Experimental High-Frequency Parameter Identification of AC Electrical Motors

    No full text
In order to predict conducted electromagnetic interference in inverter-motor drive systems, high-frequency (HF) motor models are requested and the involved parameters have to be available. In previous studies, the authors have presented an accurate HF model for induction motors and they have defined the procedures to identify the model parameters. In this paper, these results are extended to several types and sizes of industrial ac motors such as induction, synchronous reluctance (without interior permanent magnets), and brushless motors. The model parameter-identification procedure has been improved, and it is based on a least-squares data fitting applied to the measured magnitude and phase-frequency-response curves of the phase-to-ground and the phase-to-neutral impedances. The aim of this paper is to provide quick indications to select the suitable values of the HF model parameters, with reference to the size and type of the ac motor, to evaluate the HF voltage and current components in inverted-fed ac motor system

Experimental Characterization of Plasma Sources for Space Propulsion

    No full text
The focus of this research program is experimentally characterizing and developing advanced plasma propulsion systems. Experimental measurements have been combined with numerical simulations to examine the physical processes taking place in the analyzed thrusters. The first part of the project, performed under the EU FP7 HPH.com program, is dedicated to the development of an electrodeless radio-frequency plasma thruster. An experimental facility is designed and constructed, including several plasma diagnostic systems. The plasma properties in the radio-frequency discharge are monitored through optical spectrometers and a microwave interferometer, while the plasma beam is characterized using a retarding potential analyzer and a current probe. Extensive development tests have resulted in an optimized plasma source based on a novel antenna and a particular magnetic field pattern generated by arrays of radially-magnetized permanent magnets. Additionally, the main guidelines for the design of the final prototype of the HPH.com thruster have been determined. The plasma dynamics inside the thruster have been studied by means of the 3D particle-in-cell code F3MPIC, focusing on the ejected plasma plume characterized by the formation of a supersonic ion beam. In the second part of the project, the Stanford Cylindrical Cusped Field Thruster is experimentally and numerically investigated, with particular attention given to the exit plane acceleration region near the top magnetic cusp. Time-averaged xenon ion laser-induced-fluorescence measurements have mapped the total ion velocity vectors in this region. The velocity field is correlated to the ion beam current profile, the magnetic field and the electrostatic potential field. The thruster is also simulated using F3MPIC. The consistent experimental and numerical results give physical insight into the mechanisms of ion acceleration and the role of the magnetic field topology in determining ion trajectories and plume divergence. Finally, we propose an innovative dual-stage propulsion system comprised of a traveling magnetic field accelerator. The plasma produced in a primary ionization source is injected into the second stage where it is accelerated by a forward propagating magnetic field. The acceleration mechanism is numerically studied using a 1D particle-in-cell model. Preliminary experiments utilize a microwave source as the primary ionization stage and a transmission line circuit to generate the traveling magnetic field

Plume characterisation of a low power external discharge plasma thruster

A miniaturised External Discharge Plasma Thruster (XPT) is developed and characterised from 50 - 250 W. The thruster performance and discharge envelope are recorded as a function of xenon and krypton mass flow rate at various anode powers. The thrust of the miniaturised XPT on krypton decreases by up to 35 % and the anode efficiency decreases by up to 60% for a similar anode operation. The ion current density and utilisation efficiencies are estimated as the thruster operation is varied between xenon and krypton. As the mini-XPT is operated on krypton the beam current remains relatively constant as the anode power increases. At higher anode voltages the current utilisation for krypton is noted to decrease. The plasma properties are presented as the anode power is varied between xenon and krypton at a constant mass flow rate. The plasma potential and density decrease by up to 35 % as the operation is varied between 0.6 mg/s of xenon and krypton. Spatial maps are presented identifying the plasma potential and density at a constant thruster operation of 65 W and 0.6 mg/s of xenon mass flow rate. The axial electric field distribution is presented as a function of the plasma potential and axial distance away from the thruster
