Studies on the weed pathosystems Cirsium arvense - Puccinia punctiformis
The biology and epidemiology of the rust fungus Puccinia punctiformis (Str.) Röhl was investigated to evaluate the potential of this rust as a biological agent against the clonal plant species Cirsium arvense (L) Scop., which is considered world-wide as a weed. The studies focussed on systemic infection of C. arvense shoots by P. punctiformis, the most damaging form of infection. The temporal and spatial distribution of teliospores, the inoculum for systemic infection, was quantified to explain the relatively low incidence of systemic infection at the study sites. These studies were extended by experiments under controlled conditions to determine the influence of temperature and resistance on root bud infection, a necessary step to systemic infection. Escape and resistance were factors that reduce the impact of P . punctiformis on C . arvense populations. Subsequent studies on transport of teliospores in the soil and selection of aggressive P . punctiformis strains are proposed as contributions to the development of P. punctiformis as a bioherbicide against C . arvense.</em

This contribution portrays J.J.A.A. Frantzen (1853 – 1923), the first Germanic scholar with a chair in Utrecht, as a teacher and professor of German. The author reaches the conclusion that even after a century the relation between philology and language teaching is still problematic. To counter this he advocates linguistic research into the learning processes involved in language teaching as an autonomous academic approach

In January of 2016, a misogynist blog post of the Anglo-Saxonist Allen Frantzen circulated online after a medieval studies graduate student who was searching for a citation discovered it on the retired professor’s personal website. One of the authors Frantzen cites in his writing on masculinity is the anarcho-fascist author Jack Donovan, whose online writing and photography feature postmedieval imaginations and intersecting ideologies of whiteness, ableism, and cisgender masculinity. Myself a graduate student of one of Frantzen’s advisees, I composed this experimental American sonnet of lines of translation from Old English by Miller Oberman, personal experience narrative of illness and disability by Audre Lorde, and one of Donovan’s online essays
Biological effects of mechanically and chemically dispersed oil on the Icelandic scallop (Chlamys islandica)
This study aimed to simulate conditions in which dispersant (Dasic NS) might be used to combat an oil spill in coastal sub-Arctic water of limited depth and water exchange in order to produce input data for Net Environmental Benefit Analysis (NEBA) of Arctic and sub-Arctic coastal areas. Concentration dependent differences in acute responses and long-term effects of a 48 h acute exposure to dispersed oil, with and without the application of a chemical dispersant, were assessed on the Arctic filter feeding bivalve Chlamys islandica. Icelandic scallops were exposed for 48 h to a range of spiked concentrations of mechanically and chemically dispersed oil. Short-term effects were assessed in terms of lysosomal membrane stability, superoxide dismutase, catalase, gluthatione S-transferases, glutathione peroxidases, glutathione reductase, glutathione, total oxyradical scavenging capacity, lipid peroxidation and peroxisomal proliferation. Post-exposure survival, growth and reproductive investment were followed for 2 months to evaluate any long-term consequence. Generally, similar effects were observed in scallops exposed to mechanically and chemically dispersed oil. Limited short-term effects were observed after 48 h, suggesting that a different timing would be required for measuring the possible onset of such effects. There was a concentration dependent increase in cumulative post-exposure mortality, but long-term effects on gonadosomatic index, somatic growth/condition factor did not differ among treatments
Identifying high Alpine geomorphological processes using permanent laser scanning time series
Global climate change affects mountain regions such as the European Alps. Consequently, glacier extents decrease, and proglacial areas, the areas that recently lost their ice cover, increase in size. These proglacial areas are subject to a high frequency and magnitude of geomorphological activity and act as a sediment source for downstream fluvial systems, extending the influence of their activity beyond proglacial margins. Therefore, a good understanding of the geomorphological activity in these regions is important and subject to numerous studies. Challenges to access Alpine proglacial areas complicate collection of data with high spatial and temporal coverage. A permanently installed terrestrial laser scanner (TLS) overlooking the Hintereisferner glacier in the Ötztaler Alps (Austria) provides daily ranging observations of a proglacial area. The aim of this study is to assess the potential of this permanent laser scanning system for identifying geomorphological processes in proglacial areas. Point clouds of this TLS system were rasterised into range images. An automated registration method is developed to ensure alignment of large quantities of range images in the event of scanner movement. Scans of the 2020 and 2022 summer were combined into two 4D spatiotemporal datasets, allowing analysis of range change time series for each raster cell. A principal component analysis (PCA) of the 4D spatiotemporal datasets is used to explore spatial and temporal patterns of change in the observed proglacial area. The range image registration procedure performed slightly worse than conventional registration methods, but allowed for automated registration of large quantities of scans. Based on the patterns found in the PCA, as well as in the range time series and precipitation data, different geomorphological processes are identified in the observed proglacial area at daily time scales, with magnitudes of several meters. Among these processes are debris flows in gullies, and slumps on lateral moraines. These results demonstrate that characteristic patterns of topographical change can be distinguished using PCA, and PCA is a promising method to be used in other studies exploiting 4D spatiotemporal datasets. The identification of different geomorphological processes indicates that the permanent TLS system could be of use for further research on geomorphological activity in proglacial areas, such as reworking of lateral moraines, while the developed methodology could be used in other studies exploring 4D spatiotemporal datasets as well.Geoscience and Remote Sensin
The Ecological Network City: Luxury Living in Electronic-guided Eco-logical Towers
Onderzoeksdoel: In hoeverre kunnen nieuwe technieken van ICT en duurzaam bouwen integraal toegepast worden in het ontwerp van een stadsbuurt zodat deze voldoet aan de eisen van een duurzame en moderne netwerksamenleving. Probleemstelling: De netwerksamenleving is een meerkeuzesamenleving met ingebouwde intelligentie in onze apparaten, kantoren, huizen en wegen. Het komt via netwerk en beeldscherm tot ons. Digitale technologie maakt ons minder afhankelijk van ruimte en van tijd. Digitale intervententie vervangt veel menselijke interventie, zo kunnen we tijd, energie en materiaal besparen. Het afstudeeratelier ‘De Netwerkstad’onderzoekt mogelijke invloeden van ICT op de ruimtelijke omgeving.Vanuit verschillende afstudeerrichtingen zoeken deelnemers naar de bijdrage van informatietechnologieen aan nieuwe concepten van ruimtelijke planning. Mijn onderzoek heeft zich uiteindelijk, heel breed, over drie schalen verdeelt. Deel 1 “The Ecological Network City” is een stedebouwkundig onderzoek naar een variant van de ID-wijk, op het schaalnivo van de buurt. Er wordt naar meerdere sectoren gekeken zoals de herstructurering van het gebied, landschap, infrastructuur en milieu. Maar er wordt ook iets gezegd over de sociaal-economische en beleidsmatige kant van een ID-wijk. Deel 2, genaamd “Home Electronic Networks”, onderzoekt de ontwikkelingen en mogelijkheden op het schaalnivo van het interieur en detail, met name de installaties zijn van belang. Dit lijkt een grote schaalsprong maar komt voort uit de gedachte dat een wezenlijk onderdeel van de ID-wijk , de ID-woning (of smarthome) is. Wanneer de intelligente en duurzame technologieen op dit schaalnivo goed opgelost zijn kan men de ID-woning als bouwdeel of radartje van een heel gebouw, wijk of stad zien. Hierbij draait het om de sector technologie , zowel duurzame en milieuvriendelijke als intelligente en netwerktechnologieen. Deel 3 , “The LEE Towers”, is een architectonische uitwerking van de eerste twee onderzochte delen. In het ontwerp van dit gebouw komen het groter geheel van de “Ecological Network City” en het technologisch detail van de “Home Electronic networks” bij elkaar op het tussenliggende schaalnivo van het gebouw.De architect heeft binnen de beperkingen van het stedebouwkundig ontwerp en de toepasbare technologie nog genoeg vrijheid en keus om naar eigen inzichten de vormgeving van een gebouw te bepalen. Voor conclusies verwijs ik naar de presentatie en het verslag. De presentatie en afstudeerproject zijn beloond met een 9 en kreeg een eervolle vermelding van de decaan. Tevens was ik de eerste afstudeerder op Bouwkunde die het interfacultaire diploma TiDO (Techniek in Duurzame Ontwikkeling) behaalde. Hiervan is toen een bericht geweest in het faculteitsblad. It includes not only introspections on the course readings but also the larger course themes including the use of memory, and universal truths — be there any. It’s about struggle, the internal and the external, it’s an overview of a lot of realizations the author had during her college career. It’s about learning to be ok with the fluctuation called life
