Lessons from residential electricity demand analysis on the time of use pricing experiment in South Korea
This study analyzes a large-scale Time of Use (TOU) pricing experiment, the first attempt in South Korea, where a single standard rate under increasing block pricing is applied to all residential customers. The experiment was conducted for 2033 households living in 16 apartment complexes, where the control group was subject to the current standard rate, while the two treatment groups had different rate schedules under TOU pricing. Using the data that included both the pre-experimental period (September 2018-September 2019) and post-experimental period (October 2019-August 2020), we built on a two-level electricity demand model to analyze (1) if TOU pricing effectively transfers the peak demand of residential customers within a day, and (2) the changes in daily electricity consumption. We found that the households effectively reduced the peak demand in response to relatively high prices. However, unlike the control group, whose price responsiveness did not change over the sample period, that of the treatment groups decreased in the post-experimental period, thus resulting in increased intermediate consumption. The reason is the reduced price index resulted from the effective load transfer of households, combined with low intermediate price that does not reduce consumption. The price schedule under TOU pricing should be reexamined for social welfare.

Blockchain applications offer the feed supply chain incredible benefits and efficiencies in the goal to improve feed safety and animal health. The power of utilizing blockchain technology in feed supply chain transactions is in allowing parties to trade in the absence of a mediator or trusting relationship. This is the cornerstone of all blockchain applications - secure trading of ‘things’, both physical and virtual, without middlemen and historical relationships. However, implementation of the technology will experience hurdles and will require consensus among the industry for standards and methods of data collection and sharing. In addition, the cost of entry to access the data and who will pay for it will be a driving factor in the success of blockchain technology adoption. Blockchain Technology and the Potential Applicability in the Feed Industry
Information on the current applications of blockchain in food systems and the potential applicability, uses, and limitations of blockchain for feed ingredients common to the swine industry was gathered from a multitude of sources. The information on applications representative of supply chain logistics for imported feed ingredients was evaluated and limitations of blockchain in tracing lots of packaged ingredients vs. ingredients in bulk transportation was assessed. Overall, blockchain application is a viable technology to ensure traceability of feed ingredients. Blockchain provides key benefits including transaction security, auditability, and transparency. However, these benefits are accompanied by costs including, most importantly, the need for all-in
participation and a value-driven incentive to participate that is shared across the supply chain. In addition, due to the bulk commodity nature of many feed ingredients common to the swine industry, traceability to individual manufacturer or producer through any technology becomes limited to the largest storage and/or transportation unit in the supply chain. Ingredients that move through the supply chain as discreetly packaged products, whether in kilogram packages or metric ton super sacks, have an easier entry into and more optimal traceability within blockchain technology. NIR-II emitting quantum dots for multiplex in vivo imaging and light-sheet imaging
Quantum dots (QDs) emitting at the second near-infrared region (NIR-II; wavelength = 1000–1700 nm) offer unique opportunities as a deep tissue penetrating probe. NIR-II light provides enhanced spatial resolution (~10 μm) through deep tissue due to suppressed photon scattering and near-zero autofluorescence. It affords facile and multiplexed modalities, and QDs can have bright and wavelength-tunable photoluminescence at NIR-II. PbS/CdS (Core/Shell) QDs were sophisticatedly prepared to have sufficient brightness and narrow fluorescence bandwidth to allow multiplexing at NIR-II. A polymer encapsulation technique provided the QDs with long-term fluorescence stability over a week in biological media and offered simple bioconjugations. As a proof-of-concept experiment, two NIR-II QD probes were prepared as two-color multiplexed imaging probes, and a home-built NIR-II imaging setup provided multiplexed and nearly real-time longitudinal whole-body level in vivo imaging. Mixture solution of the two NIR-II QDs was intravenously injected to a tumor-xenografted mouse model and the NIR-II signals from the two channels were longitudinally observed, which empowered simultaneous and direct comparison of the tumor targeting ability for QDs with targeting moiety over the unconjugated control QDs. In addition, three-dimensional images were obtained and analyzed by home-built NIR-II light-sheet imaging setup.1
Going Beyond Counting First Authors in Author Co-citation Analysis
The present study examines one of the fundamental aspects of author co-citation analysis (ACA) - the way co-citation
counts are defined. Co-citation counting provides the data on which all subsequent statistical analyses and mappings
are based, and we compare ACA results based on two different types of co-citation counting - the traditional type that
only counts the first one among a cited work's authors on the one hand and a non-traditional type that takes into
account the first 5 authors of a cited work on the other hand. Results indicate that the picture produced through this non-traditional author co-citation counting contains more coherent author groups and is therefore considerably clearer. However, this picture represents fewer specialties in the research field being studied than that produced through the traditional first-author co-citation counting when the same number of top-ranked authors is selected and analyzed. Variations on the Author
“Variations on the Author” discusses two of Eduardo Coutinho’s recent films (Um Dia na Vida, from 2010, and Últimas Conversas, posthumously released in 2015) and their contribution to the general question of documentary authorship. The director’s filmography is characterized by a consistent yet self-effacing form of authorial self-inscription: Coutinho often features as an interviewer that rather than express opinions propels discourses; an interviewer that is good at listening. This mode of self-inscription characterizes him as an author who is not expressive but who is nonetheless markedly present on the screen. In Um Dia na Vida, however, Coutinho is completely absent form the image, while Últimas Conversas, on the contrary, includes a confessional prologue that moves the director from the margins to the center of his films. This article examines the ways in which these works stand out in the filmography of a director who offers new insights into the notion of cinematic authorship
Appropriate Similarity Measures for Author Cocitation Analysis
We provide a number of new insights into the methodological discussion about author cocitation analysis. We first argue that the use of the Pearson correlation for measuring the similarity between authors’ cocitation profiles is not very satisfactory. We then discuss what kind of similarity measures may be used as an alternative to the Pearson correlation. We consider three similarity measures in particular. One is the well-known cosine. The other two similarity measures have not been used before in the bibliometric literature. Dispelling the Myths Behind First-author Citation Counts
We conducted a full-scale evaluative citation analysis study of scholars in the XML research field to explore just how different from each other author rankings resulting from different citation counting methods actually are, and to demonstrate the capability of emerging data and tools on the Web in supporting more realistic citation counting methods. Our results contest some common arguments for the continued
use of first-author citation counts in the evaluation of scholars, such as high correlations between author rankings by first-author citation counts and other citation
counting methods, and high costs of using more realistic citation counting methods that are not well-supported by the ISI databases. It is argued that increasingly available digital full text research papers make it possible for citation analysis studies to go beyond what the ISI databases have directly supported and to employ more
