Adaptive Real-Time Communication for Wireless Cyber-Physical Systems
Low-power wireless technology promises greater flexibility and lower costs in cyber-physical systems. To reap these benefits, communication protocols must deliver packets reliably within real-time deadlines across resource-constrained devices, while adapting to changes in application requirements (e.g., traffic demands) and network state (e.g., link qualities). Existing protocols do not solve all these challenges simultaneously, because their operation is either localized or a function of network state, which changes unpredictably over time. By contrast, this paper claims a global approach that does not use network state information as input can overcome these limitations. The Blink protocol proves this claim by providing hard guarantees on end- to-end deadlines of received packets in multi-hop low-power wireless networks, while seamlessly handling changes in application requirements and network state. We build Blink on the non real-time Low-Power Wireless Bus (LWB), and design new scheduling algorithms based on the earliest deadline first policy. Using a dedicated priority queue data structure, we demonstrate a viable implementation of our algorithms on re- source-constrained devices. Experiments show that Blink: (i) meets all deadlines of received packets; (ii) de- livers 99.97 % of packets on a 94-node testbed; (iii) minimizes communication energy consumption within the limits of the underlying LWB; (iv) supports end-to-end deadlines of 100 ms across 4 hops and 9 sources; and (v) runs up to 4.1× faster than a conventional scheduler implementation on popular microcontrollers
An axiomatic framework for ex-ante dynamic pricing mechanisms in smart grid
In electricity markets, the choice of the right pricing regime is crucial for the utilities because the price they charge to their consumers, in anticipation of their demand in real-time, is a key determinant of their profits and ultimately their survival in competitive energy markets. Among the existing pricing regimes, in this paper, we consider ex-ante dynamic pricing schemes as (i) they help to address the peak demand problem (a crucial problem in smart grids), and (ii) they are transparent and fair to consumers as the cost of electricity can be calculated before the actual consumption. In particular, we propose an axiomatic framework that establishes the conceptual underpinnings of the class of ex-ante dynamic pricing schemes. We first propose five key axioms that reflect the criteria that are vital for energy utilities and their relationship with consumers. We then prove an impossibility theorem to show that there is no pricing regime that satisfies all the five axioms simultaneously. We also study multiple cost functions arising from various pricing regimes to examine the subset of axioms that they satisfy. We believe that our proposed framework in this paper is first of its kind to evaluate the class of ex-ante dynamic pricing schemes in a manner that can be operationalised by energy utilities
Going Beyond Counting First Authors in Author Co-citation Analysis
The present study examines one of the fundamental aspects of author co-citation analysis (ACA) - the way co-citation
counts are defined. Co-citation counting provides the data on which all subsequent statistical analyses and mappings
are based, and we compare ACA results based on two different types of co-citation counting - the traditional type that
only counts the first one among a cited work's authors on the one hand and a non-traditional type that takes into
account the first 5 authors of a cited work on the other hand. Results indicate that the picture produced through this non-traditional author co-citation counting contains more coherent author groups and is therefore considerably clearer. However, this picture represents fewer specialties in the research field being studied than that produced through the traditional first-author co-citation counting when the same number of top-ranked authors is selected and analyzed. Reasons for these effects are discussed
An OGC 3D tiling technique based user-interactive platform for digital twins in a virtual reality environment
There has been an ever increasing focus on the development of smart cities, both by big corporate in the field of Information Communication and Technology as well as respective governments responsible for these cities worldwide. This in combination with the influx of easily accessible data owing to cheaper and efficient sensors has risen to the concept of digital twinning of urban spaces and cities.Urban digital twins require the city to be represented in 3-dimensional digitally, these datasets are oftentimes too large to be provided on as-is basis for most platforms. To tackle this problem of large 3D datasets, the OGC 3D tiling specifications were formed and accepted in 2019.This thesis attempts to develop a neighbourhood designing platform which would enable users to design neighbourhoods in 3D while being able to experience the design in an immersive manner by utilizing virtual reality’s capability to observe 3D assets in scales which are not possible using a physical model or a 2 dimensional neighbourhood plan, employing the OGC 3D tiling technique to understand the extent to which a combination of existing 3D datasets can be made with a user-interactive neighbourhood designing platform in a VR environment.The results of the study reveal that using our methodology, it is possible to combine existing 3D datasets with user made neighbourhood design with their own 3D assets of any level of detail and furthermore, it is possible to utilize instanced tiling format to disseminate the neighbourhood design as a standard 3D tiled design.Geomatic
Variations on the Author
“Variations on the Author” discusses two of Eduardo Coutinho’s recent films (Um Dia na Vida, from 2010, and Últimas Conversas, posthumously released in 2015) and their contribution to the general question of documentary authorship. The director’s filmography is characterized by a consistent yet self-effacing form of authorial self-inscription: Coutinho often features as an interviewer that rather than express opinions propels discourses; an interviewer that is good at listening. This mode of self-inscription characterizes him as an author who is not expressive but who is nonetheless markedly present on the screen. In Um Dia na Vida, however, Coutinho is completely absent form the image, while Últimas Conversas, on the contrary, includes a confessional prologue that moves the director from the margins to the center of his films. This article examines the ways in which these works stand out in the filmography of a director who offers new insights into the notion of cinematic authorship
Appropriate Similarity Measures for Author Cocitation Analysis
We provide a number of new insights into the methodological discussion about author cocitation analysis. We first argue that the use of the Pearson correlation for measuring the similarity between authors’ cocitation profiles is not very satisfactory. We then discuss what kind of similarity measures may be used as an alternative to the Pearson correlation. We consider three similarity measures in particular. One is the well-known cosine. The other two similarity measures have not been used before in the bibliometric literature. Dispelling the Myths Behind First-author Citation Counts
We conducted a full-scale evaluative citation analysis study of scholars in the XML research field to explore just how different from each other author rankings resulting from different citation counting methods actually are, and to demonstrate the capability of emerging data and tools on the Web in supporting more realistic citation counting methods. Our results contest some common arguments for the continued
use of first-author citation counts in the evaluation of scholars, such as high correlations between author rankings by first-author citation counts and other citation
counting methods, and high costs of using more realistic citation counting methods that are not well-supported by the ISI databases.
