Single- and double-layer aluminum corrugated core sandwiches under quasi-static and dynamic loadings

    No full text
The crushing of single- and double-layer zig-zag trapezoidal corrugated core sandwiches was investigated experimentally and numerically at quasi-static and dynamic rates. The buckling stress of sandwiches increased when the rate increased from quasi-static to dynamic. The increased buckling stresses were ascribed to the micro-inertial effects, which altered the buckling mode of the core from three plastic hinges to higher number of plastic hinge formations. The initial buckling stress was numerically shown to be imperfection sensitive when the imperfection size was comparable with the buckling length. The numerical buckling stresses of zig-zag and straight corrugated cores were similar, while higher inertial effects were found in triangular corrugated core

Mustafa Balel (1945- ) whose career as a novelist started with Yeni Ortam (New Circumstances) in 1972 and pursued up to now is distinguished from his contemporaries as depicted social realities and sharpened details. During his art career, he produced novels, stories, narration, itineraries and works in children?s literature. Balel has presented the social structure to readers. In this context, the author argues that Turkish society is not a patriarchal as supposed but matriarchal. This case has lead to dominant women characters in his works. Balel, who have always stuck to realism, reflected his own life in his works. While doing this, he made use of children narrators who tell the truth as it is. The author who emphasizes social stratification in his works which is based on socioeconomic structure follows a social realistic line. In his works, he mostly treated family, violence, women dominancy, loneliness and immigration. In parallel with social issues he handled, Balel used idioms and proverbs established in people?s local language and thus did not have a language style different from people. This characteristic is seen in all his works in different literature genres

This study aims to determine the use of interactional metadiscourse in articles from the domains of Turkish language and literature. The study employed a descriptive research model to examine 20 articles from the Mustafa Kemal University Journal of Social Sciences Institute (all articles were published between 2010 and 2015 and each has only a single author). Of these randomly selected articles, 10 were on Turkish language education and 10 were concerned with Turkish literature. Hyland and Tse's metadiscourse model was adopted to examine markers of interactional metadiscourse in all fundamental parts of these articles. For the evaluation of the obtained data, the content analysis technique and the Mann-Whitney U test were used to determine whether the interactional metadiscourse demonstrates any significant differences regarding the domains of Turkish language education and literature. Experts were consulted to ensure the reliability of the research. As a result, this study revealed that there is more use of interactional metadiscourse markers in the field of Turkish language education than in the field of literature, and this difference is significant, according to the Mann-Whitney U test. Further, it was found that hedges and boosters demonstrate a significant difference in studies on Turkish language education and literature; however, no significant difference in the uses of attitude markers, engagement markers, and self-mentions was observed. This study aims to determine the use of interactional metadiscourse in articles from the domains of Turkish language and literature. Cross Wedge Rolling (CWR) is a metal forming process in which work pieces are deformed by wedges located on flat plates or rolls and it is generally conducted at elevated temperatures. However, CWR method has disadvantages such as damage evolution during process and difficult tool design for complex parts. In this study, CWR tool design supported with finite element simulations for a hollow complex part is given. Finite element analyses are carried out with designed tools and tool geometry is optimised according to FE results. Simulations show that high stretching angles result in bending of hollow work pieces. It is also seen that serrations should be used in tool-work piece contact areas which have low friction

5th International Symposium on Explosion, Shock Wave and High-Strain-Rate Phenomena, ESHP 2016; 25 September 2016 through 28 September 2016E-glass/polyester composite plates and 1050 H14 aluminum trapezoidal corrugated core composite sandwich plates were projectile impact tested using 1050 H14 aluminum trapezoidal fin corrugated projectiles with and without face sheets. The projectile impact tests were simulated in LS-DYNA. The MAT_162 material model parameters of the composite were determined and then optimized by the quasi-static and high strain rate tests. Non-centered projectile impact test models were validated by the experimental and numerical back face displacements of the impacted plates. Then, the centered projectile impact test models were developed and the resultant plate displacements were compared with those of the TNT mass equal Conwep simulations. The projectiles with face sheets induced similar displacement with the Conwep blast simulation, while the projectiles without face sheets underestimated the Conwep displacements, which was attributed to more uniform pressure distribution with the use of the face sheets on the test plates. © 2018 Trans Tech Publications, Switzerland

The impact responses and the finite element modeling of layered trapezoidal corrugated aluminum core and aluminum sheet interlayer sandwich structures

    No full text
The impact responses of brazed and adhesively bonded layered 1050 H14 trapezoidal corrugated aluminum core and aluminum sheet interlayer sandwich panels with 3003 and 1050 H14 aluminum alloy face sheets were investigated in a drop weight tower using spherical, flat and conical end striker tips. The full geometrical models of the tests were implemented using the LS-DYNA. The panels tested with spherical and flat striker tips were not penetrated and experienced slightly higher deformation forces and energy absorptions in 0°/90° corrugated layer orientation than in 0°/0° orientation. However, the panels impacted using a conical striker tip were penetrated/perforated and showed comparably smaller deformation forces and energy absorptions, especially in 0°/90° layer orientation. The simulation and experimental force values were shown to reasonably agree with each other at the large extent of deformation and revealed the progressive fin folding of corrugated core layers and bending of interlayer sheets as the main deformation mechanisms. The experimentally and numerically determined impact velocity sensitivity of the tested panels was attributed to the micro inertial effects which increased the critical buckling loads of fin layers at increasingly high loading rates

Experimental and numerical studies on the quasi-static and dynamic crushing responses of multi-layer trapezoidal aluminum corrugated sandwiches

    No full text
The axial crushing responses of bonded and brazed multi-layer 1050 H14 trapezoid alaluminum corru- gated core (fin) sandwich structures, with and without aluminum interlayer sheets in 0°/0° and 0°/90° core orientations, were both experimentally and numerically investigated at quasi-static and dynamic strain rates. Multi-layering the core layers decreased the buckling stress and increased the densification strain. The experimental and simulation compression stress–strain curves showed reasonable agree-ments with each other. Two main crushing modes were observed experimentally and numerically: the progressive fin folding and the shearing interlayer aluminum sheets. Both, the simulation and experimental buckling and post-buckling stresses increased when the interlayer sheets were constraint laterally. The multi-layer samples without interlayer sheets in 0°/90° core orientation exhibited higher buckling stresses than the samples in 0°/0° core orientation. The increased buckling stress of 0°/0° oriented core samples without interlayer sheets at high strain rate was attributed to the micro-inertial effects which led to increased bending forces at higher impact velocities
