    Grażyna joins the game

    No full text
A review of Radosław Rychcik's Grażyny (Ludwik Solski Theater in Tarnów, premiere: 23.05.2015) presented during the 2nd New Theater Festival in Rzeszów (23-30.10.2015). Beata Kustra interprets the performance mainly through the lens of Maria Janion's book Women and the Spirit of Otherness, quoted at the beginning of the performance. The author attempts to show that Rychcik adopts Janion's perspective, showing Grażyna to be a woman who adopted the male social role and who can become a heroine only posthumously - when her heroic deed becomes a myth. Kustra points out many motifs and devices used by the director and comes to the conclusion that some served only to make the performance more attractive

    The beatnik, the hipster

Writing about Howl (Teatr Łaźnia Nowa, prem. 11 Jun 2015) directed by Maciej Podstawny, Beata Kustra focuses above all on the facts about the Beat Generation referred to by the director. The author praises him for a solid account of the main assumptions of the movement and notices the association between the beatniks and contemporary hipsters, emphasised in the performance According to Kustra, the actors try on the ideas of Beat Generation and check whether they are still relevant. Balancing between the notions of "hipsters" and "beatniks" becomes the key point of the review

Going Beyond Counting First Authors in Author Co-citation Analysis

The present study examines one of the fundamental aspects of author co-citation analysis (ACA) - the way co-citation counts are defined. Co-citation counting provides the data on which all subsequent statistical analyses and mappings are based, and we compare ACA results based on two different types of co-citation counting - the traditional type that only counts the first one among a cited work's authors on the one hand and a non-traditional type that takes into account the first 5 authors of a cited work on the other hand. Results indicate that the picture produced through this non-traditional author co-citation counting contains more coherent author groups and is therefore considerably clearer. However, this picture represents fewer specialties in the research field being studied than that produced through the traditional first-author co-citation counting when the same number of top-ranked authors is selected and analyzed. Reasons for these effects are discussed

    Confrontations in words

Beata Kustra describes the 41st Opole Polish Classics Theater Confrontations (5-10.04.2016). She outlines the extensive festival program and the arrangement of the space of the Kochanowski Theater in Opole for many parallel activities, largely focusing on the choices that festival viewers were forced to make. She also mentions the combination of this year’s edition of the festival with the Living Classics Competition for Staging Old Works of Polish Literature, and comments on the appointment of two separate teams of jurors - one from society, the other made up of journalists and critics. She then depicts the dramaturgy of the word and the adaptation strategies of the competition entries, giving a full description of Jacek Głomb’s production of The Self-appointed Czar

    Variations on the Author

“Variations on the Author” discusses two of Eduardo Coutinho’s recent films (Um Dia na Vida, from 2010, and Últimas Conversas, posthumously released in 2015) and their contribution to the general question of documentary authorship. The director’s filmography is characterized by a consistent yet self-effacing form of authorial self-inscription: Coutinho often features as an interviewer that rather than express opinions propels discourses; an interviewer that is good at listening. This mode of self-inscription characterizes him as an author who is not expressive but who is nonetheless markedly present on the screen. In Um Dia na Vida, however, Coutinho is completely absent form the image, while Últimas Conversas, on the contrary, includes a confessional prologue that moves the director from the margins to the center of his films. This article examines the ways in which these works stand out in the filmography of a director who offers new insights into the notion of cinematic authorship

Appropriate Similarity Measures for Author Cocitation Analysis

We provide a number of new insights into the methodological discussion about author cocitation analysis. We first argue that the use of the Pearson correlation for measuring the similarity between authors’ cocitation profiles is not very satisfactory. We then discuss what kind of similarity measures may be used as an alternative to the Pearson correlation. We consider three similarity measures in particular. One is the well-known cosine. The other two similarity measures have not been used before in the bibliometric literature. Finally, we show by means of an example that our findings have a high practical relevance.information science;Pearson correlation;cosine;similarity measure;author cocitation analysis

Beata Kustra reviews Paweł Wodziński's Grapes of Wrath, based on the John Steinbeck novel (Polski Theater in Bydgoszcz, premiere: 16.01.2016). She hazards the thesis that the open ending of the performance and the director's abandonment of the hopeful finale of Steinbeck's novel might suggest that the Joad family represents contemporary migrants. Kustra points out the spare set design and the musical layer of the play, demonstrating that the text is most important in Wodziński's Grapes of Wrath. She thinks that the judicious selection from Steinbeck's novel means that this play can be read as an attempt to diagnose the crisis in the capitalist era

Beata Kustra reviews Paweł Świątek's Constant Prince (S. Jaracz Theater in Łódź, premiere: 30.10.2015) in the context of computer games and contemporary political and economic problems. She points out that the battle for Ceuta - which turns out to be a water tank in this production - is a struggle for the real lives of other people. She also reads the play in terms of the present refugee crisis and the global problem of the future, i.e. water supply shortages. Following the play's suggestion, she compares the character of the Constant Prince in Paweł Paczesny's interpretation with the role played by Ryszard Cieślak in Jerzy Grotowski's famous staging of the play in 1965

Dispelling the Myths Behind First-author Citation Counts

We conducted a full-scale evaluative citation analysis study of scholars in the XML research field to explore just how different from each other author rankings resulting from different citation counting methods actually are, and to demonstrate the capability of emerging data and tools on the Web in supporting more realistic citation counting methods. Our results contest some common arguments for the continued use of first-author citation counts in the evaluation of scholars, such as high correlations between author rankings by first-author citation counts and other citation counting methods, and high costs of using more realistic citation counting methods that are not well-supported by the ISI databases. It is argued that increasingly available digital full text research papers make it possible for citation analysis studies to go beyond what the ISI databases have directly supported and to employ more sophisticated methods
