    No full text

The multifaceted aspects of ocular allergies: Phenotypes and endotypes

    No full text
Like the lung, skin, and nose, the external eye is a common target of allergic inflammation. Ocular allergy (OA) represents a collection of underestimated diseases of the eye observed in children and adults. The ocular manifestations are the expression of multifactorial immune mechanisms that generally have a good prognosis, but for a few patients, long term inflammation may remarkably reduce the visual function. Evidence suggests that other co-participant systems, including epigenetic, genetic, environmental, individual factors, sex hormones, and the central and autonomic nervous systems may influence the ocular response from distant sites. This is consistent with the concept that the eye is an organ fully integrated with the rest of the body and that the therapeutic approach should be holistic, dynamic, and personalized. For instance, androgens and estrogens binding to receptors on the ocular surface and the continuous cross-talking of neuromediators and growth factors with immune cells act to maintain the ocular surface homeostasis in response to environmental challenges. The immune system links and regulates the response of the ocular surface. Complex and incompletely understood mechanisms influence the innate and adaptive immune responses and generate different OA phenotypes and endotypes discussed in the present review

Going Beyond Counting First Authors in Author Co-citation Analysis

The present study examines one of the fundamental aspects of author co-citation analysis (ACA) - the way co-citation counts are defined. Co-citation counting provides the data on which all subsequent statistical analyses and mappings are based, and we compare ACA results based on two different types of co-citation counting - the traditional type that only counts the first one among a cited work's authors on the one hand and a non-traditional type that takes into account the first 5 authors of a cited work on the other hand. Results indicate that the picture produced through this non-traditional author co-citation counting contains more coherent author groups and is therefore considerably clearer. However, this picture represents fewer specialties in the research field being studied than that produced through the traditional first-author co-citation counting when the same number of top-ranked authors is selected and analyzed. Reasons for these effects are discussed

Domenico Parodi 1728-1736.

    Variations on the Author

“Variations on the Author” discusses two of Eduardo Coutinho’s recent films (Um Dia na Vida, from 2010, and Últimas Conversas, posthumously released in 2015) and their contribution to the general question of documentary authorship. The director’s filmography is characterized by a consistent yet self-effacing form of authorial self-inscription: Coutinho often features as an interviewer that rather than express opinions propels discourses; an interviewer that is good at listening. This mode of self-inscription characterizes him as an author who is not expressive but who is nonetheless markedly present on the screen. In Um Dia na Vida, however, Coutinho is completely absent form the image, while Últimas Conversas, on the contrary, includes a confessional prologue that moves the director from the margins to the center of his films. This article examines the ways in which these works stand out in the filmography of a director who offers new insights into the notion of cinematic authorship

Appropriate Similarity Measures for Author Cocitation Analysis

We provide a number of new insights into the methodological discussion about author cocitation analysis. We first argue that the use of the Pearson correlation for measuring the similarity between authors’ cocitation profiles is not very satisfactory. We then discuss what kind of similarity measures may be used as an alternative to the Pearson correlation. We consider three similarity measures in particular. One is the well-known cosine. The other two similarity measures have not been used before in the bibliometric literature. Finally, we show by means of an example that our findings have a high practical relevance.information science;Pearson correlation;cosine;similarity measure;author cocitation analysis

Nonlinear structural models in cableway transport systems

    No full text
In this paper an analysis of the nonlinear static behaviour of cable systems is developed by assuming a full nonlinear structural model of the cables based on elastic catenary results. The work is aimed at the possible application of this kind of structure to practical engineering systems such as among others ski lifts, electrical transmission lines, and cable systems in erection procedures of long-span bridges. The structural model is then implemented in a suitable computer code program able to analyse strong nonlinearities arising from low stress levels in the cables, where the uniqueness of the solution is not assured. Therefore, an appropriate simulation technique is required to capture the static equilibrium con®gurations of the cable systems subjected to a given external action. After a preliminary discussion of the relevant equations governing the behaviour of the structural model, a ®nite element analysis is developed to account for the main inherent features related to convergence and stability of the numerical algorithm used. Then, some illustrative numerical examples are developed by suitably calibrating the input data in such a way that strong nonlinearities stand out which enable the checking of the validity of the present analysis

Natural periods of long-span cable-stayed bridges

In this paper an analysis of the natural periods of long-span cable-stayed bridges is developed for both H-shaped and A-shaped towers. The analysis is carried out by using both an analytical and a numerical model of the bridge. The analytical developments refer to a continuous model of the bridge, which is founded on the assumption of diffused distribution of the stiffness of stays along the girder and of the prevailing truss behavior of the bridge. The dynamical equilibrium equations governing free vibrations are obtained considering the oscillations from the starting equilibrium configuration corresponding to the dead load action. Then, the tangent stiffness of the bridge corresponding to this configuration is considered. The analytical treatment of the dynamical equilibrium equations is based on the assumption that for long spans the bending stiffness of the girder is negligible compared to the global flexural stiffness of the bridge. Simple analytical results that are capable of capturing the main behavior characteristics of the bridge are obtained. Moreover, to give useful and suitable numerical comparisons, a discrete model of the bridge that accounts for the actual spacing of stays and the actual flexural stiffness contribution of the girder has also been developed. The numerical results obtained validate the simple analytical continuous model
