    Torgny Lindgren och musiken

    No full text
Torgny Lindgren, born in 1938 and dead in 2017 was a member of the Swedish Academy but also one of the most popular writers of his time. Although four doctoral theses have been devoted to his novels, no thorough investigation has been undertaken of his lifelong interest in music. Born in Raggsjö, in the province of Västernorrland, he listened to the organ playing in churches and chapels in his youth. Even in ordinary farm houses pipe organs were built as a standard instrument, and "an organ tone" can be heard in many of his works. His masterpieces, such as Ormens väg på hälleberget (The snake's way on the rock), Norrlands Akvavit (The Aquavit of Norrland), Hummelhonung (Honey of the bumblebee) and Pölsa (Hash of lungs) are imbued with classical music, not least the organ music of J S Bach. Being av teacher of German Torgny Lindgren often went to Vienna, where he made himself acquainted with a vast repertoire of musical genres, particularly within the area of classicism and romanticism. If Bach is one of his favourites, Gustaf Mahler is another one. The polyphony in Mahler's symfonies attracted him particularly. Music represents to Lindgren a gate to heaven, something which became very close to his heart, especially after he converted to Roman Catholicism.
