Fears and Language Learning: The Unsolved Knot
Is it conceivable that, in the era of globalization when English is used, abused, and misused in a variety of contexts for countless purposes, students of English as a foreign/second language (EFL/ESL) are afraid of studying/learning it? How is it possible that in our contemporary world students expressly and markedly indicate this to be the case? This phenomenon is what clearly emerges from the P.Æ.C.E. Corpus (Landolfi 2012a) where myriad fears are openly voiced.
The P.Æ.C.E. Corpus was specifically designed to give EFL students to opportunity to express themselves anonymously about their language-related microcosm(s), sets of beliefs, preferences (P), expectations and hopes (Æ), certainties (C), and emotions (E).
While the qualitative analysis of the data (nearly 1,000 texts) has unveiled a variety of fears, the quantitative analysis (more than 100,000 words) has identified the word FEAR(s) as the second most frequently used noun in the English subset of the corpus and PAURA (the Italian equivalent of fear) as the third most frequently used noun in the Italian subset. Both findings have generated, and left unanswered, several issues related to what EFL/ESL instructors can do to overcome this disturbing, though authentic, data-driven insight.
The present paper discloses students’ discomfort issues at university level, identifies fear-activator fields, and discusses possible aspects that signal students’ negative learning attitudes. The study also proposes the use of guided visualizations as working solutions to overcome/minimize fears, motivate learners, and sustain long lasting learning paths
Per exempla: amore elegiaco, matrimonio ed etica della famiglia in Properzio
From exemplary mythical heroines to exemplary matrons of Augustan aristocracy: these are the poles of the transformation process that the female models undergo in propertian elegy, while their didactic-psych- agogic function goes running out and it can be explored another kind of referentiality especially on the book four of the collection.
The κένωσις of a repertoire contrasts with the enrichment of another one, represented by an elegiac wife and a matron. The design of emblematic characters such as Elia Galla and Arethusa corresponds to an ‘experimental engagement’ of a prototype in another one by which results the new type of ‘elegiac bride’, linked to a kind of secluded life, spent in typically female jobs, equipped with a dedication and chas- tity out of time, but agitated by a passionate love, anxieties, fears and jealousies similar to those of elegiac dominae. It is a prototype getting enriched with new shades between 3,12 and 4,3.
Cornelia, a foreign model to elegy, proves certainly the most original character created by the Umbrian poet. Her existence’s a paradigm, her morality is a paradigm, her ancestors are a paradigm, even her offspring will be a paradigm. But in 4,11 the notion of ‘ p a r a d i g m ’ rhymes with two key-terms, i.e. ‘ t r a d i c t i o n ’ and ‘ c o n s e r v a t i o n ’ : that’s the legacy of the last propertian heroine, whose profile forces and refounds the genre in which it is incorporated

An adaptive cascade predictive control strategy for connected and automated vehicles
Connectivity is a key element enabling intelligent vehicles to communicate with each other and the Smart Road. In general, the connectivity is allowed by an On-Board Unit enabling the Vehicle to Everything communication. This paper proposes an innovative unit acting not only as a device allowing connectivity but also as an intelligent electronic control unit to perform advanced and adaptive control strategies able to give reference trajectories and actuator set-points to the low-level control systems of power-train and vehicle dynamics. In particular, based on a cascade model predictive control, an adaptive control strategy is proposed, considering time-varying parameters and information related to vehicle kinematics and dynamics. Such a strategy allows the vehicle to follow a certain origin-destination path in the inertial frame, based on an upper controller that considers a vehicle kinematic model so as to give speed references and target values for the steering angle at the wheels to the inner predictive control loop acting on both longitudinal and lateral vehicle dynamics. To check the effectiveness of the proposed approach, a comparison is made with existing cascade control strategies. The results show better safety and lane-keeping performance. Then, using Hardware-In-the-Loop testing for the proposed Intelligent On-Board Unit, the considered approach demonstrates robustness against parametric variations, signal delay and noise both in the Global Positioning System and in the yaw rate sensor. The achieved results show good robustness properties, safety performances and confirm the real-time execution of the cascade control strategy, paving the way to future developments necessary before tests in a real road scenario
Tommaso Landolfi: Jesenska povest
The issues however typical of 191h-century fantastic narrative which mark Landolfi\u27s Racco nto d\u27autunno are not sufficient reference for fitting his work with the label of this literary genre. As elsewhere, Landolfi\u27s rhetorical and discursive procedures (breech of illusion complicity, contamination of genres) produce a radical twisting of fantastic narrative\u27s defining features at the peak of the genre\u27s uccess in 19th century as determined by the 20th-century post-war critics including Todorov. The structuring ambiguity of an event apparently inexplicable by the logic of the action\u27s setting is shifted by Landolfi from the level of the story to that of the language (i. e. a fantastic event is no longer experienced by the subject as an epistemological challenge), quite in keeping with the author\u27s poetics set on revealing the unreliability of language.
The linkage between binding of the C-terminal domain of hirudin and amidase activity in human alpha-thrombin.
A method derived from the analysis of viscosity effects on the hydrolysis of the amide substrates D-phenylalanylpipecolyl-arginine-p-nitroaniline, tosylglycylprolylarginine-p-nitroanaline and cyclohexylglycylalanylarginine-p-nitroalanine by human alpha-thrombin was developed to dissect the Michaelis-Menten parameters Km and kcat into the individual rate constants of the binding, acylation and deacylation reactions. This method was used to analyse the effect of the C-terminal hirudin (residues 54-65) [hir-(54-65)] domain on the binding and hydrolysis of the three substrates. The results showed that the C-terminal hir-(54-65) fragment affects only the acylation rate, which is increased approx. 1.2-fold for all the substrates. Analysis of the dependence of acylation rate constants on hirudin-fragment concentration, allowed the determination of the equilibrium binding constant of C-terminal hir-(54-65) (Kd approximately 0.7 microM). In addition this peptide was found to competitively inhibit thrombin-fibrinogen interaction with a Ki which is in excellent agreement with the equilibrium constant derived from viscosity experiments. These results demonstrate that binding of hir-(54-65) to the fibrinogen recognition site of thrombin does not affect the equilibrium binding of amide substrates, but induces only a small increase in the acylation rate of the hydrolysis reaction
