Gamma-emitters 90Sr, 238,239+240Pu and 241Am in bones and liver of eagles from Poland

    No full text
The present study focused on analyzing samples of bones, livers and kidneys of European white-tailed eagles (Haliaëtus albicilla) and lesser-spotted eagle (Aquila pomarina). Bone samples were collected for both species, from 7 and 2 individuals, respectively, whereas liver and kidney samples for white-tailed eagle species only, 2 and 1 individuals, respectively. The samples were analyzed for the presence of gamma-emitters and then for 90Sr, 238Pu, 239+240Pu and 241Am. The applied radiochemical method is presented. Activity concentration in ashen bones (600 °C) for 90Sr ranged from 4.6±1.2 to 31.0±2.5 Bq/kg, for 239+240Pu from <1.7 to 21±4 mBq/kg, for 238Pu from <2.7 to 6.5±1.3 mBq/kg and for 241Am from <1.2 to 6.5±4.4 mBq/kg. Relatively high 239+240Pu activity concentration of 78±9 mBq/kg (for fresh weight) was recorded in a single kidney sample. The liver samples showed activities of magnitude at least one order lower. No clear correlations were found between the activities of different radionuclides

The allegation of witchcraft as an insult in the judical practice in a smaller town of the Royal Prussia in the second half of 17th and 18th centuries

The Chełmno law (ius culmense) and other legal systems in force protected good reputation. It was reflected for example in the fact of penalizing any kinds of verbal insults and slanders (calumny) which were not supported by appropriate evidence; they were treated as an insult to the legal interest of a human being. It also concerned false allegations of witchcraftt. The subject matter of the article is the practice of adjudicating cases concerning slander (calumny) and including the allegation of witchcraft in smaller towns of the Royal Prussia (the second half of the 17th–18th centuries). On the basis of the judicial files of the town of Nowe nad Wisłą, the author presented the background of false allegations, the model of conduct of the judicial bodies and the catalogue of punishments used by the courts. It constitutes a contribution to a more extensive discussion about trials concerning witchcraft in the Prussian province and other parts of the Polish Kingdom in the early modern period

Communication System Between the ROV and the USV’s “Edredon” Control Post

    No full text
One of the tasks carried out by the operator from the Command Post (land or ship), who controls the unmanned surface vehicle (USV „Edredon”) is the protection of critical marine objects (ports, ships, container terminals, etc.). This task is often carried out by using a remote operated vehicle type ROV (unmanned underwater vehicle). This vehicle is transported on board the USV at the site of the planned underwater reconnaissance area. When USV reach the scheduled location, the USV operator switches to remote control of the ROV vehicle. The article discusses solving the problem of remote control of the underwater vehicle ROV from Command Post. The operator uses the Launch and Recovery (L&R) system on the USV to control the ROV ditching process from the USV deck. It then controls the movement of the ROV vehicle under water (images from cameras and data from sensors placed on the vehicle ROV are transmitted via USV to the Command Post). After completing the task, the ROV vehicle is lifted aboard the USV, which carries out the next task

Mathematical approach to the performance evaluation of matrix multiply algorithm

    No full text
Matrix multiplication (MM) is a computationally-intensive operation in many algorithms used in scientific computations. Not only one of the kernels in numerical linear algebra, the problem of matrix multiplication is also fundamental for almost all matrix problems such as least square and eigenvalues problem. The performance analysis of the MM needs to be re-evaluated to find out the best-practice algorithm on novel architectures. This motivated the analysis which is presented in this article and which is carried out by means of the new modelling framework that the authors have already introduced (L. D’Amore et al. On a Mathematical Approach for Analyzing Parallel Algorithms, 2015). The model exploits the knowledge of the algorithm and the multilevel parallelism of the target architecture and it could help the researchers for designing optimized MM implementations

Settlement and mediation in Royal Prussian law. On the example of the court practice of the town Nowe nad Wisłą [New on the Vistula] in the eighteenth century

    No full text
The mediation and its resulting settlement were widely used in medieval and early-modern court practice. They were used in civil and criminal cases, where the dispute could be overcome by the parties coming to an agreement. The aim of this article is to analyze the normative agreement (legal basis) used in the Royal Prussian area and the solution of local judicial practice (the way of implementing norms in daily legal practice) based on the prevailing law of the Chełm region (ius culmense). Based on the sources of law and materials of the town Nowe nad Wisłą [New on the Vistula], the author presents the reconciliation operation in small, 18th-century, Prussian town. </jats:p

Manumission as a legal action in the judicial practice of Royal Prussia in the second half of the 17th and 18th c.

Manumission (manumissio, liberation, emancipation) was essential for the existing rights and obligations of a serf and his former master. It is interesting to analyse the formal side of this legal action and its content in terms of legal and actual consequences. The more so as awarding personal freedom was not at all uncommon in Prussia, and the literature on this subject usually refers to social consequences only. Based on the rich source material, the author discusses the manumission as a legal action in the practice of Prussia in the latter half of 17th and in the 18th centuries, focusing on its role, form, and the ways for insuring the new status of the former subject. XVII i w XVIII w. Skupia się na roli libertacji, jej formularzu oraz sposobach zabezpieczenia nowej sytuacji faktycznej byłego poddanego
