Tunable zero and first sounds in ultracold Fermi gases with Rabi coupling

    No full text
We consider a weakly-interacting fermionic gas of alkali-metal atoms characterized by two hyperfine states which are Rabi coupled. By using a Born approximation for the repulsive interaction we determine the zero-temperature equation of state of this Fermi gas in D spatial dimensions (D = 1, 2, 3). Then, adopting the Landau-Vlasov equation and hydrodynamic equtions, we investigate the speed of first sound and zero sound. We show that the two sounds, which occur respectively in collisional and collisionless regimes, crucially depend on the interplay between interaction strength and Rabi coupling. Finally, we discuss for some experimentally relevant cases the effect of a trapping harmonic potential on the density profles of the fermionic system

Monopoles, abelian projection, and gauge invariance

A direct connection is proved between the non-Abelian Bianchi Identities (NABI's) and the Abelian Bianchi identities for the 't Hooft tensor. As a consequence, the existence of a nonzero magnetic current is related to the violation of the NABI's and is a gauge-invariant property. The construction allows us to show that not all Abelian projections can be used to expose monopoles in lattice configurations: each field configuration with nonzero magnetic charge identifies its natural projection, up to gauge transformations which tend to unity at large distances. It is shown that the so-called maximal-Abelian gauge is a legitimate choice. It is also proven, starting from the NABI, that monopole condensation is a physical gauge-invariant phenomenon, independent of the choice of the Abelian projection. © 2010 The American Physical Society

Strange correlators for topological quantum systems from bulk-boundary correspondence

    No full text
"Strange"correlators provide a tool to detect topological phases arising in many-body models by computing the matrix elements of suitably defined two-point correlations between the states under investigation and trivial reference states. Their effectiveness depends on the choice of the adopted operators. In this paper, we give a systematic procedure for this choice, discussing the advantages of choosing operators using the bulk-boundary correspondence of the systems under scrutiny. Via the scaling exponents, we directly relate the algebraic decay of the strange correlators with the scaling dimensions of gapless edge modes operators. We begin our analysis with lattice models hosting symmetry-protected topological phases and we analyze the sums of the strange correlators, pointing out that integrating their moduli substantially reduces cancellations and finite-size effects. We also analyze instances of systems hosting intrinsic topological order, as well as strange correlators between states with different nontrivial topologies. Our results for both translational and nontranslational invariant cases, and in the presence of on-site disorder and long-range couplings, extend the validity of the strange correlator approach for the diagnosis of topological phases of matter and indicate a general procedure for their optimal choice

Fault-Tolerant Computing with Single Qudit Encoding

We discuss stabilizer quantum-error correction codes implemented in a single multi-level qudit to avoid resource escalation typical of multi-qubit codes. These codes can be customized to the specific physical errors on the qudit, effectively suppressing them. We demonstrate a Fault-Tolerant implementation on molecular spin qudits, showcasing nearly exponential error suppression with only linear qudit size growth. Notably, this outperforms qubit codes using thousands of units. We also outline the required properties for a generic physical system to Fault-Tolerantly implement these embedded codes

Current transport properties and phase diagram of a Kitaev chain with long-range pairing

We describe a method to probe the quantum phase transition between the short-range topological phase and the long-range topological phase in the superconducting Kitaev chain with long-range pairing, both exhibiting subgap modes localized at the edges. The method relies on the effects of the finite mass of the subgap edge modes in the long-range regime (which survives in the thermodynamic limit) on the single-particle scattering coefficients through the chain connected to two normal leads

Axial anomaly in multi-Weyl and triple-point semimetals

    Get PDF
We derive the expression of the abelian axial anomaly in the so-called multi- Weyl and triple-point crossing semimetals. No simplifying restrictions are assumed on the symmetry of the spectrum. Three different computation methods are considered: the per- turbative quantum field theory procedure which is based on the evaluation of the one-loop Feynman diagrams, the Nielsen-Ninomiya method, and the Atiyah-Singer index argument. It is shown that the functional form of the axial anomaly does not depend on the Lorentz symmetry, but it is determined by the gauge structure group. We discuss the stability of the anomaly — stemming from the quantisation of the anomaly coefficient — under smooth modifications of the lagrangian parameters

Phase diagram and non-Abelian symmetry locking for fermionic mixtures with unequal interactions

The realization of experiments in ultracold multicomponent mixtures, also involving more atomic species, opened the way to the study of exotic quantum phases and unconventional superfluidity, as, for instance non-Abelian superfluid phases. In this paper we study the occurrence of non-Abelian symmetry-locked superfluid states in ultracold fermionic mixtures with four components, showing that such states can be studied in current day experiments with Yb171-Yb173 isotopes. We study the phase diagram in the presence of an attractive interaction between the species of two pairs of the mixture, and general (also repulsive) interactions between the species of each pair. This system can be physically realized, e.g., in mixtures of two different earth-alkaline species, both of them with two hyperfine levels selectively populated. We find an extended region of the diagram exhibiting a two-flavors superfluid symmetry-locking (TFSL) phase. The locking corresponds to the presence of a order parameter involving - in all the possible and distinct permitted ways - two fermions, one of them belonging to the first pair and the second to the other one. This TSFL phase is present also for not too large repulsive intrapair interactions and it is characterized by a global non-Abelian symmetry group obtained by locking together two independent invariance groups of the corresponding normal state. Explicit estimates are reported for the mixture of the fermionic isotopes Yb171-Yb173, indicating that the TFSL phase can be achieved also without tuning the interactions between Yb atoms
