Fairness in agreement with European values: An interdisciplinary perspective on ai regulation

    No full text
With increasing digitalization, Artificial Intelligence (AI) is becoming ubiquitous. AI-based systems to identify, optimize, automate, and scale solutions to complex economic and societal problems are being proposed and implemented. This has motivated regulation efforts, including the Proposal of an EU AI Act. This interdisciplinary position paper considers various concerns surrounding fairness and discrimination in AI, and discusses how AI regulations address them, focusing on (but not limited to) the Proposal. We first look at AI and fairness through the lenses of law, (AI) industry, sociotechnology, and (moral) philosophy, and present various perspectives. Then, we map these perspectives along three axes of interests: (i) Standardization vs. Localization, (ii) Utilitarianism vs. Egalitarianism, and (iii) Consequential vs. Deontological ethics which leads us to identify a pattern of common arguments and tensions between these axes. Positioning the discussion within the axes of interest and with a focus on reconciling the key tensions, we identify and propose the roles AI Regulation should take to make the endeavor of the AI Act a success in terms of AI fairness concerns. Are there synergies between World Bank partial credit guarantees and private lending?

    No full text
Since 1994, the World Bank has provided partial credit guarantees to private financiers of several large infrastructure projects in developing countries. A major objective of the partial guarantee program is to leverage Bank resources so as to provide developing countries with better private credit terms. A real test of the efficacy of World Bank partial credit guarantees is whether they also lower the interest rate and lengthen the effective maturity of the part of the credit not covered by the World Bank guarantee. On the basis of deals closed so far, the author finds no evidence that guarantees have affected nonguaranteed interest rates favorably, while the duration of the nonguaranteed credits remains relatively short.International Terrorism&Counterterrorism,Payment Systems&Infrastructure,Banks&Banking Reform,Economic Theory&Research,Strategic Debt Management,Financial Crisis Management&Restructuring,Banks&Banking Reform,Economic Theory&Research,Strategic Debt Management,Insurance&Risk Mitigation

Enhancing Public Charging Network CPOs' Business Models Through Vehicle-to-Grid Integration in the Netherlands

    No full text
This thesis explores the transformation of the global transportation and energy sectors through the adoption of electric vehicles (EVs). EVs have emerged as a crucial solution to reduce greenhouse gas emissions and promote sustainable energy sources. The associated charging infrastructure poses challenges and opportunities for Charge Point Operators (CPOs).Among the various charging solutions, Vehicle-to-Grid (V2G) technology offers significant potential for CPOs. However, prior research has not comprehensively addressed the financial implications, operational costs, and revenue streams specific to CPOs, particularly within the energy market. The primary objective is to investigate public charging network business models through V2G integration in the Netherlands from a CPO perspective. The central research question is whether CPOs in the Netherlands can enhance their business model through V2G in the EPEX DAM market. The primary focus is on assessing the financial impact of V2G on CPO operations, considering factors such as electricity procurement costs, user behavior, and location-specific dynamics. The methodology combines empirical analysis, simulation modeling, and data-driven insights. It commences with a literature review on EV charging, V2G technology, and CPO business models. Stakeholder consultations provide real-world insights into business dynamics and cost structures. An Excel-based simulation model replicates various V2G charging scenarios using data from the European Power Exchange (EPEX) Spot Day-Ahead Market (DAM). A base case charging scenario, involving both V2G and regular charging, is developed, and the results are used to assess CPO profitability in the Public Charging Network business case.An extended Cost-Benefit Excel model evaluates the profitability of the CPO's business model after integrating the reduced variable cost of procured electricity through V2G within the evolving EPEX DAM landscape. It considers factors such as battery degradation, customer compensation, charging behavior, and market dynamics. The simulation models reveal pivotal findings. V2G integration strategically implemented has the potential to boost CPO profitability by significantly reducing electricity procurement costs. User compensation schemes, charging patterns, usage rates, and location-specific demand dynamics significantly influence earnings. Sensitivity analysis underscores the importance of usage rates, cost reduction for procured electricity, and network expansion in driving profitability. In conclusion, this thesis uncovers the potential of V2G technology to enhance EV charging infrastructure while contributing to grid stability and renewable energy integration. The findings provide strategic guidance for CPOs to focus on densely populated cities to maximize revenue and profits. The insights extend beyond CPOs and are relevant to stakeholders within the EV charging ecosystem.Electrical Engineering | Sustainable Energy Technolog

Ludwik Osiński – profesor-esteta. Próba waloryzacji wykładów literatury porównawczej

Ludwik Osiński – professor-aesthete. An attempt to valorize the comparative literature lectures The article is an attempt to give a broad outline of the profile of Ludwik Osiński as a literature lecturer at the Warsaw University. Over the centuries, the author of Zbiór zabawek wierszem has been accused of: lack of originality in concluding, imitativeness, deficiency of qualifications characteristic for a university lecturer, and finally, disapproval for transformations taking place in literature. The purpose of the article is to answer the question about the Osiński’s position among the scientists of the Congress Kingdom. Moreover, this paper is also an attempt to verify the slightly understated, still taken over and reproduced judgements about unilateral and definitely negative attitude of scientists towards the critical legacy of the author of Zbiór zabawek wierszem. When assessing the aesthetic and literary achievements of Ludwik Osiński, two points of reference were determined; the first one is the heritage of Antique, and the other one – the European literary doctrines developing in the 2nd half of 18th and the beginning of 19th century. In the exemplification, the author of the article subjects a fragment of the Osiński’s course (Wykład literatury porównawczej, czytanej w Uniwersytecie Warszawskim, [The lecture of comparative literature, read at the Warsaw University]) devoted to lyrical poetry to research review. A detailed presentation concerns a few issues, mainly the attitude to the antique tradition and the European literary doctrines, as well as understanding of the rules of evaluating and valuing of literary works

Women in the life and work of Alojzy Feliński

    No full text
The authors of papers dedicated to Alojzy Feliński, while reaching for his works, analyzed above all his Barbara Radziwiłłówna or Hymn na rocznicę ogłoszenia Królestwa Polskiego… Unfortunately, there are no broader discussions of Feliński’s relationships with women within research interests, despite the fact that many episodes addressed to them can be found in the playwright’s work. In the exemplification, the author of the article examines fragments of letters, diaries and poems relating to women who played a special role in the playwright’s life. The purpose of the thesis is not to reveal completely unknown works or events from Feliński’s biography to the reader. The research point of view is primarily an attempt to gather in one publication the works of the Radamist i Zenobia’s author dealing with the women whom the artist met in his life and to whom he did not remain indifferent. These included, among others: Zofia Załęska, Józefa Omiecińska, Emilia and Tekla from the Feliński family and Helena Felińska. The topic seems interesting and definitely deserves wider recognition, because it will present the representative of postanisławowski classicism in a broader and more comprehensive light, yet far from inducing any sensation.Publikacja dofinansowana ze środków Wydziału Filologicznego Uniwersytetu Łódzkieg

Portret Alojzego Felińskiego. Zapomniana sylwetka-wspomnienie w „Gazecie Lwowskiej”

    No full text
This article is an attempt to reminisce the commemorative profile drawn up by Wiktor Hahn, a professor at the Lviv University, and a literary scholar. It was published in three parts on February 23–25, 1920 in “Gazeta Lwowska”. The interpretation conducted is aimed first and foremost at presenting a somewhat less typical portrait of Alojzy Feliński. Before, the writers of anniversary works focused on discussing only the most outstanding works of the Volynian dramatist, completely ignoring his early attempts at drama – early adult works, often with a sensational plot, stimulating the imagination of the young artist. The author of this article attempts to show that the said portrait on the one hand is of an informative nature (the family home of the poet is recalled, his education and youthful contacts with contemporary writers are pointed out), but also is not devoid of valorizing elements, since next to a notification about the poet’s life and work is included an evaluation of Feliński’s works, a professional historical-literary commentary, which is combined with a colorful, sometimes quite common, way of putting the content of the discussed works across. Ultimately, the result is a portrait of a creative person
