    No full text
The narrative of this Manifesto reflects upon the experience and exchange of the author during his 10-year experience with Civil Society Organizations working on Environment, Authorities, Communities and International Stakeholders operating in Albania. This document builds upon evidence-based information but it is not a collection of facts. It rather is an expression of the author perception upon the environmental landscape reality from a non-diplomatic nor political but straight- forward approach

A low volume oxygenator for open well Liver-on-a-Chip tissue culture

Thesis: S.M., Massachusetts Institute of Technology, Department of Mechanical Engineering, 2018.This electronic version was submitted by the student author. The certified thesis is available in the Institute Archives and Special Collections.Cataloged from student-submitted PDF version of thesis.Includes bibliographical references (pages 139-142).MicroPhysiological Systems (MPS) show significant promise in speeding drug development and advancing basic research. They may serve better than animal models for obtaining accurate human response data and thereby reducing failed clinical trials. The CN Bio LiverChip is one such commercial MPS device which cultures liver cells on a perforated polystyrene scaffold and actively circulates cell culture medium through them. Reducing the total circulating volume is desirable to increase the concentration of difficult-to-detect compounds, improve autocrine signaling, and achieve more physiologically relevant drug decay times. However, achieving adequate oxygenation at lower volumes is challenging due to surface tension effects. This thesis describes an open-well, flow-through MPS platform with a low-volume oxygenator, at a total circulating volume of approximately 500 [mu]L. The oxygenator uses the interior corner of a hydrophilic spiral to constrain the circulating fluid and to create a thin fluid region, which decreases the diffusion depth relative to exposed surface area, thereby improving oxygenation. The oxygenator performs equivalently to the LiverChip at a fraction of the volume, and features a downward slope that prevents fluid from accumulating in the oxygenator, which could deplete the cell culture well. The fluidic configuration and other design considerations are described, as well as hardware testing results and improved methods for preventing fluid from bypassing the scaffold. Dintr-un portret de grup cu marele război. Poetul Avram Steuerman-Rodion

    No full text
This paper is a part of a larger research dedicated to the Romanian poetry of the Two World Wars, which separates different authorial postures, from the writer who becomes combatant to the combatant who becomes a writer. The study aims to recover the war poetry written by Avram Steuerman-Rodion (1872-1918), a Jewish Romanian writer who was recruited in the Word War I as a military doctor and awarded for his bravery, but who will choose to commit suicide after demobilization. The critical interrogation aims to trace the specificity of the poetic formula existing in author’s front sonnets, published posthumously in the volume – a rarity today – Frontul roșu [Red Front] (1920), questioning simultaneously the preference for the order of the sonnet in times of disorder and chaos. Along with this exercise to recover the author and his work, the paper is interested in a tragic biographical paradox – which makes the trauma of readjustment to the rhythm of civil society outweigh that of adapting to the horrors of the front – with echoes in literary creation

The Image of Rodion Raskolnikov in Ivan Shmelev’s Late Stories “Why It Happened” (1944) and “Notes of a Non-Writer” (1949)

The article considers for the first time the image of Raskolnikov in the stories by Ivan Shmelev “Why It Happened” and “Notes of a Non-Writer.” It shows how in these stories the writer, using artistic techniques, names, images and quotations from Dostoevsky’s novels, is largely oriented towards the tradition of the latter’s work. The story “Why It Happened” presents the motif of a dream in which a dialogue with the devil takes place, Ivan Fedorovich Karamazov is mentioned, and the name of Rodion Raskolnikov is pronounced. The author of the articles affirms that the hero of Shmelev’s story — a professor, in his youth a revolutionary-minded student and atheist — has a typological kinship with the hero of Crime and Punishment. The words, voiced in a distorted form by the student’s companion during dinner in a restaurant: “And you, Andel, stole so much? or reproached the old woman, like Raskolkin?” help to comprehend the image of Shmelev’s hero more deeply. It also demonstrates the “independent life” of Rodion Raskolnikov outside of Dostoevsky’s novel. The story “Notes of a non-Writer,” considered the beginning of a larger novel, includes many plots. The key one is about the resurrection of Uncle Vasya, and it is also associated with Dostoevsky’s works. Here, Crime and Punishment is quoted directly. Not only the semantic closeness is important, but also the chronological precision in both narratives. An excerpt from Crime and Punishment about Raskolnikov (“in the second week of Great Lent it was his turn to commune together with the entire barracks”) reminds the narrator of the assassination of Tsar Alexander II on March 1, 1881, at the beginning of Great Lent and the reaction of the people to his uncle, an atheist and revolutionary. In both cases, the marker in determining friends and foes for ordinary people is the faith in God. The uncle returns to the family — comes down from his mezzanine — on Easter. This, in turn, reminds the hero of the chapter “Dream in Cana of Galilee” from The Brothers Karamazov and gives courage. The extremely important quote from Crime and Punishment in “Notes of a Non-Writer” showed the same milestones in the spiritual movement of Rodion Raskolnikov and Uncle Vasya from the mezzanine on the way to resurrection

Evaluation of Hydraulic Excavator and Rope Shovel Major Maintenance Costs in Operation

    No full text
In this thesis, results of a comparison study of rope shovels and hydraulic excavators undertaken by the author between September 2014 and May 2015 is presented. The study was implemented by a literature search, collecting data from KMG (Komatsu Mining Germany) which is the Komatsu Limited manufacturing facility for super large hydraulic mining shovels (16 to 42m3 Bucket Capacity) in Europe, and receiving and analyzing information from a coal mining company about performance parameters of rope and hydraulic shovels with bucket capacities ranging from 10 up to 33m3. The objective of the study is to compare the effectiveness of two types of excavators in surface mining during their life cycle from 0 up to 60,000 operational hours. Each machine performance was surveyed on a month by month basis and involved assessing such parameters as: operational hours, scheduled inspections and maintenance, unscheduled repairs, number of failures, production. Consequently it allowed calculating general indicators to have to be priced in the study and their change with increase of total operational life. These indicators were: physical availability and hourly output of an excavator (normalized to 1m3 of bucket capacity). Moreover, expenditures related to possession of mining shovels (spare parts, fuels, lubricants, electricity, consumables) were also taken into consideration to calculate and compare life cycle costs of machines

The importance of developing the natural gas liquefaction industry in the Russian Federation is caused by political and economic reasons. In contrast to pipeline export gas supply, when Russia gets into serious dependence on transit countries and  countries consuming gas liquefied natural gas (LNG) provides an  opportunity to manoeuvre volumes and directions of sales. Due to  the fact that the Asia-Pacific region is taking the leading positions in  global gas consumption Russian oil and gas companies need LNG to  re-orientate gas flows in the eastern direction. The author shows  that in order to build the advanced highly technological gas industry  Russian companies today should set the foundation for refinery of  traditional natural gas and oil gas and methane from coal layers too  get liquefied synthesis-fuel of high quality. In the near future Russia  should take a leading position in the global trade on highly technological gas produce
