NADPH oxidase (NOX) in the heart : the interplay of NOX-derived ROS in β1-integrin-induced survival signalling
Moderate levels of reactive oxygen species (ROS) act as mediators in cellular signalling processes. An important source of cardiac ROS is the highly expressed NADPH oxidase (NOX) family isoform NOX2. However, little is known about whether NOX-derived ROS are protective in the heart.
In this study we show that CD29 (β1-integrin), a cell adhesion receptor highly expressed on cardiac muscle cells, induces NOX-dependent ROS. CD29 is known to be mandatory in cell growth and survival, and non-functional CD29 causes severe heart disease. We demonstrate that NOX2-derived ROS are essential for CD29-induced survival signalling, including the PI3K/PKB and MEK/ERK pathways. Furthermore, CD29-induced NOX-derived ROS are indispensible in the inhibition of the pro-apoptotic kinase GSK-3β, which we uncovered as a downstream target of both the ERK and PKB survival pathways in cardiac muscle cells. These findings clearly add to the growing body of evidence suggesting that moderate ROS levels are beneficial to the cell and highlight the crucial role of NOX2-derived ROS for cell survival in the heart

47 patients in 14 families with the rare genodermatosis keratosis punctata palmoplantaris Buschke-Fischer-Brauer
We summarize the clinical data of 47 patients with the rare genodermatosis keratosis punctata palmoplantaris Buschke-Fischer-Brauer. The pedigrees of 14 German families were studied. In three families there was only one member affected, two or more affected members were found in the other families. These family pedigrees were consistent with autosomal dominant inheritance. Variable expression of, the disease was noted in members within one family. Over pressure points punctate keratoses coalesced into hyperkeratotic plaques. There was palmoplantar hyperhidrosis in 3 families associated with keratosis. Continuous systemic retinoid treatment can clear symptoms. Future genetic classification on a molecular basis may reveal the existance of more than one entity of this clinically heterogeneous genodermatosis
A new family with the rare genodermatosis keratosis punctata palmoplantaris Buschke-Fischer-Brauer
We describe a new family with the rare genodermatosis keratosis punctata palmo-plantaris Buschke-Fischer-Brauer (keratoma disseminatum). in all, 3 family members in 3 generations were affected, a pattern consistent with autosomal dominant inheritance. Clinical symptoms started in the third decade with disseminated, small, round, hyperkeratotic papules on the palms and soles. Punctate keratoses coalesced into hyperkeratotic plaques on pressure points. Identification of additional families is necessary to permit definitive genetic classification of this genodermatosis

Physically Based Video Editing
Convincing manipulation of objects in live action videos is a difficult and often tedious task. Skilled video editors achieve this with the help of modern professional tools, but complex motions might still lack physical realism since existing tools do not consider the laws of physics. On the other hand, physically based simulation promises a high degree of realism, but typically creates a virtual 3D scene animation rather than returning an edited version of an input live action video. We propose a framework that combines video editing and physics-based simulation. Our tool assists unskilled users in editing an input image or video while respecting the laws of physics and also leveraging the image content. We first fit a physically based simulation that approximates the object's motion in the input video. We then allow the user to edit the physical parameters of the object, generating a new physical behavior for it. The core of our work is the formulation of an image-aware constraint within physics simulations. This constraint manifests as external control forces to guide the object in a way that encourages proper texturing at every frame, yet producing physically plausible motions. We demonstrate the generality of our method on a variety of physical interactions: rigid motion, multi-body collisions, clothes and elastic bodies.
