Effective communication and public perception play a critical role in the reputation of any institution, and during my time as an organizational communication intern at the Las Vegas Clinic, this premise became especially evident. In this context, the idea arose to create new audiovisual content, specifically videos that highlighted patient experiences, the values of the institution, advances in medical technology and the connection between staff and patients. This strategy, combined with other activities, provided me with deep insight into the community's needs and expectations regarding institutional communication. By sharing these materials on social networks such as Instagram, we witnessed a notable increase in followers and interactions, validating the effectiveness of these audiovisual instruments to promote a positive image of the clinic. However, I also noticed negative comments on platforms such as Google, reflecting an unfavorable perception towards collaborators and lack of knowledge about the services offered. This contrast led me to recognize the need to review and update the existing institutional video. It was from the analysis of the interactions and reach of the videos that the conviction arose that a new institutional video was essential. This new material should not only adequately reflect the technological advances that the Clinic has had, the closeness between staff and patients, and the recognition of collaborators, but also correct the external perception of the clinic and strengthen its identity and reputation. It is with this purpose that I present my preliminary project proposal, which seeks to use updated and authentic audiovisual media to project the essence of the Las Vegas Clinic.1. Learning from Johannesburg Unpacking Denise Scott Brown's South African View of Las Vegas

    No full text
"I have an African's view of Las Vegas," Denise Scott Brown stated boldly in an oral history interview she gave in 1990, thus characterizing her years growing up in Johannesburg, South Africa, as the formative experience that shaped her approach in her studio Learning from Las Vegas and the subsequent eponymous book she coauthored with Robert Venturi and Steven Izenour, her studio collaborators. This influential work has been considered not only the origin of the "research studio" that takes the city as its object of study but also a cornerstone of postmodernism for its effacement of the barriers between high culture and consumer culture. These two components of that work—its turn toward architectural observation of the city and its breaking down of the city into semiotic signs—can, this chapter argues, be traced to Denise Scott Brown's South African formation—a source of influence largely ignored in previous literature. What is at stake in understanding Scott Brown's view of Las Vegas through her experience growing up in Johannesburg in the 1930s through the early 1950s? This chapter considers the evidence of Scott Brown's autobiographical testimony and photographs, with which she constructed the narrative of her career, as an opportunity to relocate her work in the social life and forms of observation characteristic of apartheid-era South Africa

Sex dependence of postoperative pulmonary complications – A post hoc unmatched and matched analysis of LAS VEGAS

STUDY OBJECTIVE: Male sex has inconsistently been associated with the development of postoperative pulmonary complications (PPCs). These studies were different in size, design, population and preoperative risk. We reanalysed the database of 'Local ASsessment of Ventilatory management during General Anaesthesia for Surgery study' (LAS VEGAS) to evaluate differences between females and males with respect to PPCs. DESIGN, SETTING AND PATIENTS: Post hoc unmatched and matched analysis of LAS VEGAS, an international observational study in patients undergoing intraoperative ventilation under general anaesthesia for surgery in 146 hospitals across 29 countries. The primary endpoint was a composite of PPCs in the first 5 postoperative days. Individual PPCs, hospital length of stay and mortality were secondary endpoints. Propensity score matching was used to create a similar cohort regarding type of surgery and epidemiological factors with a known association with development of PPCs. MAIN RESULTS: The unmatched cohort consisted of 9697 patients; 5342 (55.1%) females and 4355 (44.9%) males. The matched cohort consisted of 6154 patients; 3077 (50.0%) females and 3077 (50.0%) males. The incidence in PPCs was neither significant between females and males in the unmatched cohort (10.0 vs 10.7%; odds ratio (OR) 0.93 [0.81-1.06]; P = 0.255), nor in the matched cohort (10.5 vs 10.0%; OR 1.05 [0.89-1.25]; P = 0.556). New invasive ventilation occurred less often in females in the unmatched cohort. Hospital length of stay and mortality were similar between females and males in both cohorts. CONCLUSIONS: In this conveniently-sized worldwide cohort of patients receiving intraoperative ventilation under general anaesthesia for surgery, the PPC incidence was not significantly different between sexes. REGISTRATION: LAS VEGAS was registered at clinicaltrial.gov (study identifier NCT01601223)

Feasibility Study for Mixes of Different Sales Options for Rural Local Food Collaborators

    No full text
Collaborative local food distribution and business enterprise combinations were studied for agriculture producers in remote, low-populated rural communities in Nevada. The research assessed the supply of agricultural products and compared the feasibility of enterprises for local sales and value adding and distribution to Las Vegas. Consumer interests and demand for local food indicated potential demand for a commercial kitchen, café and storefront, a local buying club, Las Vegas product distribution, or a combination of all. The agriculture producers have used the results to plan collaborative distribution into differing enterprise mixes to maximize profits and efficiency, and meet regional consumer demand
