Persino quando descrive la sua Repubblica utopica, modello per una improbabile riforma burocratica, l’autore unisce etnologia ed enciclopedia del possibile.«Misteri dei Ministeri» by Augusto Frassineti, the work that condenses the literary and working experiences of a lifetime, has a marked encyclopedic imprint. Not only the absurdity of the administrative microcosm represents the contradictions of the human macrocosm, but also from a formal point of view the pressing lists and classifications, seasoned with a satirical vein, demonstrate the analytical nature of the Frassineti summa. Even when describing his utopian Republic, a model for an improbable bureaucratic reform, the author combines ethnology and encyclopedia of the possible

«Una riforma vera della burocrazia» sarebbe attuabile solo spostando l’attività amministrativa all’aperto, come accade nell’utopica Repubblica delineata dall’autore, dove vige una forma di «socialcongedismo».In his "Misteri dei ministeri", Augusto Frassineti (Faenza, 1911 - Rome, 1985) exploits the pastiche technique and the provocative lash to represent the universe of bureaucracy. The author, who had direct experience of administrative obtuseness when in the post-war period is appointed director of the Veterans Service by Minister Lussu, inventories files, objects, human portraits, exploring the mechanisms with which power is self-legitimate. It is the "mysterious force" of Ministerialism that provokes forms of pathological alienation, not far from the effects of totalitarian systems. With an ironic look and an atmosphere suspended between Fantozzi and Kafka, Frassineti creates a real bureaucratic encyclopedia. He describes the contradictions of reality beyond the walls of ministerial buildings

Speaking with mask in the COVID-19 era: Multiclass machine learning classification of acoustic and perceptual parameters

    No full text
The intensive use of personal protective equipment often requires increasing voice intensity, with possible development of voice disorders. This paper exploits machine learning approaches to investigate the impact of different types of masks on sustained vowels /a/, /i/, and /u/ and the sequence /a'jw/ inside a standardized sentence. Both objective acoustical parameters and subjective ratings were used for statistical analysis, multiple comparisons, and in multivariate machine learning classification experiments. Significant differences were found between mask+shield configuration and no-mask and between mask and mask+shield conditions. Power spectral density decreases with statistical significance above 1.5 kHz when wearing masks. Subjective ratings confirmed increasing discomfort from no-mask condition to protective masks and shield. Machine learning techniques proved that masks alter voice production: in a multiclass experiment, random forest (RF) models were able to distinguish amongst seven masks conditions with up to 94% validation accuracy, separating masked from unmasked conditions with up to 100% validation accuracy and detecting the shield presence with up to 86% validation accuracy. Moreover, an RF classifier allowed distinguishing male from female subject in masked conditions with 100% validation accuracy. Combining acoustic and perceptual analysis represents a robust approach to characterize masks configurations and quantify the corresponding level of discomfort

In vivo P-31-MRS assessment of cytosolic [Mg2+] in the human skeletal muscle in different metabolic conditions

Cytosolic free [Mg2+] can be assessed in vivo by P-31-MRS from the chemical shift of beta-ATP. The reliability of in vivo measurements depends on the availability of appropriate in vitro calibration curves obtained by using solutions that mimic the in vivo cytosolic conditions as far as possible, We build a semi-empiric equation that correlates the chemical shift of beta-ATP to free [Mg2+] taking into account the amount of Mg2+ bound to all other ligands in solution. Our experiments resulted in a reliable ten-parameters equation directly usable to assess the cytosolic free [Mg2+] of human skeletal muscle at rest, during work and recovery. Our experiments also resulted in a new equation that allows the assessment of cytosolic pH from the chemical shift of Pi laking into account the measured free [Mg2+]. To perform simultaneous calculation of free [Mg2+] and pH in the skeletal muscle in different metabolic conditions we developed a specific software package available on Internet (http://www.unibo.it/bioclin) together with another program based on the equation previously obtained to calculate cytosolic free [Mg2+] in the human brain. The reliability and effectiveness of our equations and software were tested on the calf muscles of healthy volunteers at rest, during work and recovery. (C) 2000 Elsevier Science Inc. Urtica dioica L. (stinging nettle) is a neglected underutilized species, with potential as a future multi-purpose crop. To address the requisite for information on the influence of agronomical factors on health promoting bioactive components in leaf material under organic management, commercial stinging nettle was cultivated in three locations (Emilia Romagna, Italy) and analyzed over four harvests (September 2020 September 2021). Significantly higher levels of polyphenol and flavonoid components as well as antioxidant activity (ferric reducing antioxidant potential [FRAP] and 1,1-diphenyl-2-picrylhydrazyl [DPPH]) were obtainable in May and July in the second cultivation year. Only the location at Lizzano yielded significantly higher biomass in combination with higher polyphenol content and FRAP in May, DPPH in May and July and ascorbate in July and September. Throughout 2021, limiting water supply was the major determinant for the significantly lower yield and higher polyphenol (flavonoid) content, respectively, at the rainfed location of Tresigallo. Temperature and growing degree days were inversely correlated to polyphenol content and antioxidant activity, implicating temperature as the major determinant of the latter under non-limiting water supply in the mountainous region of Lizzano. Provided agronomic practices are implemented, including effective weed removal, uniform water supply (supplementary irrigation) and organic amendments, satisfactory yields are obtainable combined with high levels of bioactive components. This shows promise for stinging nettle cultivation towards increased use in the medicinal/herbalist sector

Assessing the experience of dyspareunia in the endometriosis population: the Subjective Impact of Dyspareunia Inventory (SIDI)

STUDY QUESTION Is the Subjective Impact of Dyspareunia Inventory (SIDI) a reliable tool to examine the experience of dyspareunia in the context of endometriosis? SUMMARY ANSWER In this study, the SIDI showed good structural and psychometric properties, and thus can be used as a reliable questionnaire to assess the impact of endometriosis-related dyspareunia on multiple dimensions, such as sexuality and intimate relationships. WHAT IS KNOWN ALREADY In the endometriosis population, dyspareunia has a tremendous negative impact on psychological health, overall sexual function and couple relationships. However, there is a paucity of tools that can be effectively used in either research or clinical practice to assess the subjective components of the dyspareunia experience, including coping strategies to deal with the pain. STUDY DESIGN, SIZE, DURATION In this cross-sectional study, the validity of the SIDI was examined by considering the responses provided by 638 participants with endometriosis and dyspareunia, who participated in an online survey conducted between 8 November and 21 December 2021. Participants were recruited using snowball sampling that involved posting the invitation to participate in the study on the social media of a patient association. PARTICIPANTS/MATERIALS, SETTING, METHODS Participants were women aged >= 18 with clinical or surgical diagnosis of endometriosis. The SIDI measures the subjective impact of dyspareunia and is composed of 16 items focused on the frequency of dyspareunia-related experiences in the last 6 months, rated on a 5-point Likert scale. Sexuality was assessed using the Female Sexual Function Index. Psychological health was measured using the Hospital Anxiety and Depression Scale and the Rosenberg Self-Esteem Scale. Sociodemographic and endometriosis-related information was collected using a researcher-made questionnaire. Statistical significance was set at P < 0.05. MAIN RESULTS AND THE ROLE OF CHANCE Factor analysis revealed that the SIDI has a four-factor structure and allows for examining the impact of dyspareunia in terms of Sexual Concerns (Factor 1), Relationship Concerns (Factor 2), Partner Support (Factor 3) and Endurance of Pain (Factor 4). The SIDI showed good structural and psychometric properties (including internal consistency), was associated with sexual function and psychological health and was able to discriminate between participants with and without sexual dysfunction. LIMITATIONS, REASONS FOR CAUTION Reasons for caution are related to the risk of self-selection bias depending on the study population and recruitment strategy. Moreover, all the information provided by the participants was self-reported, which may have affected the accuracy of the data collected, especially with regards to endometriosis-specific information. WIDER IMPLICATIONS OF THE FINDINGS This study may provide a new brief tool that can be used by clinicians and researchers to assess the impact of dyspareunia from a multidimensional perspective and to consider subjective aspects that can be usefully integrated with information about pain severity, timing and localization.
