Type of housing affects social and feeding behaviour of captive buzzards (_Buteo buteo_)

    No full text
The animals used in this study were observed in captivity for along time during recovery from injuries before their release. Their social behaviour was studied under two housing conditions: one group (20 animals) was kept in a 9x9x4 m pen on the ground floor together with 10 individuals of different species but of similar size; another group (40 animals) was kept in a pen of equal size to the first, on the upper floor, with a lower level of disturbance by stockpersons. The intra- and interspecific interactions were recorded continuously in both groups

Ag X-ray fluorescence on different thickness and concentration layers

    No full text
This work derives from the requirement to investigate on the silver surface enrichment of objects of historical and artistic interest using the X-ray fluorescence non-destructive technique (XRF). The aim is the thickness estimation through the experimental relationship between K-alpha/K-beta and K-alpha/L-alpha of Ag as a function of the thickness. Measurements on silver sheets of different thicknesses and three concentrations are carried out using a XRF spectrometer with a maximum voltage of 50 kV. The results allow to analyse the plating layer of silver objects also to make other interesting considerations

Effect of interferon alpha, interferon gamma and tumor necrosis factor on the procoagulant activity of human cancer cells

    No full text
BACKGROUND: It is not known whether the different cytokines may influence the procoagulant activity of cancer cells; the purpose of this study was to investigate the effect of interferon alpha, interferon gamma and tumor necrosis factor on the procoagulation capacity of human cancer cells cultured "in vitro" or isolated from tumor tissues. METHODS: "In vitro" cultured tumor cell lines were derived from a patient with malignant mesothelioma and a patient with lung adenocarcinoma. Cells isolated from 6 carcinomas of different origin were also investigated. The procoagulant activity of the cells before and after treatment with the cytokines was expressed as RBT U/10(5) cells or RVV U/10(5) cells. RESULTS: Short-term incubation of tumor cells cultured "in vitro" with cytokines did not modify their procoagulant activity; after longer incubation however, interferon alpha induced a significant increase in the procoagulant activity of mesothelioma cells, while interferon gamma induced and increase in the procoagulant activity of lung adenocarcinoma cells. Furthermore, short-term incubation of cells isolated from tumor tissues with interferon gamma or tumor necrosis factor resulted in a significant increase of procoagulant activity, while interferon alpha had no effect. CONCLUSIONS: Altogether, these data demonstrate that the cytokines may influence the expression of the different procoagulant activities of tumor cells

Elemental analysis using ED-XRF and 14C dating of Cuman wall paintings samples

The aim of the present research was to analyse pigments and mortars of fresco fragments located at Cuma (Naples, Italy). The ED-XRF technique and 14C dating were used to establish the nature of the pigments and the age of mortars, respectively. ED-XRF results allowed to determine the elemental composition of the pigments that identified the colours and, hence, the historical period of completion. The 14C dating, applied to mortars using a particular preparation, provided results that are in accordance with the archaeological information within the 2σ interval range
