    Distraction techniques for face and smile aesthetic preventing ageing decay

    Modern concepts in the world of beauty arise from popular models, beautiful faces of actors document a bi-protrusive asset with high tension for soft tissues. Facial symmetry has been proposed as a marker of development and stability that may be important in human mate choice. For various traits any deviation from perfect symmetry can be considered a reflection of imperfect development. Additionally, bi-protrusive profile is dependent on the hormonal level regardless of male or female sex. The goal of maxillofacial surgery is to provide best results both for aesthetic and functional aspects. Following these new concepts of aesthetic of the face, new surgical procedure by osteodistraction techniques will lead to a very natural result by harmonizing the face also preventing aesthetic decay in aging faces. Ten cases with a feedback on the aesthetic results using the fivepoint scale of Likert after orthognatic surgery performed following distraction new techniques in combination with ancillary surgical procedures. The aesthetic results in all patients were highly satisfactory. All the patients accepted the new aesthetic of the face avoiding elements of discrepancy and consequently medico-legal problems

    Lincomycin solar photodegradation, algal toxicity and removal from wastewaters by means of ozonation

    Antibiotic molecules have been reported among the xenobiotics present at trace levels in sewage treatment plant (STP) effluents and aquatic environment. Lincomycin, one of the most used in clinical practices whose presence in the STP effluents has been often documented, is submitted to an extensive investigation to assess its persistence in the environment and toxicity towards different algal strains. The possibility to remove the lincomycin from water by means of ozonation is demonstrated and a reduction of toxicity of ozonated solutions on S. leopoliensis, with respect to untreated solutions containing this compound, is obtained even just for 1 h of treatment. Kinetic constants for the attack to lincomycin of ozone (from 1.53×105 M−1 s−1 at pH=3.0 and 4.93×105 M−1 s−1 at pH=6.7) and OH radicals (4.37×109 M−1 s−1 at pH=5.5 and 4.59×109 M−1 s−1 at pH=7.5) are also evaluated

    Oral commensal microorganisms perform very important functions such as contributing to the health of the host. However, the oral microbiota also plays an important role in the pathogenesis and development of various oral and systemic diseases. The oral microbiome may be characterized by a higher prevalence of some microorganisms than others in subjects with removable or fixed prostheses, depending on oral health conditions, the prosthetic materials used, and any pathological conditions brought about by inadequate prosthetic manufacturing or poor oral hygiene. Both biotic and abiotic surfaces of removable and fixed prostheses can be easily colonized by bacteria, fungi, and viruses, which can become potential pathogens. The oral hygiene of denture wearers is often inadequate, and this can promote oral dysbiosis and the switch of microorganisms from commensal to pathogens. In light of what emerged from this review, fixed and removable dental prostheses on teeth and on implants are subject to bacterial colonization and can contribute to the formation of bacterial plaque. It is of fundamental importance to carry out the daily hygiene procedures of prosthetic products, to design the prosthesis to facilitate the patient’s home oral hygiene practices, and to use products against plaque accumulation or capable of reducing oral dysbiosis to improve patients’ home oral practices. Therefore, this review primarily aimed to analyze the oral microbiome composition in fixed and removable implant or non-implant-supported prostheses wearers in healthy and pathological oral conditions.     Impact of smoking on salivary lipid profile and oxidative stress in young adults : a comparative analysis between traditional cigarettes, e-cigarettes, and heat-not-burn products

    : BACKGROUND Smoking nicotine is considered to be one of the most harmful addictions, leading to the development of a number of health complications, including many pathologies in the oral cavity. The aim of this study was to examine the effect of smoking traditional cigarettes, e-cigarettes, and heat-not-burn products on profiles of salivary lipids and lipid peroxidation products in the unstimulated and stimulated saliva of healthy young adults with a smoking habit of up to 3 years. MATERIAL AND METHODS We enrolled 3 groups of 25 smoking patients each and a control group matched for age, gender, and oral status. In saliva collected from patients from the study groups and participants from the control group, the concentrations of sphingolipids: sphingosine, sphinganine, sphingosine-1-phosphate, ceramides, and salivary lipid peroxidation products - malondialdehyde (MDA) and 4-hydroxynonenal (HNE) - were measured. The normality of distribution was assessed using the Shapiro-Wilk test. For comparison of the results, one-way analysis of variance (ANOVA) followed by post hoc Tukey test was used. RESULTS We demonstrated that each type of smoking causes a decrease in the concentration of salivary lipids, and there was an increased concentration of salivary MDA and 4-HNE. CONCLUSIONS Smoking in the initial period of addiction leads to an increase in the concentration of lipid peroxidation products through increased oxidative stress, leading to disturbance of the lipid balance of the oral cavity (eg, due to damage to cell membranes)

    Do Continuous Rotating Endodontic Instruments Extrude Fewer Apical Debris Than Reciprocating Instruments in Non-Surgical Endodontic Retreatments? A Systematic Review

    Background: All endodontic treatment techniques are associated with the extrusion of debris into periradicular tissues through the apex. The extrusion of apical debris can lead to delayed healing or even therapy failure. It is possible to reduce the extrusion into periapical tissues through various approaches. The objective of this systematic review is to evaluate whether, in cases of non-surgical endodontic retreatment, reciprocating instruments cause greater extrusion of debris compared to instruments with continuous rotation. Methods: A search was conducted on PubMed, Ovid MEDLINE, and the Web of Science. The inclusion criterion was in vitro studies comparing apical extrusion in endodontically treated elements using continuously rotating and reciprocating files. Results: The search on scientific databases yielded 164 results, out of which only 16 were eligible for evaluation after screening. Conclusions: The authors of the research included in this review do not agree on the results obtained. Based on the articles analyzed in this systematic review, it remains unclear whether continuous rotation or reciprocating movement of the endodontic instrument can lead to significant differences in apical debris extrusion; it is not possible to provide a clear clinical recommendation regarding the choice of instrument movement for endodontic procedures

    CBCT-Based Assessment of Vapor Lock Effects on Endodontic Disinfection

    Background: The phenomenon of vapor lock, characterized by the formation of gas bubbles, poses challenges in achieving effective cleaning and debridement during endodontic treatments. This study aimed to evaluate the presence of vapor lock and to quantify its volume in the root canal system. Methods: Ten single-rooted teeth were selected, and their root canals were shaped using the Protaper Next system and irrigated with 5% NaOCl and 17% EDTA. Then, the canals were irrigated with a solution made of contrast medium (8 M cesium chloride solution) mixed in equal proportions with 5% sodium hypochlorite. CBCT scans were performed to analyze the presence and volume of bubbles in different canal thirds. Statistical analysis was conducted to compare the number of bubbles and the percentage of space occupied by them. Results: The results demonstrated the presence of vapor lock in all treated teeth, with a higher concentration of gas bubbles in the apical canal third. The formation of gas bubbles hindered the cleaning and debridement procedures, particularly in the apical region. Conclusions: This study provides evidence of the occurrence of vapor lock and highlights the importance of enhancing the cleaning phase in endodontic treatments to minimize bubble formation or eliminate them once formed. These findings contribute to a better understanding of the challenges posed by vapor lock and suggest avenues for optimizing endodontic procedures
