Università Politecnica delle Marche, Ancona, Italy View references (16) Abstract A very low cost prototype has been developed for the spatial and temporal analysis of human movement using an integrated system of last generation smartphones and a high-definition webcam, controlled by a laptop. The system can be used to analyse mainly planar motions in non-structured environments. In this paper, the accelerometer signal captured by the 3D sensor embedded in one smartphone, and the position of coloured markers extracted from the analysis of the webcam frames, are used for the computation of spatial-temporal parameters of gait. The system has been tested on a treadmill at different gait speeds. Accuracy of results is compared with that obtainable by a gold-standard stereometric instrumentation. The system is characterised by a very low cost and a very high level of automation. It has been thought to be used by non-expert users in ambulatory settings

Individual Contacts, Collective Patterns. Prato 1975-97, a story of interactions.

This article presents an agent-based model (ABM) of an Italian textile district where thousands of small firms specialize in particular phases of fabrics production. It is an empirical model because it reconstructs the communications between firms when they arrange production chains. In their turn, production chains reflect into the pattern of road traffic in the geographical areas where the district extends. It is a methodological model because it aims to show that ABMs can be used to reconstruct a web of movements in geographical space. ABMs are proposed as a tool for Hägerstrand’s “time-geography”.Industrial districts, Industrial clusters, Agent-based models, Prato

    Nonlinear analysis of posturographic data.

The aim of this work is to determine whether postural sway can be well described by nonlinear deterministic modelling. Since the results of nonlinear analysis depend on experimental data processing, emphasis was given to the assessment of a proper methodology to process posturographic data. Centre of Pressure (CoP) anteriorposterior (AP) displacements (stabilogram) were obtained by static posturography tests performed on control subjects. A nonlinear determinism test was applied to investigate the nature of data. A nonlinear filtering method allowed us to estimate properly the parameters of the nonlinear model without altering signal dynamics. The largest Lyapunov exponent (LLE) was estimated to quantify the chaotic behaviour of postural sway. LLE values were found to be positive although close to zero. This suggests that postural sway derives from a process exhibiting weakly chaotic dynamics

I grammatici tra libro e testo. Il caso di Orso beneventano

The codex 1086 of the Biblioteca Casanatense of Rome, with the Adbreviatio artis gramaticae of Ursus Beneventanus, is a case study particularly significant to deepen the relationship between author, text and book: in its first part the manuscript is an 'idiografo d'autore' because it reports the text 'fired' by the author; in the second one it collects the notes of the author himself, working materials stopped at a stage of sketch or partial drafting. A reconstruction of the figure of Ursus is attempted, a grammar teacher active in Benevento in the first half of the IXth century, and the didactic nature of his manual is deepened. Finally, some reservations are proposed at the recent critical edition of Barbara Maria Tarquini

Analogies, Conventions and Expert Systems in Medicine. Some Insights from a XIX Century Physiologist.

    No full text
Johannes von Kries, a nineteenth century physiologist, elaborated a theory of probability that takes account of the classification problems of medical diagnoses. Von Kries’s theory is still interesting in order to understand what difficulties expert systems should address, in medicine and elsewhere
