Integrating Planning and Learning for Agents Acting in Unknown Environments
An Artificial Intelligence (AI) agent can perceive an environment through sensors and act in the environment through actuators. When performing tasks in a known environment, an agent knows what actions it can execute and how they affect the environment state, but when the environment is unknown, the agent needs to learn how the environment works to make good decisions for accomplishing tasks. In a real-world situation, an agent may have only low-level perceptions of the environment rather than the high-level representations required to make decisions by means of symbolic planning.
This book, Integrating Planning and Learning for Agents Acting in Unknown Environments proposes an architecture that integrates learning, planning, and acting. The author, Leonardo Lamanna, won the 2023 Marco Cadoli award, an annual award from the Italian Association for Artificial Intelligence (AIxIA) for the best doctoral thesis in the field of artificial intelligence, for this work. The approach combines data-driven learning methods for building an environment model with symbolic planning techniques for reasoning on the learned model, focusing on learning the model, either from continuous or symbolic observations. The problem of online learning the mapping between continuous perceptions and symbolic states is tackled, and symbolic planning techniques are exploited to enable an agent to autonomously gather relevant information online, which is required by learning methods to overcome some of the simplifying assumptions of symbolic planning. The effectiveness of the approach in simulated complex environments is shown experimentally and the applicability of the approach in real environments is demonstrated by conducting experiments on a real robot.
Outperforming state-of-the-art methods, the approach described in this book will be of interest to all those working in the field of AI and autonomous agents
Lamanna Eustachio Paolo

Eustachio Paolo Lamanna studied with F. De Sarlo in Florence and was a university professor of moral philosophy in Messina and, for many decades, of the history of philosophy in Florence (he was also the rector of the University of Florence from 1953 to 1961). In his extensive early work Religion in the Life of the Spirit, Lamanna develops a philosophy of religion centered on the autonomy of religious experience and on the necessity of a transcendent referent that guarantees the unity of human knowing and acting. Religion is thus seen as a response to the metaphysical need of consciousness, in a continuous dialogue with philosophy. Among his later works, there is a comprehensive History of Philosophy in many volumes.

Restoring the restoration: The Palaestra of the West Gymnasium of Kos
The contribution derives from a recent investigation held at the DICAR Department of the Polytechnic of Bari, under the scientific supervision of professor Giorgio Rocco, regarding the Palaestra and the Western Gymnasium of Kos. According to the research, the above mentioned Palaestra, one of the largest in the ancient world, is to be dated to the II century B.C. It was partially dug out in 1936 by L. Morricone during the Italian dominance over the Southern Sporades (1912-1948). At that time many restoration works were undertaken in the Italian Dodecanese and also the Palaestra was subjected to an anastylosis which had partially rised its oriental porch. The new search relies on new detailed drawings, complemented with a catalogue of architectural fragments and the analysis of the structures finalized to the reconstructive study. Afterwards the analysis has focused on the critical status of the same Italian restoration, carried on with integration of concrete cement, elaborating a derestoration project and a proposal for an anastylosis of a further section of the porch with the aim to enhancing the archaeological area. Starting from the results of this research, the purpose of our paper is to provide for a contribution to the controversial and highly-discussed topic of the architectural restoration in archaeological sites with a specific focus on the following points of interest: The Italian restoration in Dodecanese: a synthesis (Antonello Fino); The Italian restoration of the Palaestra of the West Gymnasium of Kos: an unfinished yard? (Rossella Martino); Restoring the restoration. A new project for de-restoration and preservation (Daniele Mallardi); A proposal for the accomplishment of the anastylosis and guide lines for the enhancement of the archaeological site (Claudia Lamanna)
