Remarkable historic timber roofs. Knowledge and conservation practicePart 1 - Construction history and survey of historic timber roofs
This special issue has the ambitious goal of helping
to outline the current international panorama of research
on historic timber roof structures, especially those with
DOI: 10.30682/tema08SIm
great span or peculiar technical relevance. The collection
of papers is divided into two volumes: the first is focused
on the history of timber roof construction, and the second
is on the investigation, analysis, and intervention for roof
preservation.
This introductory contribution is written to comment
on construction history. The studies are developed by researchers from different countries and disciplines. Some
declare in their career to work in the field of Construction
History; others belong to other sectors such as Historic Building Conservation, Building Survey, or Historic
Building Structures. As it is well known, in the Italian
academic context, the distinction between sectors in
the field of civil engineering and architecture (ICAR) is
relevant, and it favors the isolation of research and discourages the integration of different working methods.
As mentioned on the website of the Construction History
Society, “Construction history is not blind to the importance of conservation and repair work, but it is focused
on establishing and studying the history of building construction and not on how buildings should be repaired”.
In any case, understanding construction history is vital
for all those involved in the maintenance and repair of
historic structures. Therefore, the first aim of this collection is to fill the gap among different methodologies and

Analisi del ciclo di vita di un edificio residenziale in balle di paglia e confronto con tecnologie convenzionali
The work aims to assess the environmental impact of buildings with alternative ecological materials in comparison to conventional buildings. The study uses the case study of a single-family house located in the province of Bologna, built with a wooden supporting frame and straw insulation. To this end, an LCA survey was conducted to compare the technical solutions adopted with alternatives that use a reinforced concrete frame with brick infill and rock wool or EPS insulation and, finally, with infill and horizontal elements in autoclaved aerated concrete. The results of this study, dealt with using the One Click LCA software with the related databases and the European standard UNI EN 15978, indicate, in addition to an excellent energy behavior in the use phase of the built building, also a lower environmental impact, linked to almost all impact categories, compared to the alternatives. To evaluate the thermo-hygrometric behavior of the building and the correspondence between the energy performance data provided by the designers and the built reality, on-site analyzes were conducted
Going Beyond Counting First Authors in Author Co-citation Analysis
The present study examines one of the fundamental aspects of author co-citation analysis (ACA) - the way co-citation
counts are defined. Co-citation counting provides the data on which all subsequent statistical analyses and mappings
are based, and we compare ACA results based on two different types of co-citation counting - the traditional type that
only counts the first one among a cited work's authors on the one hand and a non-traditional type that takes into
account the first 5 authors of a cited work on the other hand. Results indicate that the picture produced through this non-traditional author co-citation counting contains more coherent author groups and is therefore considerably clearer. However, this picture represents fewer specialties in the research field being studied than that produced through the traditional first-author co-citation counting when the same number of top-ranked authors is selected and analyzed. Reasons for these effects are discussed
Variations on the Author
“Variations on the Author” discusses two of Eduardo Coutinho’s recent films (Um Dia na Vida, from 2010, and Últimas Conversas, posthumously released in 2015) and their contribution to the general question of documentary authorship. The director’s filmography is characterized by a consistent yet self-effacing form of authorial self-inscription: Coutinho often features as an interviewer that rather than express opinions propels discourses; an interviewer that is good at listening. This mode of self-inscription characterizes him as an author who is not expressive but who is nonetheless markedly present on the screen. In Um Dia na Vida, however, Coutinho is completely absent form the image, while Últimas Conversas, on the contrary, includes a confessional prologue that moves the director from the margins to the center of his films. This article examines the ways in which these works stand out in the filmography of a director who offers new insights into the notion of cinematic authorship
Appropriate Similarity Measures for Author Cocitation Analysis
We provide a number of new insights into the methodological discussion about author cocitation analysis. We first argue that the use of the Pearson correlation for measuring the similarity between authors’ cocitation profiles is not very satisfactory. We then discuss what kind of similarity measures may be used as an alternative to the Pearson correlation. We consider three similarity measures in particular. One is the well-known cosine. The other two similarity measures have not been used before in the bibliometric literature. Supporto all’analisi costruttiva per gli edifici storici: applicazioni del reverse engineering al rilievo del patrimonio costruito. Construction analysis support for historical buildings: applications of reverse engineering to Cultural Heritage survey
Reverse engineering is a process in which an existing object is studied to understand how it
works and potentially improve it. In the field of Cultural Heritage, 3D scanning and parametric
modeling tools have made it possible to use the typical reverse engineering approach to study
and understand historic buildings. This paper presents a method for studying the displacements
and deformations that have occurred in historic masonry buildings over time using Terrestrial
Laser Scanning (TLS) and parametric modeling. The proposed workflow is divided into three
stages: digital survey, computational 3D modeling, and comparison of the deformed and undeformed
configurations. The digital survey creates a 3D point cloud, referred to as the “Basic 3D
Model” (B3M), which accurately represents the current condition of the building’s structural
elements. The point cloud is then reconstructed as a 3D NURBS topological model, and specific
visual programming algorithms are used to restore the hypothetical deformations that have occurred
over time to their original state. This model is called the “Ideal 3D Model” (I3M) because
it represents the theoretical, undeformed configuration of the structures. By comparing the I3M
and the B3M, the structural behavior of parts of the building can be determined, and the overall
condition of the building can be evaluated to guide improvement interventions. The method has
been applied to several case studies in Italy, including the masonry columns and the masonry
facades of the Basilica of San Domenico in Siena and the timber trusses of the Teatro Comunale
in Bologna, Italy
Dispelling the Myths Behind First-author Citation Counts
We conducted a full-scale evaluative citation analysis study of scholars in the XML research field to explore just how different from each other author rankings resulting from different citation counting methods actually are, and to demonstrate the capability of emerging data and tools on the Web in supporting more realistic citation counting methods. Our results contest some common arguments for the continued
use of first-author citation counts in the evaluation of scholars, such as high correlations between author rankings by first-author citation counts and other citation
counting methods, and high costs of using more realistic citation counting methods that are not well-supported by the ISI databases. It is argued that increasingly available digital full text research papers make it possible for citation analysis studies to go beyond what the ISI databases have directly supported and to employ more
sophisticated methods
