    La particolarità e il forte valore simbolico dei resti archeologici del ponte romano di Rieti hanno rappresentato lo spunto per intraprendere, a partire dal 2013, delle attività di ricerca basate su un rilievo accurato mai eseguito prima, sebbene le attività di smontaggio degli anni Trenta del secolo scorso ne avrebbero consigliato l’esecuzione già allora. L’utilizzazione congiunta di tecniche di scansione laser 3D e di fotogrammetria sono risultate le più idonee tenuto conto anche delle particolari condizioni di inaccessibilità. Il contributo, basandosi sulle ricerche storiche fino ad oggi pubblicate, ha riguardato un’accurata analisi dei documenti d’archivio integrata dalle informazioni scaturite dal rilievo digitale che mai come in questo caso si è rivelato particolarmente efficace in relazione alle oggettive difficoltà di acquisizione diretta. Si ritiene che le ipotesi sulla conformazione del ponte originario, basate più su considerazioni strettamente tecnico-progettuali che su informazioni metriche di dettaglio (essendo gran parte della struttura sommersa nell’alveo del fiume), possano rappresentare un punto di partenza per l’implementazione di nuove forme di comunicazione e valorizzazione del patrimonio culturale anche grazie all’uso integrato di tecnologie digitali di realtà virtuale

    Going Beyond Counting First Authors in Author Co-citation Analysis

    The present study examines one of the fundamental aspects of author co-citation analysis (ACA) - the way co-citation counts are defined. Co-citation counting provides the data on which all subsequent statistical analyses and mappings are based, and we compare ACA results based on two different types of co-citation counting - the traditional type that only counts the first one among a cited work's authors on the one hand and a non-traditional type that takes into account the first 5 authors of a cited work on the other hand. Results indicate that the picture produced through this non-traditional author co-citation counting contains more coherent author groups and is therefore considerably clearer. However, this picture represents fewer specialties in the research field being studied than that produced through the traditional first-author co-citation counting when the same number of top-ranked authors is selected and analyzed.     “Variations on the Author” discusses two of Eduardo Coutinho’s recent films (Um Dia na Vida, from 2010, and Últimas Conversas, posthumously released in 2015) and their contribution to the general question of documentary authorship. The director’s filmography is characterized by a consistent yet self-effacing form of authorial self-inscription: Coutinho often features as an interviewer that rather than express opinions propels discourses; an interviewer that is good at listening. This mode of self-inscription characterizes him as an author who is not expressive but who is nonetheless markedly present on the screen. In Um Dia na Vida, however, Coutinho is completely absent form the image, while Últimas Conversas, on the contrary, includes a confessional prologue that moves the director from the margins to the center of his films. This article examines the ways in which these works stand out in the filmography of a director who offers new insights into the notion of cinematic authorship

    Appropriate Similarity Measures for Author Cocitation Analysis

    We provide a number of new insights into the methodological discussion about author cocitation analysis. We first argue that the use of the Pearson correlation for measuring the similarity between authors’ cocitation profiles is not very satisfactory. We then discuss what kind of similarity measures may be used as an alternative to the Pearson correlation. We consider three similarity measures in particular. One is the well-known cosine. The other two similarity measures have not been used before in the bibliometric literature.     Dispelling the Myths Behind First-author Citation Counts

    We conducted a full-scale evaluative citation analysis study of scholars in the XML research field to explore just how different from each other author rankings resulting from different citation counting methods actually are, and to demonstrate the capability of emerging data and tools on the Web in supporting more realistic citation counting methods. Our results contest some common arguments for the continued use of first-author citation counts in the evaluation of scholars, such as high correlations between author rankings by first-author citation counts and other citation counting methods, and high costs of using more realistic citation counting methods that are not well-supported by the ISI databases. It is argued that increasingly available digital full text research papers make it possible for citation analysis studies to go beyond what the ISI databases have directly supported and to employ more sophisticated methods

    We have done our best to complete the author checklist relating to the use of animals in the hut study. Note that the objective for the hut study was to evaluate the IRS treatment applications for residual efficacy against Anopheles mosquitoes, including the local An. coluzzii mosquito population. Cows were only used to attract mosquitoes into the huts and no tests were carried out directly on the cows. The author checklist is intended for use with studies where experiments are carried out on animals, which is why we have had such difficulty in completing this for the hut study, as many of the questions do not relate to how the cows were used

    Il saggio tratta il tema della linea curva nei disegni di Francesco Borromini mettendo in evidenza come, in essi, una sequenza di linee riesca a determinare una geometria complessa. L’analisi è condotta sul disegno AzRom 108, pianta del tiburio di Sant’Andrea delle Fratte, a Roma, la cui costruzione avvenne tra il 1652 e il 1665. L’analisi delle curve disegnate mette in evidenza come il tiburio prenda forma attraverso una sequenza di linee appartenenti a piani orizzontali sovrapposti, all’interno di una costruzione geometrica pensata nello spazio, ma che le governa tutte su di un unico piano. Borromini traccia, quindi, una pianta sinottica, costruendo nelle due dimensioni un ragionamento tridimensionale. La pianta, tralasciando il disegno parziale ad essa sovrapposto, riferibile ad una lanterna prevista e non realizzata, descrive la quota di sezione che taglia le quattro finestre, evidenziandola con un tratteggio inclinato, ma rappresenta con un segno continuo anche la proiezione della cornice sopra le colonne e quella più esterna di coronamento. Non compare invece, in questo disegno, il basamento che ha, sui quattro lati, compreso tra gli speroni angolari, un andamento concavo-convesso continuo, sul tipo di quello che modella la parte inferiore della facciata del San Carlino. All’analisi delle curve disegnate segue, quindi, un ragionamento sulle curve effettivamente realizzate, desunte dal modello tridimensionale ricavato dal rilievo 3D, e la verifica della relazione tra la curva sinusoidale del basamento e la linea spezzata del dado impostato sui piloni di crociera. Chiudono il saggio alcune considerazioni sulla continuità figurativa che, nell’opera di Borromini, lega le parti costitutive del tutto agli elementi di dettaglio. Egli, infatti, attribuisce alla linea, entità geometrica per definizione unidimensionale, lo stesso valore formale, sia che essa ritagli lo spazio minuto di una sequenza di modanature, sia che modelli l’interno o l’esterno di un invaso architettonico.In this essay we examine the theme of the curved line in Francesco Borromini’s drawings, highlighting how a sequence of lines manages to determine a complex geometry. We analyzed the drawing AzRom 108, plan of the tiburium of Sant’Andrea delle Fratte, in Rome, constructed between 1652 and 1665. The analysis of the curves shows how the tiburium takes shape via a sequence of lines lying on overlapping horizontal planes, within a geometric construction conceived in space, but which governs them all onto a single plane. Borromini then traces a synoptic plan, thus creating three-dimensional reasoning within two dimensions. The drawing, omitting the overlapping partial drawing referring to a lantern that had been envisaged but not realized, describes the plan elevation cutting through the four windows, evidenced with slanted hatching, also representing the projection of the cornice over the columns and the outer cornice with a continuous line. However, in this drawing the base with its continuous concave-convex profile on the four sides within the corner contraforts – of the type that forms the lower part of the San Carlino façade is not shown. The analysis of the drawn curves, therefore, is followed by a reasoning on those curves actually realized, derived from the three-dimensional model obtained with the 3D survey, and the verification of the relationship between the sinusoidal curve of the base and the ragged line of the dado stacked above the pylons of the crossing. The essay concludes with considerations on the figurative continuity which, in Borromini’s work, binds the constituent parts of the whole to the elements of detail. In fact, he attributes the same formal value to the line, a one-dimensional geometric entity by definition, whether it carves out the minute space in a sequence of moldings or models the interior or exterior of an architectural enclosur
