    Differential Contribution of Calcium-Activated Proteases and ER-Stress in Three Mouse Models of Retinitis Pigmentosa Expressing P23H Mutant RHO

    Autosomal dominant retinitis pigmentosa (adRP) is mainly caused by mutations responsible for rhodopsin (RHO) misfolding. Although it was previously proved that unfolded RHO is retained into the endoplasmatic reticulum (ER) eliciting ER-stress, consequent mechanisms underlying photoreceptor degeneration need to be further clarified. Several animal models of RHO mutants have been developed for this purpose and for development of neuroprotective treatments. Here, we compared two of the most used models of adRP, the P23H mutant RHO transgenic and knock-in mouse models, in order to define which are their limits and potentials. Although they were largely used, the differences on the activation of the cell death pathways occurring in these two models still remain to be fully characterized. We present data proving that activation of calpains is a mechanism of cell death shared by both models and that molecules targeting calpains are neuroprotective. Conversely, the role of ER-stress contribution to cell death appears to be divergent and remains controversial

    Early Neolithic potters of the Italian Middle Adriatic region

    This paper presents the preliminary results of the study of the Early Neolithic pottery production in the Marche region, Italy (VI mill. BC). The main goal of this research is to expand the knowledge of pottery manufacturing processes associated to the typical Central Adriatic Impressed Ware, at present poorly understood. All sites under analysis are located in the piedmont hills of the Apennine Mountains, except one which is on the coast. This study aims to highlight synchronic and diachronic variability in pottery technology, to identify common traits and to investigate the raw materials selection and exploitation strategies. The pottery assemblages are examined by means of an integrated approach which include techno-typological and archaeometric analyses. The environmental factors, the distribution of resources, the technology solutions taken by these early Neolithic communities are considered

    Going Beyond Counting First Authors in Author Co-citation Analysis

    The present study examines one of the fundamental aspects of author co-citation analysis (ACA) - the way co-citation counts are defined. Co-citation counting provides the data on which all subsequent statistical analyses and mappings are based, and we compare ACA results based on two different types of co-citation counting - the traditional type that only counts the first one among a cited work's authors on the one hand and a non-traditional type that takes into account the first 5 authors of a cited work on the other hand. Results indicate that the picture produced through this non-traditional author co-citation counting contains more coherent author groups and is therefore considerably clearer. However, this picture represents fewer specialties in the research field being studied than that produced through the traditional first-author co-citation counting when the same number of top-ranked authors is selected and analyzed.     NOx emission prediction from 3-D complete modelling to reactor network analysis

    This paper describes the activities carried out for the development and the use of CRFD codes and related procedures for the design of industrial furnaces. The objective is to predict the emission of pollutants, such as nitrogen oxides, in combustion flue gases. This prediction may be correctly accomplished using a detailed kinetic mechanism, which cannot be directly implemented on CRFD codes due to actual computational limits (both in terms of memory and CPU time consumption). A new approach has been developed: analysing the 3D CRFD flow fields, an "equivalent" chemical reactors network model is extracted with corresponding residence time distributions and overall reactor properties, and the detailed kinetic calculation is performed on this simpler scheme. The approach has been successfully applied to different scale of furnaces such as pilot plants and industrial boilers, low-NOx burners and glass furnaces. In the papers a description of the CRFD codes is given, and the methodology to extract a chemical ideal reactor network from CFRD fields is presented. Finally, an application of the procedure on the Monfalcone #3 steam generator is discussed
