    Anaerobic digestion of the Barcelona central food market organic wastes: Experimental study

    Experiments carried out to obtain data for a preliminary design of an anaerobic digestion plant treating the organic wastes coming from a large food market are described. Four hydraulic retention times (8, 12, 14 and 20 days) were tested in 3-litre laboratory digesters. The methane yields were high (around 0·478 m3 CH4/kg VS added). Kinetic analysis, using a first-order model, resulted in a kinetic constant of 3·1 day-1 and an ultimate methane yield of 0·489 CH4/kg VS added. The biogeradability of the soluble and non-soluble fractions of the Volatile Solids (VS) is discussed. © 1991

    The design of the anaerobic digestion plant to treat the organic fraction of the wastes of a large food market is described, taking into account experimental data obtained in a previous study. A sensitivity analysis of the assumed operating conditions is carried out to test their influence on plant performance. The results show that the filter press is an important equipment in the plant. An economic study is also performed and shows the high profitability of the plant and the large influence of the landfilling costs on the economic indexes. © 1992

    A comparative analysis of the performance of digesters in the treatment of the organic fraction of municipal solid waste, sorted at source or mechanically, is carried out. The comparison is performed in terms of the percentage of biodegradation achieved, the kinetics of the process and the biodegradability of the substrate. To help the comparison some mathematical relationships are deduced. Data from our own studies are considered in conjunction with data from the literature, most of which refers to pilot plants. © 1990

    Going Beyond Counting First Authors in Author Co-citation Analysis

    The present study examines one of the fundamental aspects of author co-citation analysis (ACA) - the way co-citation counts are defined. Co-citation counting provides the data on which all subsequent statistical analyses and mappings are based, and we compare ACA results based on two different types of co-citation counting - the traditional type that only counts the first one among a cited work's authors on the one hand and a non-traditional type that takes into account the first 5 authors of a cited work on the other hand. Results indicate that the picture produced through this non-traditional author co-citation counting contains more coherent author groups and is therefore considerably clearer. However, this picture represents fewer specialties in the research field being studied than that produced through the traditional first-author co-citation counting when the same number of top-ranked authors is selected and analyzed.
