cells alive for a few hours and see how they respond when various hormones are added to them. This research will give us more information about the hormonal control of breast cancer growth and may lead to novel treatments for breast cancer in the future

Predestination in Milton's Paradise Lost and De Doctrina Christiana

    No full text
In 1992 William B. Hunter challenged Milton\u27s authorship of the heterodox treatise De Doctrina Christiana. The mainstream of the debate following it was faithfully recorded on the pages of the Studies in English Literature but there were a number of articles published in both Milton Studies and Milton Quarterly that added to the discussion of the treatise\u27s provenance. In this paper I aim to develop the issue of predestination in the above-mentioned debate based on Paul R. Sellin\u27s article "Milton\u27s Paradise Lost and De Doctrina Christiana on predestination." In his article, Sellin tries to maintain Hunter\u27s assumption that Milton could not have been the author of the treatise, by demonstrating a discrepancy between De Doctrina Christiana and Paradise Lost in the matter of predestination. I, on the contrary, hoped to show by detailed analysis the uncanny resemblance between the two works regarding predestination, especially when observed from a broader perspective of the doctrine of grace

A systematic analysis of extinction at 3 months of age

    No full text
In operant conditioning, "extinction" refers to a procedure in which reinforcement is consistently withheld after conditioned responding. The "extinction effect" is observed when learned responding declines to its baserate, or extinguishes. Evidence suggests that the original association is preserved through extinction because conditioned responding can be restored. A hallmark of extinction is that it dissipates with time, and as subjects again exhibit the conditioned response. This phenomenon, spontaneous recovery, led Pavlov (1927) to conclude that learning is permanent. Extinction manipulations have been used in research with infants to eliminate undesirable behavior, to study emotion, and as test periods in instrumental learning preparations. However, it is unknown whether the properties of extinction are the same for human infants as for human adults and nonhuman animals. In order to systematically characterize the extinction process early in ontogeny, 3-month-olds were first trained using the mobile conjugate reinforcement paradigm to kick to move an overhead mobile. Once the response was acquired, the extinction was presented and spontaneous recovery was assessed over the course of the normal retention interval for the task. The duration and temporal placement of the extinction phase were manipulated. Infants did not reduce ongoing responding during the extinction manipulation, but the extinction effect was evident during subsequent testing. More than three minutes of nonreinforcement immediately following acquisition was effective at decreasing conditioned responding during subsequent long-term retention test. Paradoxically, when the extinction session was separated from acquisition by at least one day, 3 min was sufficient to cause a reduction in conditioned responding, while 6 min enhanced retention. No evidence of spontaneous recovery was observed in this study.M.S.Includes bibliographical references (p. 44-52)

Res publica - res christiana? Biblical motivation and the Czech Brethren's perspective of christian political engagement

    No full text
This diploma thesis entitled Res publica - res christiana? Biblical motivation and the Czech Brethren's perspective of christian political engagement deals with possible theological basis for Christian political engagement. The first chapter maps the biblical principles and passages inspiring the work of Christians in today's society. In the second chapter, the author deals with the life and work of the most important czech protestant theologian of the 20th century J. L. Hromádka. On specific examples of his public activities and theological statements, the author shows the key ideas and experiences that form the approach to this issue still present in the Evangelical Church of Czech Brethren. Both of these chapters form the basic basis for the author's final chapter, which outlines his own theological perspective. He put this perspective in the context of personal experience with political activism in defense of liberal democracy in the Czech Republic

La banlieue souhaitée et non-souhaitée. Annexions et Identité urbaine. L'exemple de Christiana (Oslo) au XIXe siècle

[eng] Abstract In this article, the author explains the suburban problems endured by a town in nothern Europe, Christiana, during the 19th Century. The town had a complicated suburban history during the Classic Era, as the suburbs were confined to a restricted perimeter. The size of the town grew phenonemally during the 19th Century, leading new suburbs to develop. Initially, everyone, both the town autorities and the people from the surrounding countryside alike, rejected these new suburbs. From 1850 onwards, however, the suburbs were only accepted, they were even wanted. The author explains the reasons fot this evolution.
