Nutritional composition and phenolic compounds and nitrate content in eatable vegetables obtained by conventional and certified organic grown culture

    No full text
The aim of this work was to analyse some nutritional characteristics in eatable vegetables obtained by conventional and organic grown culture, focusing on vegetable parts that are generally rejected by consumers. Samples of Chinese cabbage (Brassica rapa (syn. B. campestris) spp. pekinensis)) and maize (Zea mays L.) had been analysed under raw conditions and after thermal treatment in order to test modifications in protein, lipids, carbohydrate, phenol, nitrate content and dry weight. According to our results, thermal treatment modified some characteristics. Even if for most parameters significant differences between foods obtained by the two cultivation procedures had not been observed, in organic samples a higher concentration of nitrate was found. Furthermore, domestic processing, such as cooking in boiling water, seems to have a dramatic effect on phenolic content on both kinds of food, and, as a consequence, on antioxidant activity

A study of the effectiveness of the VCT service at the NMMU

    No full text
The students are the future economic backbone of the country and it is essential that measures are taken to reduce the number of new HIV infections in this segment of the population. Free voluntary counselling and testing for HIV was introduced at the Nelson Mandela Metropolitan University as one of the prevention strategies to curb the spread of HIV. This service has grown steadily over the years but strategies need to be formulated and implemented to improve the existing service and thereby increase the utilisation of the testing service. This treatise takes the form of an investigative survey involving literature review and a survey of all the individuals who utilised the VCT service over a three month period. The author has attempted to portray the general views and best practices of experts in the field of VCT service delivery. The identified best practices were used as an assessment tool to determine to what extent the VCT service at the NMMU complies with national and international standards. The quantification of these insights must be viewed with caution since the survey sample was relatively low due to time constraints. It has been shown that the VCT service at the NMMU largely complies with national and international standards although several recommendations have been presented for consideration

Semarang city posed the highest ranking as the city with the most case of HIV and AIDS amongst cities of Central Java Province, namely 175 cases and the second highest rank on amount of HIV and AIDS sufferer on Semarang City, by the occupations still held by housewife until March of 2008. Mangunharjo village, Tugu sub-district constitutes as region with high risk of HIV & AIDS infection, because in addition of as coastal region, it also close with brothel and bus station. Therefore, the author interested to study attitude of the pregnant mother toward HIV & AIDS and VCT on their sphere, at Mangunharjo village, Tugu Sub-district, Semarang, year of 2008. The sort of research was analytic correlation by using survey method and cross sectional approach. The 37 of pregnant mothers were taken as sample in this research, which are selected by total sampling or saturated sampling. Most of the pregnant mothers in Mangunharjo village were on range < 30 years old (86.5%), education level on intermediate group (54.1%), occupation as housewife (81.1%), spouse's occupation: factory labour (37.8%), income (> 715.700,00 or higher than average minimum wage) those are 89.2%. 37.8% of them had known any about HIV & AIDS and VCT; 40.5% respondents believed to information from their friends and spouses about HIV & AIDS and VCT; 62.2% have a well disposed about HIV & AIDS and VCT; 89.2% of them were not interest to take VCT. Chi-square test result showed the relationship between pregnant mother's knowledge about HIV & AIDS and VCT and their attitude about HIV & AIDS and VCT (p=0.007). Their believe about HIV & AIDS and their confidence about benefit of VCT by demeanour (p=0.033), source of information with attitude (p=0.011), their believe toward their friends' and spouses' demeanour about HIV & AIDS and VCT with attitude (p=0.019). Analysis result with logistic regression showed pregnant mother confident toward their friends' and spouses' demeanour about HIV & AIDS and VCT was the most dominant factor that is very influence their attitude about HIV & AIDS and VCT. Suggestion, for midwifes ought to provide elucidation to the pregnant mother about HIV & AIDS spreading especially its sense, precautionary, its spreading to their baby; HIV examination method; service and procedure of VCT; target and benefit of VCT and its place, also about voluntary nature of VCT, free of charge, and the result report high confidentiality

Sensitivity analysis for buckling characterisation using the vibration correlation technique

    No full text
The Vibration Correlation Technique (VCT) is a non-destructive method to predict buckling loads for imperfection-sensitive structures. While successfully used to validate numerical models and predict experimental buckling loads, recommendations for defining the VCT experiment are scarce. Here, its sensitivity towards the number of load steps and the maximum load level measured is studied, and an uncertainty quantification of the measured frequency affecting the VCT prediction is performed First, a series of finite element (FE) models representing nominally identical cylinders, and validated by buckling experiments, are used to perform a sensitivity study. When no frequency deviations are introduced in the FE results, a positive correlation between the VCT predictions and the maximum load used for measurements is found, the number of load steps used being only relevant in reducing the errors. Introducing frequency deviations deterred the predictions correlation with the maximum load, while using more load steps reduced this influence. Second, a sensitivity study based on experimental data confirmed most of the trends previously observed using the FE results, the exception being a poor prediction sensitivity as a function of the maximum load, owing to several cylinders for which the VCT method gave predictions that progressively decreased with increasing the load.Green Open Access added to TU Delft Institutional Repository ‘You share, we take care!’ – Taverne project https://www.openaccess.nl/en/you-share-we-take-care Otherwise as indicated in the copyright section: the publisher is the copyright holder of this work and the author uses the Dutch legislation to make this work public.Aerospace Structures & Computational Mechanic

Robustness of empirical vibration correlation techniques for predicting the instability of unstiffened cylindrical composite shells in axial compression

    No full text
Thin-walled carbon fiber reinforced plastic (CFRP) shells are increasingly used in aerospace industry. Such shells are prone to the loss of stability under compressive loads. Furthermore, the instability onset of monocoque shells exhibits a pronounced imperfection sensitivity. The vibration correlation technique (VCT) is being developed as a nondestructive test method for evaluation of the buckling load of the shells. In this study, accuracy and robustness of an existing and a modified VCT method are evaluated. With this aim, more than 20 thin-walled unstiffened CFRP shells have been produced and tested. The results obtained suggest that the vibration response under loads exceeding 0.25 of the linear buckling load needs to be characterized for a successful application of the VCT. Then the largest unconservative discrepancy of prediction by the modified VCT method amounted to ca. 22% of the critical load. Applying loads exceeding 0.9 of the buckling load reduced the average relative discrepancy to 6.4%.Aerospace Structures & Computational Mechanic

Voluntary Counseling and Testing (VCT) is an effort to reduce the incidence of HIV in pregnant women. The author conducted research on VCT with characteristics of maternal age, gestational age, parity, education, and occupation. The purpose of this study was to determine the characteristics of pregnant women undergoing a VCT examination. This research was conducted in November-December 2018, the population in this study were all pregnant women who did VCT examination as many as 130. The number of mothers who did VCT based on age 20 years-35 years was 102 (78.5%). The number of mothers who did VCT based on the age of trimester 1 pregnancy was 122 people (93.8%). The number of mothers doing VCT based on primipara/grande multiparity was 80 people (61.5%). The number of mothers undergoing VCT was based on higher education 100 people (76.9%). The number of mothers who do VCT based on work does not work as many as 130 people (100%). Judging from the results of research based on the theory that many are appropriate and some are not appropriate both from age, gestational age, parity, education, and employment. Thus, the most variable is jobs as many as 130 people (100%). All health workers, especially midwives, should further improve counseling services on VCT testing for pregnant women and especially in matters relating to HIV disease in pregnant women and to reduce maternal mortality and infant mortality rates, especially in West Java
