    Provenance of basement erratics in Quaternary coastal moraines, southern McMurdo Sound, and implications for the source of Eocene sedimentary rocks

    This paper summarizes fieldwork conducted in 2007 and presents results of petrographical analyses of basement rocks that occur along with fossil-rich Eocene sedimentary erratics in moraines along the north-east flank of Mount Discovery in southern McMurdo Sound. The Eocene rocks are significant as they provide a rare glimpse into greenhouse environments at high southern latitudes. Basement erratics recovered from the moraines are petrographically similar to metamorphic and igneous rocks exposed in the Transantarctic Mountains at locations between the Carlyon and Skelton glaciers and/or within the drainage catchments of Mulock and Skelton glaciers. These new clast provenance data imply that the Eocene sedimentary erratics are most likely derived from outcrops that are currently located beneath the Ross Ice Shelf south and/or immediately east of Minna Bluff. The suite of basement and sedimentary erratics were transported to their present location by ice that flowed north-eastwards from the Skelton-Mulock region and was pushed westwards into southern McMurdo Sound by grounded ice flowing north from West Antarctica. Results from this study support prior reconstructions of ice flow during peak glacial intervals during the Miocene-Pleistocene including the Last Glacial Maximum

    Going Beyond Counting First Authors in Author Co-citation Analysis

    The present study examines one of the fundamental aspects of author co-citation analysis (ACA) - the way co-citation counts are defined. Co-citation counting provides the data on which all subsequent statistical analyses and mappings are based, and we compare ACA results based on two different types of co-citation counting - the traditional type that only counts the first one among a cited work's authors on the one hand and a non-traditional type that takes into account the first 5 authors of a cited work on the other hand. Results indicate that the picture produced through this non-traditional author co-citation counting contains more coherent author groups and is therefore considerably clearer. However, this picture represents fewer specialties in the research field being studied than that produced through the traditional first-author co-citation counting when the same number of top-ranked authors is selected and analyzed.     “Variations on the Author” discusses two of Eduardo Coutinho’s recent films (Um Dia na Vida, from 2010, and Últimas Conversas, posthumously released in 2015) and their contribution to the general question of documentary authorship. The director’s filmography is characterized by a consistent yet self-effacing form of authorial self-inscription: Coutinho often features as an interviewer that rather than express opinions propels discourses; an interviewer that is good at listening. This mode of self-inscription characterizes him as an author who is not expressive but who is nonetheless markedly present on the screen. In Um Dia na Vida, however, Coutinho is completely absent form the image, while Últimas Conversas, on the contrary, includes a confessional prologue that moves the director from the margins to the center of his films. This article examines the ways in which these works stand out in the filmography of a director who offers new insights into the notion of cinematic authorship

    Appropriate Similarity Measures for Author Cocitation Analysis

    We provide a number of new insights into the methodological discussion about author cocitation analysis. We first argue that the use of the Pearson correlation for measuring the similarity between authors’ cocitation profiles is not very satisfactory. We then discuss what kind of similarity measures may be used as an alternative to the Pearson correlation. We consider three similarity measures in particular. One is the well-known cosine. The other two similarity measures have not been used before in the bibliometric literature.     Dispelling the Myths Behind First-author Citation Counts

    We conducted a full-scale evaluative citation analysis study of scholars in the XML research field to explore just how different from each other author rankings resulting from different citation counting methods actually are, and to demonstrate the capability of emerging data and tools on the Web in supporting more realistic citation counting methods. Our results contest some common arguments for the continued use of first-author citation counts in the evaluation of scholars, such as high correlations between author rankings by first-author citation counts and other citation counting methods, and high costs of using more realistic citation counting methods that are not well-supported by the ISI databases. It is argued that increasingly available digital full text research papers make it possible for citation analysis studies to go beyond what the ISI databases have directly supported and to employ more sophisticated methods

    Progress report on new antiepileptic drugs: a summary of the Eigth Eilat Conference (EILAT VIII).

    The Eigth Eilat Conference on New Antiepileptic Drugs (AEDs)-EILAT VII, took place in Sitges, Barcelona from the 10th to 14th September, 2006. Basic scientists, clinical pharmacologists and neurologists from 24 countries attended the conference, whose main themes included a focus on status epilepticus (epidemiology, current and future treatments), evidence-based treatment guidelines and the potential of neurostimulation in refractory epilepsy. Consistent with previous formats of this conference, the central part of the conference was devoted to a review of AEDs in development, as well as updates on marketed AEDs introduced since 1989. This article summarizes the information presented on drugs in development, including brivaracetam, eslicarbazepine acetate (BIA-2-093), fluorofelbamate, ganaxolone, huperzine, lacosamide, retigabine, rufinamide, seletracetam, stiripentol, talampanel, valrocemide, JZP-4, NS1209, PID and RWJ-333369. Updates on felbamate, gabapentin, lamotrigine, levetiracetam, oxcarbazepine and new extended release oxcarbazepine formulations, pregabalin, tiagabine, topiramate, vigabatrin, zonisamide and new extended release valproic acid formulations, and the antiepileptic vagal stimulator device are also presented

    Background to the ANDRILL Southern McMurdo Sound Project, Antarctica

    During the austral spring of 2007, the Southern McMurdo (SMS) Project recovered a 1138.54 meter long drill core (AND-2A) from a 8.5 m thick floating seaice platform (~8.5 meters thick) over approximately 380 meters of water (77°45.488S; 165°16.613E) (Fig. 1). This demonstrated the ANDRILL Program’s continuing success in recovering high quality marine and glacimarine sedimentary drill core (> 98% core recovery) from high latitude ice-covered areas. A primary goal of the SMS Project, the second drillhole of the McMurdo Sound Portfolio (Harwood et al., 2006), was to recover an Antarctic marine sediment record depositied during the middle Miocene, which has long been held as one of the fundamental time intervals in development of the modern Antarctic ice sheets (e.g., Zachos et al., 2001; Shevenell et al., 2004). Deep-sea stable isotope records suggest the middle Miocene encompassed a change from the warm Mid-Miocene Climatic Optimum (MMCO), approximately 17.5 to 14.5 million years ago (Ma), to the onset of major cooling between approximately 14.5 to 13.5 Ma, which is commonly interpreted as the major cause of the formation of a quasi-permanent ice sheet in East Antarctica (e.g., Haywood et al., 2008, and references contained therein). The AND-2A drill core, Pleistocene to early Miocene in age (e.g., Acton et al., this volume), confirms its potential to establish a robust history of Neogene Antarctic ice sheet variation and climate evolution that can be integrated into continental and global records toward a better understanding of Antarctica’s role in the past, present and future global system. In particular, the recovery of middle Miocene Antarctic stratigraphic sequences will greatly improve the evaluation of global proxy records that invoke a change from a warm climatic optimum to the onset of major Miocene cooling. The uppermost section of AND-2A core, Pliocene to Pleistocene in age, shows a similar importance in providing an original record that will complement and build on coastal and fjord sediment records from previous drillcores west of the drill site (Dry Valley Drilling Project (DVDP) - 10, -11 and Cenozoic Investigation in the Western Ross Sea Project (CIROS) -2), and on the deeper water sedimentary record from the AND-1B drillcore in the McMurdo Ice Shelf area, all interpreted to reflect repeated Late Neogene alternation between ‘interglacial’ and ‘glacial’ conditions (Barrett, 2007; Naish et al., 2007, Naish et al., 2009). In addition to their paleoclimatic implications, the ongoing study of the drilled strata, with their variable clast compositions reflecting an evolving provenance, high content in Cenozoic volcanic detritus and fallout products, abundant structures related to brittle deformation, and a rich paleontological resource, have already demonstrated that they will provide important new information about the glacial history of the Ross Embayement, the volcanic evolution of the Erebus Volcanic Province and the tectonic evolution of both the Antarctic Rift system (Victoria Land Basin - VLB) and the adiacent sector of the Transantarctic Mountains (TAM). This volume presents the initial science results of the AND-2A drill-hole. It derives from the Webbased On-Ice Report and includes the results of corecharacterization activities conducted by science team members off-ice, prior to the core workshop held at Florida State University, Antarctic Marine Geology Research Facility, 30 April - 4 May 2008, where nearly 95 individuals presented their ongoing research on the AND-2A recovered material. This contribution provides background on the geological setting, site surveys, and stratigraphic prognosis prior to drilling. The rest of the volume contains 11 chapters and provides an operational overview of the drilling operations, the curation and management of the cores, ANDRILL’s education and outreach program, and the initial characterization of the drill core set out under major discipline areas

    The Tenth Eilat Conference on New Antiepileptic Drugs (AEDs)-EILAT X, took place in Eilat, Israel from the 25th to 29th of April 2010. About 200 basic scientists, clinical pharmacologists and neurologists from 25 countries attended the conference, whose main themes included learning from the past: Lessons learnt after 18 years of Eilat Conferences and Detecting assessing and preventing adverse effects of AEDs. Consistent with previous formats of this conference, a large part of the program was devoted to a review of AEDs in development, as well as updates on AEDs introduced since 1994. Like the previous EILAT (EILAT IX) manuscript, the current (EILAT X) manuscript focuses only on the preclinical and clinical pharmacology of AEDs that are currently in development. These include brivaracetam, carisbamate, 2-deoxy-glucose, ganaxolone, huperizine A, ICA-105665, NAX-5055, retigabine, perampanel, T-2007, valnoctamide and YK3089. Since the previous Eilat Conference (EILAT IX-2008) two new AEDs; eslicarbazepine acetate and lacosamide have been marketed and three new AEDs in development not included in the EILAT IX manuscript were added: ICA-105665, perampanel and valnoctamide. The CNS efficacy of these compounds in anticonvulsant animal models as well as other disease model systems are presented in Tables 1 and 2 and their proposed mechanism of action at summarized in Table 3
