Going Beyond Counting First Authors in Author Co-citation Analysis

    No full text
The present study examines one of the fundamental aspects of author co-citation analysis (ACA) - the way co-citation counts are defined. Co-citation counting provides the data on which all subsequent statistical analyses and mappings are based, and we compare ACA results based on two different types of co-citation counting - the traditional type that only counts the first one among a cited work's authors on the one hand and a non-traditional type that takes into account the first 5 authors of a cited work on the other hand. Results indicate that the picture produced through this non-traditional author co-citation counting contains more coherent author groups and is therefore considerably clearer. However, this picture represents fewer specialties in the research field being studied than that produced through the traditional first-author co-citation counting when the same number of top-ranked authors is selected and analyzed. Reasons for these effects are discussed

Dispelling the Myths Behind First-author Citation Counts

We conducted a full-scale evaluative citation analysis study of scholars in the XML research field to explore just how different from each other author rankings resulting from different citation counting methods actually are, and to demonstrate the capability of emerging data and tools on the Web in supporting more realistic citation counting methods. Our results contest some common arguments for the continued use of first-author citation counts in the evaluation of scholars, such as high correlations between author rankings by first-author citation counts and other citation counting methods, and high costs of using more realistic citation counting methods that are not well-supported by the ISI databases. It is argued that increasingly available digital full text research papers make it possible for citation analysis studies to go beyond what the ISI databases have directly supported and to employ more sophisticated methods

Flame-Retardant Design and Protection for Building Materials

    No full text
Building materials often need to meet fire safety requirements that are set by building and fire codes, and for this to be successfully met, it requires close attention to the tests required by the codes, as well as understanding the material chemistry and end use requirements of the building material. A material that can meet a fire requirement but doesn't have the required mechanical and thermal properties for its end-use application is not a success. This chapter covers building components that require flame retardancy, including some discussion of building codes and standards. Fire protection of specific building materials including roofing and siding, insulation, and structural materials is discussed, including some insight into how to design fire-safe materials for these applications

    Good Governance, Welfare, and Transformation

Market conforming institutions are a precondition for a thriving and stable economy. This is the upshot of the Washington consensus or, of somewhat earlier origin, the "Eucken hypothesis" Another hypothesis of Eucken has it that market conforming institutions are the product of a strong state. However, more general and more important than the strong state is good governance. In this paper I refer to it as the "Lorenzetti hypothesis". The paper tries to figure out the mechanisms by which good governance and economic order influence economic outcome. Then the two hypotheses are tested for two aspects of economic outcome: productivity as measured by GNP per capita over a wide range of countries and transformation success as measured by GNP growth over the European transformation countries. The tests confirm the theoretical expectation that good governance is more important than good orderGovernance; Economic order; Development

Expandable graphite in polyurethane foams: The effect of expansion volume and intercalants on flame retardancy

Several expandable graphites (EGs), differing in Expansion volume but with the same mean size, are compared as flame retardants in polyurethane (PUR) foams. Not only common sulfur-intercalated graphites are investigated but also a new one intercalated with phosphorus. The main aim of this article is to understand which properties of EG are important for its flame retardancy effectiveness in PUR foams. Thermal stability, flammability, and fire behavior are analyzed through limiting oxygen index and cone calorimeter tests. Detailed characterization of the phosphorus-intercalated graphite is also provided as well as physical–mechanical characterization. The results show that the well-known sulfur-intercalated graphites and the one with phosphorus both enhance the residue yield, induce a protective layer, and thus efficiently flame-retard PUR foams. While the expansion volume of the EGs had a surprisingly limited influence on the performance of the foams, at least in the range tested, the most important feature Controlling the effectiveness of EG in terms of flame retardant PUR foams was the type of intercalant. The presence of EG affected the physical–mechanical properties of the foams; however, no significant effect of the expansion volume or intercalant type has been revealed on the physical–mechanical properties of the foams
