Alpine plant species converge towards adopting elevation-specific resource-acquisition strategy in response to experimental early snow-melting
<p>An experimental to assess the effect of early snow-melting on alpine species at contrasting elevation was established in 2019 at Rohtang (32°22' N; 77°16' E) in western Himalaya. After completion of 02 year of experiment, sampling was performed on 08 alpine plant species. We have collected leaf functional trait and physiological traits during peak growing season (August 2020) from two elevation (3850 and 4150 m) and from control and treatment plots. The trait values of 15 replicates for each species were given here for leaf functional traits (viz. leaf area, specific leaf area, leaf dry matter content, leaf water content, plant height) and trait values of 05 replicated for each species were given for elemental (Nitrogen % and carbon/nitrogen ratio ) and physiological traits (leaf chlorophyll content, Carotenoid content, Malondialdehyde equivalents, Phenol content, Proline content, Total soluble Sugar content, Total protein content). Brief Announcement: Agent-Based Leader Election, MST, and Beyond
Leader election is one of the fundamental and well-studied problems in distributed computing. In this paper, we initiate the study of leader election using mobile agents. Suppose n agents are positioned initially arbitrarily on the nodes of an arbitrary, anonymous, n-node, m-edge graph G. The agents relocate themselves autonomously on the nodes of G and elect an agent as a leader such that the leader agent knows it is a leader and the other agents know they are not leaders. The objective is to minimize time and memory requirements. Following the literature, we consider the synchronous setting in which each agent performs its operations synchronously with others and hence the time complexity can be measured in rounds. The quest in this paper is to provide solutions without agents knowing any graph parameter, such as n, a priori. We first establish that, without agents knowing any graph parameter a priori, there exists a deterministic algorithm to elect an agent as a leader in O(m) rounds with O(nlog n) bits at each agent. Using this leader election result, we develop a deterministic algorithm for agents to construct a minimum spanning tree of G in O(m+nlog n) rounds using O(n log n) bits memory at each agent, without agents knowing any graph parameter a priori. Finally, using the same leader election result, we provide improved time/memory results for other fundamental distributed graph problems, namely, gathering, maximal independent set, and minimal dominating sets, removing the assumptions on agents knowing graph parameters a priori
Aprostocetus Westwood 1833
Genus Aprostocetus Westwood Aprostocetus Westwood, 1833: 444. Type species, Aprostocetus caudatus, by monotypy. For more complete lists of synonymies see Graham (1987), Bouček (1988), LaSalle (1994) and Noyes (2019). Aprostocetus is the largest and most diverse genus in the subfamily Tetrastichinae with about 813 described species worldwide (Noyes 2019). Aprostocetus species parasitize a wide variety of hosts, which are often insects inhabiting a variety of plant galls, including Diptera, Hymenoptera, Coleoptera, Coccoidea and even eriophyid mites and nematodes (Graham 1987, La Salle 1994). Species in the genus exhibit extensive biological and morphological diversity (La Salle et al. 2009) and it has therefore been subdivided into six subgenera (Graham 1987, La Salle 1994). Generic keys including Aprostocetus are available for Australasia (Bouček 1988), North America (LaSalle 1994, Schauff et al. 1997), Europe (Graham 1987) and India (Narendran 2007) but keys to species are available only for the European (Graham 1987) and Indian (Narendran 2007) fauna. Both species of Aprostocetus reared from leaf vein galls of M. longifolia are found to be new and described below. Variations in surface ozone at Nainital : a high-altitude site in the central Himalayas
Surface ozone measurements have been made for the first time at Nainital (29.37 degrees N, 79.45 degrees E, 1958 m amsl), a high-altitude site in the central Himalayas, between October 2006 and December 2008. Diurnal variations in ozone do not show the daytime photochemical build-up typical of urban or rural sites. The seasonal variation shows a distinct ozone maximum in late spring (May; 67.2 +/- 14.2 ppbv) with values sometimes exceeding 100 ppbv and a minimum in the summer/monsoon season (August; 24.9 +/- 8.4 ppbv). Springtime ozone values in the central Himalayas are significantly higher than those at another high-altitude site (Mt. Abu) in the western part of India. Seasonal variations in ozone and the processes responsible for the springtime peak are studied using meteorological parameters, insolation, spatial and temporal classifications of air mass trajectories, fire counts, and simulations with a chemical transport model. Net ozone production over the Northern Indian Subcontinent in regionally polluted air masses is estimated to be 3.2 ppbv/day in spring but no clear build-up is seen at other times of year. Annual average ozone values in regionally polluted air masses (47.1 +/- 16.7 ppbv) and on high insolation days (46.8 +/- 17.3 ppbv) are similar. Background ozone levels are estimated to be 30-35 ppbv. Regional pollution is shown to have maximum contribution (16.5 ppbv) to ozone levels during May-June and is about 7 ppbv on an annual basis, while the contribution of long-range transport is greatest during January-March (8-11 ppbv). The modeled stratospheric ozone contribution is 2-16 ppbv. Both the trajectory analysis and the model suggest that the stratospheric contribution is 4-6 ppbv greater than the contribution from regional pollution. Differences in the seasonal variation of ozone over high-altitude sites in the central Himalayas (Nainital) and western India (Mt. Abu) suggest diverse regional emission sources in India and highlight the large spatial and temporal variability in ozone over the Indian region
Quantifying the impact of deployment practices on interplant freight volatility

However, the trucking industry is not ready to take on this growth in volume due to a shortage of truck drivers. From a shipper's perspective, availability of transportation is an important concern that needs to be addressed to ensure customer satisfaction, realize growth and keep costs down. Shippers can enhance their carriers' ability to provide consistent trucking capacity by reducing the variability of freight demand. This thesis creates a simulation model of deployment processes at a consumer packaged goods company to evaluate relationship between transportation variability and various management levers. Through the analysis of the simulation runs, the effects of management levers on the freight volatility are quantified. The findings of the research show that actively limiting the truckloads sent downstream, and thus eliminating the freight volatility through internal policies is a potential solution. The thesis concludes by presenting the benefits and trade-offs of this approach on the logistics costs of the sponsor company. If the company sticks to the current policy of immediate shipment as the need arises, the thesis shows that the best deployment schedule is a bi-weekly one.by Kurn Ma and Manish Kumar.M. Going Beyond Counting First Authors in Author Co-citation Analysis
The present study examines one of the fundamental aspects of author co-citation analysis (ACA) - the way co-citation
counts are defined. Co-citation counting provides the data on which all subsequent statistical analyses and mappings
are based, and we compare ACA results based on two different types of co-citation counting - the traditional type that
only counts the first one among a cited work's authors on the one hand and a non-traditional type that takes into
account the first 5 authors of a cited work on the other hand. Results indicate that the picture produced through this non-traditional author co-citation counting contains more coherent author groups and is therefore considerably clearer. However, this picture represents fewer specialties in the research field being studied than that produced through the traditional first-author co-citation counting when the same number of top-ranked authors is selected and analyzed. Reasons for these effects are discussed
Atomic Reconstruction of Au Thin Films through Interfacial Strains
Interfaces play a critical thermodynamic role in the existence of multilayer systems. Due to its utility in bridging energetic and compositional differences between distinct species, the formation of interfaces inherently creates internal strain towards bulk atoms due to the reorganization needed to accommodate such interface. We report the effect of scaling interfacial stress due to deposition of different adlayers on a host thin metal film. Intrinsic property differences between host and de-posited metal atoms result in varying degree of composition and energy gradient within the interface. Interfacial stress can increase defects in the host leading to; i) energy dissipation and reorganization to minimize surface energy, ii) increased material strength. We infer that dissipation of interfacial stress induces defect migration, hence bulk and surface atomic reconstruction as captured by the surface roughness and grain size reduction coupled with concomitant increase in material strength.This is a manuscript of the article published as Martin, Andrew, Jiahao Chen, Chuanshen Du, Manish Kumar, Ian D. Variations on the Author
“Variations on the Author” discusses two of Eduardo Coutinho’s recent films (Um Dia na Vida, from 2010, and Últimas Conversas, posthumously released in 2015) and their contribution to the general question of documentary authorship. The director’s filmography is characterized by a consistent yet self-effacing form of authorial self-inscription: Coutinho often features as an interviewer that rather than express opinions propels discourses; an interviewer that is good at listening. This mode of self-inscription characterizes him as an author who is not expressive but who is nonetheless markedly present on the screen. In Um Dia na Vida, however, Coutinho is completely absent form the image, while Últimas Conversas, on the contrary, includes a confessional prologue that moves the director from the margins to the center of his films. This article examines the ways in which these works stand out in the filmography of a director who offers new insights into the notion of cinematic authorship
