New Stationary Frame Control Scheme for Three Phase PWM Rectifiers Under Unbalanced Voltage Dips Conditions
A new stationary frame control scheme for three-phase pulsewidth-modulation (PWM) rectifiers operating under unbalanced voltage dips conditions is proposed in this paper. The proposed control scheme regulates the instantaneous active power at the converter poles to minimize the harmonics of the input currents and the output voltage ripple. This paper's novelty is the development of a new current-reference generator implemented directly in stationary reference frame. This allows using proportional sinusoidal signal integrator (P-SSI) controllers for simultaneous compensation of both positive and negative current sequence components. No phase-locked loop (PLL) strategies and coordinate transformations are needed for the proposed current-reference generator. Experimental results are presented for a 20-kV A alternative current (ac)/direct current (dc) converter prototype to demonstrate the effectiveness of the proposed control scheme. A comparison with two other existing control techniques is also performed. Fast dynamic performance with small dc-link voltage ripple and input sinusoidal currents are obtained with this control scheme, even under severe voltage dips operating condition
Italian small villages: strengths and weaknesses of on-going strategies for revitalizing a fragile heritage
The depopulation of small villages in Italy is often due not only to socio-economic factors but also to the occurring of hazardous events that, very often, contributed to accelerate the depopulation process, leading sometimes to the total abandonment of inner areas. In Italy, a process addressed to guide and sustain communities living in inners areas in setting up new development perspectives aimed to increase the well-being of citizens and the employment opportunities and to consequntly slow down causes and dynamics of abandonment, has been started in 2012. A key step along this process was the approval of the National Strategy for Inner Areas (SNAI) in 2014. This paper, grounding on the analysis of two case studies selected among the pilot areas singled out by the SNAI, explores the role of socio-economic causes as well as of geomorphological and environmental factors in the abandonment of Italian small villages, shedding light on the persisting lack of multidimensional approaches to development policies. Such a lack might lead, once again, to marginalize the issue of risk prevention and mitigation, which represents, on the opposite, a precondition for the sustainable development of fragile territories
The shielding effect of phospholipidic bilayers on zinc oxide nanocrystals for biomedical applications
Zinc oxide nanocrystals (ZnO NCs), thanks to their unique properties, are receiving much attention for their use in nanomedicine, in particular for therapy against cancer [1]. To be efficiently employed as diagnostic and therapeutic (yet theranostic) tools [2], highly dispersed, stable and non-toxic nanoparticles are required. In the case of ZnO NCs, there is still a lack of knowledge about cytotoxicity mechanisms and stability in the biological context, as well as immunological response and haemocompatible features. Most of these above-mentioned behaviours strongly depends on physico-chemical and surface properties of the nanoparticles. We thus propose a novel approach to stabilize the ZnO NCs in various biological media, focusing on NC aggregation and biodegradation as a function of the surface functionalization. We synthesized bare ZnO NCs, amino-propyl functionalized ones, and lipid bilayer-shielded NCs, and we characterized their morphological, chemical and physical properties. The stability behavior of the three different samples was evaluated, comparing their biodegradation profiles in different media, i.e. organic solvents, water, and different simulated and biological fluids. The studies aim to investigate how the particle surface functionalizations, and thus chemistry and charge, could influence their hydrodynamic size, zeta potential and consequent aggregation and degradation in the different solvents. We demonstrated that bare and amino-functionalized ZnO NCs strongly and rapidly aggregate when suspended in both simulated and biological media. Long-term biodegradation analysis showed small dissolution into potentially cytotoxic Zn-cations, also slightly affecting their crystalline structure. In contrast, high colloidal stability and integrity was retained for lipid-shielded ZnO NCs in all media, rendering them the ideal candidates for further theranostic applications [3]. [1] P. Zhu, Z. Genotoxicity induced by fine urban air particulate matter in the macrophages cell line RAW 264.7
Recent studies support a participation of fine airborne particulate matter (PM) with an aerodynamic diameter less than 2.5 μm in the effects of air pollutants on health. Particulate matter was collected in an urban area of L'Aquila during the winter 2004. Fine particulate samples were analyzed by X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS) to determine the chemical inventory of the aerosol particle surfaces and to evaluate the weight of characteristic functional groups of the most frequent carbon-containing organic pollutant compounds (C-C/C-H, C-O/C-N, C{double bond, long}O, COOH). The most important contributor to the mass of fine particulate matter was carbon. The overall purpose of this work was to determine the in vitro toxicity and genotoxicity of fine PM in cultured macrophages (RAW 264.7 cells) since the biological target of inhaled PM are the pulmonary epithelium and resident macrophages. In parallel in vitro toxicity assays were used including cell viability and apoptosis. Genotoxicity was evaluated by the micronucleus (MN) assay. The viability of macrophages was assessed by the MTT method; apoptosis by an ELISA test for programmed cell death (PCD) was determined after RAW 264.7 cells treatment. Concentration of 1, 3 and 10 μg/cm2 of fine particles induced micronuclei in a dose-dependent manner. We also compared the effects of fine PM with those of fine carbon black particles (CB) in similar doses. Fine carbon black particles were consistently less genotoxic than the fine atmospheric particles, suggesting that the contaminants adsorbed on them (i.e. carbon-containing organic compounds in addition to metal oxides and metal salts) are involved in genotoxicity. Fine PM reduced cellular proliferation. Overall, the results presented here demonstrate the utility of in vitro tests in mouse cells for testing genotoxicity of urban air particulate matter. © 2006 Elsevier Ltd. All rights reserved
Going Beyond Counting First Authors in Author Co-citation Analysis
The present study examines one of the fundamental aspects of author co-citation analysis (ACA) - the way co-citation
counts are defined. Co-citation counting provides the data on which all subsequent statistical analyses and mappings
are based, and we compare ACA results based on two different types of co-citation counting - the traditional type that
only counts the first one among a cited work's authors on the one hand and a non-traditional type that takes into
account the first 5 authors of a cited work on the other hand. Results indicate that the picture produced through this non-traditional author co-citation counting contains more coherent author groups and is therefore considerably clearer. However, this picture represents fewer specialties in the research field being studied than that produced through the traditional first-author co-citation counting when the same number of top-ranked authors is selected and analyzed. Reasons for these effects are discussed
Appropriate Similarity Measures for Author Cocitation Analysis
We provide a number of new insights into the methodological discussion about author cocitation analysis. We first argue that the use of the Pearson correlation for measuring the similarity between authors’ cocitation profiles is not very satisfactory. We then discuss what kind of similarity measures may be used as an alternative to the Pearson correlation. We consider three similarity measures in particular. One is the well-known cosine. The other two similarity measures have not been used before in the bibliometric literature. Dispelling the Myths Behind First-author Citation Counts
We conducted a full-scale evaluative citation analysis study of scholars in the XML research field to explore just how different from each other author rankings resulting from different citation counting methods actually are, and to demonstrate the capability of emerging data and tools on the Web in supporting more realistic citation counting methods. Our results contest some common arguments for the continued
use of first-author citation counts in the evaluation of scholars, such as high correlations between author rankings by first-author citation counts and other citation
counting methods, and high costs of using more realistic citation counting methods that are not well-supported by the ISI databases. It is argued that increasingly available digital full text research papers make it possible for citation analysis studies to go beyond what the ISI databases have directly supported and to employ more
