A context-aware framework for cultural heritage applications
Cultural Heritage represents in Italy a resource of inestimable value. This value gains more and more importance when embedded into the digital ecosystem of a Smart City, where several aspects must be considered: logistics, economy, tourism, entertainment and so on. This work presents a project, developed within DATABENC (a High Technology District for Cultural Heritage Management recently funded by Regione Campania) that aims at designing and developing a system based on a Service Oriented Architecture providing a set of context-aware applications for assisting users (e.g. Tourists, citizens, etc.) in the exploration and management of Single Smart Spaces (e.g. Indoor museum, archaeological site, historical archive, etc.). In particular, we propose several techniques for designing context aware applications by tailoring useful data and services in a given environment. In particular, a Slow Intelligence System approach is adopted for the tailoring of the services and contents. A case study for a real single smart space and some preliminary experimental results are presented and discussed
Contextual Aware Computing and Tourism: A Case Study
This paper introduces an Adaptive Context Aware App for the tourism. This app is based on the Context Dimension Tree: a graphical formalism for the context representation through its main components. The system is made available to the user as an adaptive mobile application, which allows a high degree of customization in recommending services and resources according to his/her current position and global profile. A case study applied to Praiano, a town on the Amalfi Coast, has been analyzed considering various users (Italian tourists, foreign tourists ...) and an experimental campaign has been conducted obtaining interesting results
A mobile context-aware information system to support tourism events
The experience of a touristic visit is a learning process very fascinating and interesting: the emotions can change according to the interests of the individuals, as well as of the physical, personal and social-cultural context. Applications for a mobile environment should take advantage of contextual information, such as position, to offer greater services to the user. In this paper, it is introduced a Context Aware Approach for the tourism. This approach is based on a graphical formalism for the context representation, the Context Dimension Tree, which plays a fundamental role in tailoring the target application data according to the user information needs. In particular, the proposed system is made available to the user as an adaptive mobile application, which allows a high degree of customization in recommending services and resources according to his/her current position and global profile. For example, the system can guide the tourist in the discovery of a town proposing him/her events mainly interesting for the user. A case study applied to a Christmas event in Salerno, an Italian town, has been analyzed considering various users and an experimental campaign has been conducted, obtaining interesting results
An ontological digital storytelling to enrich tourist destinations and attractions with a mobile tailored story
Storytelling has evolved over the years: its ability to enchant, transform and persuade makes it a formidable mean, malleable and customizable, but not easy to use. The use of new technologies allowing it to reach a far greater level of effectiveness: the audience can join in the storytelling process, thus impacting positively on engagement and facilitating the development of long lasting relationships. Our contribution is a revisited digital storytelling approach to discovery cultural heritage and tourism. Some of the benefits which digital storytelling brings to the tourism industry are that it enriches tourist destinations and attractions, it preserves and explores local culture and it shows the authentic experience of cultural tourism. Furthermore, digital storytelling develops cross-cultural understanding. In particular, we have chosen to employ an ontological model in order to realize a dynamic digital storytelling system, able to collect and elaborate social information and contents about the users giving them a personalized story based on the place they are visiting. The theoretical framework and experimental results are presented and described
A context aware approach for promoting tourism events: The case of artist's lights in Salerno
This paper introduces a Context Aware App for the tourism. This app is based on a graphical formalism for the context representation: The Context Dimension Tree. The aim is to propose a Context Aware approach that acts as dynamic support for the tourists, equipped of a mobile device which reacts to a change of context adapting user interface, according to his/her current position and global profile. For example, the system can guide the tourist in the discovery of a town proposing him/her events mainly interesting for the user. A case study applied to a Christmas event in Salerno, an Italian town, has been analyzed considering various users (Italian tourists, foreign tourists, etc.) and an experimental campaign has been conducted, obtaining interesting results
A context-aware approach for a collaborative, pervasive and adaptive digital storytelling
The paper introduces an approach for the realization of a dynamic and contextual storytelling engine that can allow the dynamic supply of narrative contents, not necessarily predetermined and pertinent to the needs and the dynamic behaviors of the users. In particular, the system adopts an adaptive and social approach, using a contextual model in order to realize a dynamic digital storytelling approach that makes the visit experience more appealing and immersive. A case study and some experimental results are presented and discussed
ApPoggiomarino: A Context Aware App for e-Citizenship
The diffusion of pervasive systems and the affirmation of the Internet network as technological glue among the individuals have deeply modified the everyday life of our society. In fact, the spread of Smartphones and Tablets has allowed the users to use contents and services everywhere. Among the environments that have been mainly affected by this ‘technological’ wave, the ‘City’ stands out. Therefore, with these new paradigms, the same concept of ‘City’ results altered and enriched with new potentialities. The City is able to talk to its inhabitants offering, according to the contexts, services and contents able to adapt themselves to the needs of the moment. In this paper, we intend to introduce a Context Aware methodology capable of giving contexts and services to the citizens according to their interests and their position inside the city. This methodology has been implemented in a ‘hybrid app’ and tested in a real context
An Adaptive Contextual Recommender System: a Slow Intelligence Perspective
This paper introduces an Adaptive Context Aware Recommender system based on the Slow Intelligence approach. The system is made available to the user as an adaptive mobile application, which allows a high degree of customization in recommending services and resources according to his/her current position and global profile. A case study applied to the town of Pittsburgh has been analyzed considering various users (with different profiles as visitors, students, professors) and an experimental campaign has been conducted obtaining interesting result
Chatbot for e-learning: A case of study
Nowadays the use of Chatbots is very popular in a large scale of applications especially in systems that provide an intelligence support to the user. In fact, to speed up the assistance, in many cases, these systems are equipped with Chatbots that can interpret the user questions and provide the right answers, in a fast and correct way. This paper presents the realization of a prototype of a Chatbot in educational domain: it has been developed a system to provide support to university students on some courses. The initial purpose has focused on the design of the specific architecture, model to manage communication and furnish the right answers to the student. For this aim, it has been realized a system that can detect the questions and thanks to the use of natural language processing techniques and the ontologies of domain, gives the answers to student. Finally, after the implementation of the designed model, experimental campaign was conducted in order to demonstrate its enforceability and efficiency
