    Maximum Likelihood Estimation for the Offset-Normal Shape Distributions Using EM

    The offset-normal shape distribution is defined as the induced shape distribution of a Gaussian distributed random configuration in the plane. Such distributions were introduced by Dryden and Mardia (1991) and represent an important parameterized family of shape distributions for shape analysis. This article reports a method for performing maximum likelihood estimation of parameters involved. The method consists of an EM algorithm with simple update rules and is shown to be easily applicable in many practical examples. We also show the necessary adjustments needed for using this algorithm for shape regression, missing landmark data, and mixtures of offset-normal shape distributions

    Limiting behaviour of the stationary search cost distribution driven by a generalized gamma process

    Consider a list of labeled objects that are organized in a heap. At each time, object j is selected with probability pj and moved to the top of the heap. This procedure defines a Markov chain on the set of permutations which is referred to in the literature as Move-to-Front rule. The present contribution focuses on the stationary search cost, namely the position of the requested item in the heap when the Markov chain is in equilibrium. We consider the scenario where the number of objects is infinite and the probabilities pj's are defined as the normalization of the increments of a subordinator. In this setting, we provide an exact formula for the moments of any order of the stationary search cost distribution. We illustrate the new findings in the case of a generalized gamma subordinator and deal with an extension to the two-parameter Poisson-Dirichlet process, also known as Pitman-Yor process

    The Offset Normal Shape Distribution for Dynamic Shape Analysis

    This paper deals with the statistical analysis of landmark data observed at different temporal instants. Statistical analysis of dynamic shapes is a problem with significant challenges due to the difficulty in providing a description of the shape changes over time, across subjects and over groups of subjects. There are several modelling strategies which can be used for dynamic shape analysis. Here, we use the exact distribution theory for the shape of planar correlated Gaussian configurations and derive the induced offset-normal shape distribution. Various properties of this distribution are investigated, and some special cases discussed. This work is a natural progression of what has been proposed in Mardia and Dryden (1989), Dryden and Mardia (1991), Mardia andWalder (1994) and Kume and Welling (2010)

    Going Beyond Counting First Authors in Author Co-citation Analysis

    The present study examines one of the fundamental aspects of author co-citation analysis (ACA) - the way co-citation counts are defined. Co-citation counting provides the data on which all subsequent statistical analyses and mappings are based, and we compare ACA results based on two different types of co-citation counting - the traditional type that only counts the first one among a cited work's authors on the one hand and a non-traditional type that takes into account the first 5 authors of a cited work on the other hand. Results indicate that the picture produced through this non-traditional author co-citation counting contains more coherent author groups and is therefore considerably clearer. However, this picture represents fewer specialties in the research field being studied than that produced through the traditional first-author co-citation counting when the same number of top-ranked authors is selected and analyzed.     “Variations on the Author” discusses two of Eduardo Coutinho’s recent films (Um Dia na Vida, from 2010, and Últimas Conversas, posthumously released in 2015) and their contribution to the general question of documentary authorship. The director’s filmography is characterized by a consistent yet self-effacing form of authorial self-inscription: Coutinho often features as an interviewer that rather than express opinions propels discourses; an interviewer that is good at listening. This mode of self-inscription characterizes him as an author who is not expressive but who is nonetheless markedly present on the screen. In Um Dia na Vida, however, Coutinho is completely absent form the image, while Últimas Conversas, on the contrary, includes a confessional prologue that moves the director from the margins to the center of his films. This article examines the ways in which these works stand out in the filmography of a director who offers new insights into the notion of cinematic authorship

    Appropriate Similarity Measures for Author Cocitation Analysis

    We provide a number of new insights into the methodological discussion about author cocitation analysis. We first argue that the use of the Pearson correlation for measuring the similarity between authors’ cocitation profiles is not very satisfactory. We then discuss what kind of similarity measures may be used as an alternative to the Pearson correlation. We consider three similarity measures in particular. One is the well-known cosine. The other two similarity measures have not been used before in the bibliometric literature.     Shape Analysis In Protein Structure Alignment

    In this Thesis we explore the problem of structural alignment of protein molecules using statistical shape analysis techniques. The structural alignment problem can be divided into three smaller ones: the representation of protein structures, the sampling of possible alignments between the molecules and the evaluation of a given alignment. Previous work done in this field, can be divided in two approaches: an adhoc algorithmic approach from the Bioinformatics literature and an approach using statistical methods either in a likelihood or Bayesian framework. Both approaches address the problem from a different scope. For example, the algorithmic approach is easy to implement but lacks an overall modelling framework, and the Bayesian address this issue but sometimes the implementation is not straightforward. We develop a method which is easy to implement and is based on statistical assumptions. In order to asses the quality of a given alignment we use a size and shape likelihood density which is based in the structure information of the molecules. This likelihood density is also extended to include sequence infor- mation and gap penalty parameters so that biologically meaningful solution can be produced. Furthermore, we develop a search algorithm to explore possible alignments from a given starting point. The results suggest that our approach produces better or equal alignments when it is compared to the most recent struc- tural alignment methods. In most of the cases we managed to achieve a higher number of matched atoms combined with a high TMscore. Moreover, we extended our method using Bayesian techniques to perform alignments based on posterior modes. In our approach, we estimate directly the mode of the posterior distribution which provides the final alignment between two molecules. We also, choose a different approach for treating the mean parameter. In previous methods the mean was either integrated out of the likelihood density or considered as fixed. We choose to assign a prior over it and obtain its posterior mode. Finally, we consider an extension of the likelihood model assuming a Normal density for both the matched and unmatched parts of a molecule and diagonal covariance structure. We explore two different variants. In the first we consider a fixed zero mean for the unmatched parts of the molecules and in the second we consider a common mean for both the matched and unmatched parts. Based on simulated and real results, both models seems to perform well in obtaining high number of matched atoms and high TMscore

    Dispelling the Myths Behind First-author Citation Counts

    We conducted a full-scale evaluative citation analysis study of scholars in the XML research field to explore just how different from each other author rankings resulting from different citation counting methods actually are, and to demonstrate the capability of emerging data and tools on the Web in supporting more realistic citation counting methods. Our results contest some common arguments for the continued use of first-author citation counts in the evaluation of scholars, such as high correlations between author rankings by first-author citation counts and other citation counting methods, and high costs of using more realistic citation counting methods that are not well-supported by the ISI databases. It is argued that increasingly available digital full text research papers make it possible for citation analysis studies to go beyond what the ISI databases have directly supported and to employ more sophisticated methods
