Intra and Inter organisational determinants of electronic-based traceability adoption: evidences from the French agri-food industry

    No full text
Traceability, the ability to trace the origin of products throughout the supply chain, has become an instrument to assure food quality and safety in agri-food chains. This process is organized within both institutional and market constraints, yet it integrates also a technological sphere marked by the unprecedented development of information and communication technologies. This paper analyses the factors influencing firms’ behaviour, with regards to adopting electronic-based traceability, in the French agri-food industry. These factors (microeconomic determinants) related to firms’ internal characteristics and the factors related to their environment. We use data from the ICT and Electronic Commerce survey from 2002, carried out by the French National Institute of Statistics (INSEE). A Probit type model is used, which allow us to take into account the firm’s determinants for its organisational choice, differentiating from those adopting (or not) an electronic-based traceability tool. Our main results show that the choices of electronic-based traceability depend on and interact with their own organizational characteristics and those of their competitive, industrial and local environment. Traceability technologies evidence the complementarities between organisational and technological practices. Large industrial firms known for their established identity and a brand image seem distant from standard traceability practices, contrarily to agribusinesses, which are subjected to regulations and look forward to use traceability for both complying with their downstream contracts and add value to their regional specificities.Traceability, Technology adoption, Agri-food industry, Agribusiness, Food Consumption/Nutrition/Food Safety,

The generation of live offspring from vitrified oocytes

    No full text
Oocyte cryopreservation is extremely beneficial for assisted reproductive technologies, the treatment of infertility and biotechnology and offers a viable alternative to embryo freezing and ovarian grafting approaches for the generation of embryonic stem cells and live offspring. It also offers the potential to store oocytes to rescue endangered species by somatic cell nuclear transfer and for the generation of embryonic stem cells to study development in these species. We vitrified mouse oocytes using a range of concentrations of trehalose (0 to 0.3 M) and demonstrated that 0.1 and 0.3 M trehalose had similar developmental rates, which were significantly different to the 0.2 M cohort (P < 0.05). As mitochondria are important for fertilisation outcome, we observed that the clustering and distribution of mitochondria of the 0.2 M cohort were more affected by vitifrication than the other groups. Nevertheless, all 3 cohorts were able to develop to blastocyst, following in vitro fertilisation, although developmental rates were better for the 0.1 and 0.3 M cohorts than the 0.2 M cohort (P < 0.05). Whilst blastocysts gave rise to embryonic stem-like cells, it was apparent from immunocytochemistry and RT-PCR that these cells did not demonstrate true pluripotency and exhibited abnormal karyotypes. However, they gave rise to teratomas following injection into SCID mice and differentiated into cells of each of the germinal layers following in vitro differentiation. The transfer of 2-cell embryos from the 0.1 and 0.3 M cohorts resulted in the birth of live offspring that had normal karyotypes (9/10). When 2-cell embryos from vitrified oocytes underwent vitrification, and were thawed and transferred, live offspring were obtained that exhibited normal karyotypes, with the exception of one offspring who was larger and died at 7 months. We conclude that these studies highlight the importance of the endometrial environment for the maintenance of genetic stability and thus the propagation of specific genetic traits

"A má hora" do Estado Democrático de Direito no caudilhismo hispano-americano

    No full text

Activity of immobilized metallic phthalocyanines in the multicomponent synthesis of dihydropyridine derivatives and their subsequent aromatization

Several supported metallo-sulphonated phthalocyanines (FePcS-NH2-SiO2, CoPcS-NH2-SiO2, and CuPcS-NH2-SiO2) and iron hexadecachlorinated phthalocyanines (FePcCl16-NH2-SiO2 and FePcCl16-NH2-SBA-15) were synthesized and evaluated as alternative catalysts for a green multicomponent Hantzsch reaction between an aromatic aldehyde, methyl or ethylacetoacetate and ammonium acetate to obtain the corresponding dihydropyridines or phenylpyridines depending on the reaction conditions. High selectivities (over 80%) to the 2-phenylpyridines, under oxidant and solvent free conditions at room temperature were obtained. While the formation of 1,4-dihydripyridine derivatives were favored at temperatures above 45 °C (selectivities around of 50%). In addition, the 1,4-dihydripyridine derivatives were aromatized to the corresponding pyridines using t-BuOOH as oxidant, acetonitrile as solvent and at a reaction temperature of 50 °C.Fil: Sanchez, Laura Mabel. Arrabalde e universo: percursos da noção de linguagem em Jorge Luis Borges

    No full text

Replication Data for: Constitutional Origins and Liberal Democracy: A Global Analysis, 1900-2015

The files contain the data and Stata code to replicate all results in "Constitutional Origins and Liberal Democracy: A Global Analysis, 1900-2015", forthcoming at APSR. A strong tradition in democratic theory claims that only constitutions made with direct popular involvement can establish or deepen democracy. Against this view, we argue that new constitutions are likely to enhance liberal democracy when they emerge through a plural agreement among political elites with distinct bases of social support. Power dispersion during constitution writing induces the adoption of institutions that protect opposition forces from the arbitrary use of executive power without unduly impairing majority rule. However, since incumbents may renege on the bargain, the democratizing effect of politically plural constitutional agreements is likely to be larger in the short term, when the identity of negotiating political forces and the balance of power between them tend to remain stable. We find support for these arguments using an original global dataset on the origins of constitutions between 1900 and 2015 and a difference-in-differences design
