Building a Discourse : production, issues, and reception of Henri Matisse's writings and interviews

Beyond the figure of Henri Matisse [1869-1954] as a painter, a draftsman, an engraver and a sculptor, this study proposes to add and address the role of Matisse as a writer in analyzing how his writings and discourses accompanied the development of his oeuvre, from the beginning of his career in the 1890s until his death. The intensity and the quality of his written and spoken words deserve their own research, and are the focus of this study. Its starting point is the development of a rich corpus composed of the artist’s writings, as well as the creation of a new dossiers, bringing together notes and drafts concerning his major texts. From there, this textual ensemble is contextualized in the artistic and critical environment of his time. By focusing on the contemporary intellectual environment, and the critical reception of Matisse’s writings and statements, this study analyzes the discursive ways through which Matisse constructed and oriented his artistic identity. My research reveals that Matisse reflected deeply on what writing and speaking meant: this reflection encouraged the artist to consider these written and oral statements as integral parts of his creative production, and not as secondary activities. Matisse’s writings and statements allowed him to establish a critical distance from his own creative process, which he used as a springboard to stimulate his artistic production. The study of the construction of Matisse’s discourse brings to light the productive contradictions that underpin the artist’s aesthetics

Art production in France is changed in the interwar years by the globalization of the art market, the vitality of the avant-gardes and the unprecedented diffusion of art periodicals. The art gallery, through the actions of socially and politically committed art dealers, is becoming a major place for the modern art market. Dedicated to the trade of artworks, it acquires a new identity by encouraging socialization and intellectual debates. This context creates new communication means for art galleries: the art gallery magazine. As a promotion tool, the main mission of the periodical is to spread news about exhibitions and artists related to the gallery. Sustained by the ideals of their editors, they offer an open platform, an utopian space of free speech and dialogue, where art theories and contemporary art market analysis, score settling and satirical tracts, literature and poetry meet. Beyond its promotional function, the art gallery magazine, as a sociological object, also establishes links between the various players of a social and cultural group. The main gallery magazines of the 20th Century (Les Arts à Paris, 1918-1935; le Bulletin de la vie artistique, 1919-1926; le Bulletin de la galerie B. Weill, 1923-1935; le Bulletin de l’Effort moderne, 1924-1927) invent lasting editorial references that will last throughout the 20th century. Operating in Paris, art gallery magazines fall within an international cultural context, as demonstrated by the presence of such magazines in the United States (291), Belgium (Le Centaure) or Germany (Der Querschnitt), all developing their own specificities

In the fifties, a national collection of fine arts was born in Lebanon. The action of the Ministry of National Education wich build this collection is highlighted in this study. A museum project able to receive the national collection has never been seriously addressed since, and the circumstances of the war did not help into developing this project. A heavy regional atmosphere has served as a catalyst for collective consciousness, questioning, and the museum’s project has been reappearing on the surface. Questions about the heritage and its future are asked, the Lebanese local scene is rich with cultural actions and large-scale exhibitions. A national museum of fine arts for Lebanon? From foundation to renewal, a subject born in a period of instability in the Middle East, is based on a wealth of unpublished archives, it establishes comparisons and surveys in the educational, academic, cultural and heritage fields. The subject opens several perspectives on the possibilities of creating the museum: What will be its mission and in what context could it succeed

The Société des artistes décorateurs (society of decorative artists) challenged by the institutionalization of the decorative arts in France

This doctoral research focuses on the cultural history of the Société des artistes décorateurs (SAD), a non-profit association recognized as a public utility from 1901 to 2007. The aim is to understand the extent to which the desire for recognition orchestrated by decorative artists was justified and successful. Drawing on a previously unpublished archive held at the Musée des Arts Décoratifs in Paris, we propose to chronologically capture the various stages in the legitimization process, based on a variety of actions, both vertical (the project to create a state-recognized order of decorators) and horizontal (exhibiting at the Grand Palais on the same footing as other artists' societies). At the heart of the process was the Salon, conceived as a unique space for production (prototypes were created after the Second World War), distribution and reception. Through the organization of its Salons, from 1904 to 2007, the history of SAD is nourished by an aesthetic understanding of the object, articulated to the processes from which it emerged (formation, production, promotion and distribution systems). In the second half of the twentieth century, the field of design expanded. It still includes furniture, ceramics and tapestries, but also walkmans, motorcycles and industrial design. We propose to understand the legitimizing processes of these artistic and utilitarian expressions. However, a figure is emerging and asserting itself, that of the interior architect, whose various aspects we will identify, notably on the basis of a historical semantic analysis. The title of this study, "Putting the institutionalization of the decorative arts in France to the test", clarifies the problem. Institutionalization refers to the process by which the decorative arts are recognized by public authorities and integrated into cultural and social institutions. We will show the processes of institutionalization between entrepreneurial, governmental and corporatist bodies (associations, unions), dialectically articulated with the figure of the individual creator. The aim of our research is also to understand the role of SAD in the historiography of twentieth-century French decorative arts

From Japonisme to Asiatisme : semi-luxury earthenware for all (France, 1861-1939)

The economic growth of manufacturing earthenware and porcelain in the province triggered a flourishing industrial standard in the decorative arts. The Beautiful and Industry are the two new values inseparable, celebrated by the production of French ceramics until the end of the first half of the twentieth century. Manufacturers want to provide quality products at lower costs to all classes. Improvements in ceramic materials and technical casting, as well as lowering the cost of decorative techniques, have encouraged the opening up the hierarchy of decorative arts. These new technical processes took part in the improvement of living conditions of the bourgeoisie and smaller classes. Japanese style productions were large-scale diffused in bourgeois interiors since 1860’s. These works fall into a broader context: the large-scale pottery production, implemented by factories in Paris and the provinces throughout the period, including during the interwar period. Industrialization brings to market products that must seek the attention of all classes. These inexpensive items had to correspond to aesthetic and practical heterogeneous criterion. By focusing on the same style as collective motion, such as shape and decoration, the different environments provided producers a direction to follow in models making. Business strategy of manufacturing has been designed accordingly. The ceramics “curio”, easy to handle, illustrates the representations of an imagined and apprehended country in a collective way thanks to exhibitions, movies, plays and literature. These representations contribute to the emergence of an urban popular culture whose commercial character is clearly assumed. This ceramics is part of the universe of “kitsch” as mass communications used by the middle class

Presence and uses of pre-Columbian arts in decorative arts in France, from 1875 to 1945

This doctoral dissertation deals with the presence and uses of pre-Columbian arts in decorative arts in France. The research starts in 1875 with the first Congress of Americanists; it ends in 1945, and it ends in 1945 with the conclusion of the Second World War and the death of one of the principal artists of the corpus, Jean Puiforcat. Overall, it seeks to contribute to the history of cultural transfers between Mexico, Peru and France. It begins by focussing on the links between the diplomatic forces at play and the cultural development of Americanism. From there, it concentrates on the evolution of the French perception of pre-Columbian arts through an analysis of temporary exhibitions, the art market and art reviews in France. This analysis makes it possible to understand how the reevaluation of these American civilisations supported the appropriation of pre-Columbian motives in decorative creation in France: many decorators were interested in the formal possibilities of these productions and used them according to heterogeneous but concomitant methods. Such phenomena are multilateral: the analysis of the collections of pre-Columbian ornaments and their dramatizing by governments made it possible to clarify international collaborations, in particular that of the Peruvian artist Elena Izcue with the designer Elsa Schiaparelli. This thesis is presented as a study of history of representations centred on the diffusion and the instrumentalization of pre-Columbian arts in Mexico, Peru and France, in order to understand their visual and cultural productivity in the field of decorative arts in France

Heritage awareness and architectural creation in Iran : about André Godard (1881-1965)

Situated at the crossroads of several trade routes, empires and continents, the Iranian territory and its various populations have undergone numerous conquests and dominations throughout their history. As a result, the art formed in this territory presents a multitude of identities that together comprise notions of continuity and unity in the definition of its heritage. However, the Qajars and then the Pahlavis brought all these influences together to create a single identity that is evident in the art of each period, and particularly in the architecture. The birth of archaeology was not without consequences in terms of heritage resonance, since it raised awareness of Iran's ancient monuments, and contributed to the very definition of antiquities, while also enabling the development of new monumental programs. France played an important role in this heritage awareness through André Godard (1881-1965), a French Beaux-Arts architect whom the Iranian government placed at the head of its Archaeological Service between 1928 and 1960. Godard, who had specialized in Islamic architecture and knew neither Iran nor Iranians well at the time of his arrival, discovered a fascinating world and culture. With his wife and main collaborator, Yedda Godard (1889-1976), he led a double life in this country, that of an Orientalist architect and that of an administrator. Access to the couple's archives, most of which are held by the Musée du Louvre, provides a starting point for an in-depth study of the process of heritage preservation in Iran. This archival material, made up of photographs, scientific and administrative documents, is packed with new anecdotes and information on the modernization of Iran, in the fields of archaeology, architecture and fine arts
