    NDT has evolved as an essential demand in much modern engineering design in aircraft applications. The performance levels and reliability of the NDE is more important to the end use of the object being inspected. Failure is the primary threat to the integrity, safety and performance of aircraft structure. The aero grade material AA 2014 was taken for this project in the form of plate and welded by Tungsten Inert Gas welding TIG . The following NDT methods was done on this material Penetrant testing for to reveal surface defects, Ultrasonic testing to detect the subsurface and internal defects, X Ray Radiography for internal defects. Apart from conventional methods, remote crack inspection was carried using the Ultrasonic phased array. The results from methods were analysed. The acoustic emission test was conducted for the calibration of equipment for testing of AA 2014 material. Surface defects were detected by penetrant testing and internal defects like inclusions, blow holes, porosity and lack of penetration were detected by both Radiography testing and Ultrasonic tests.     Investigation of groundwater consumption to cope with the inadequate piped water supply in continuous and intermittent supply systems: A case study in Bangalore, India

    [EN] Although the supply of piped water to the Indian cities is increasing, the demand is not always fulfilled. This gap in water demand and supply is usually bridged by using alternate sources of water, mostly groundwater. Bangalore, the capital city of Karnataka, is one of the fastest developing metropolitan cities in India is also facing piped water supply issues. The groundwater is the main source of alternate water supply in the city. In the present study, a District Metered Area (DMA) is selected in the Bangalore South-West division; this DMA has both intermittent and continuous water supply systems. The water distribution network (WDN) of study DMA contains four inlets and three supply zones. The first is a continuous water supply system whereas the second and third are the intermittent systems. The impact of inequitable supply in the study DMA is evaluated and the consumption of groundwater to cope with insufficient water supply is analyzed. The Lorenz Curve and Gini Coefficient are used to assess the inequity in groundwater extraction under intermittent and continuous supply zones. The data from the field flowmeters, consumer meter reading, and door-to-door questionnaire survey are used for the analysis. The questionnaire survey includes RR number, presence of wells/borewells, horsepower (HP) of the pumps used, building type, the number of inhabitants, and the floors in each building. In the continuous supply system, a questionnaire survey was untaken for 80% of the connections, whereas in the intermittent supply system random sampling was used. The questionnaire survey analysis showed that 53% of the consumers in the continuous supply system rely on piped water supply, whereas others used groundwater as well as piped water supply. The study illustrated the gap in groundwater consumption between supply zones within intermittent water supply systems as well as between intermittent and continuous water supply zones. Reliability on groundwater was high even in continuous supply systems indicating insufficient pressures resulting in unsatisfied demands. The study indicated that just increasing the access to the piped water supply to the consumers is not sufficient, the acceptable quality with adequate pressure of water should be delivered to reduce the use of groundwater.     A non-redundant role of complement protein C1q in normal and adverse pregnancy

Complement component 1q (C1q) is the recognition molecule of the classical pathway of the complement system that can bind to an array of closely spaced antigen-bound immunoglobulin G (IgG) and IgM antibodies. In addition to its involvement in defence against a range of pathogens and clearance of apoptotic and necrotic cells, C1q has also been implicated in immune and non-immune homeostasis. C1q is locally produced by immune cells such as monocytes, macrophages, and dendritic cells. C1q is also synthesized by decidual endothelial cells, thus acting as a link between decidual cells and trophoblasts, as well as contributing to the remodelling of spiral arteries. Furthermore, C1q is produced by the extravillous trophoblasts (EVTs) invading the decidua. As a pro-angiogenic molecule, C1q is also important for normal placentation processes as it favors the active angiogenesis in the developing decidua. These observations have been validated by C1q gene knock-out mice which showed pre-eclampsia (PE)-like symptoms, characterized by hypertension, proteinuria, glomerular endotheliosis, and increased soluble fms-like tyrosine kinase-1 (sFlt-1)/placental growth factor (PlGF) ratio, and increased oxidative stress. The role of C1q in normal and adverse human pregnancy is being studied extensively due to its absence or low level as a likely precipitating factor for the development of PE.Funding: Not applicable

    The structure of lobbying and protection in U.S. agriculture

    The author surveys the empirical literature on the political economy of agricultural protection. He uses a detailed data set of agricultural Political Action Committee (PAC) contributions over five U.S. congressional election cycles over the 1991-2000 period to investigate the relationship between lobbying spending and agricultural protection. A detailed graphical analysis of campaign contributions by the agricultural PACs indicates that although there are very many PACs, in most sectors the majority of contributions are made by very few PACs. Econometric analysis reveals that lobbying spending by agricultural PACs is positively associated with the use of nontariff barriers and specific tariffs by the United States. There is a strong association between the average U.S. tariff on goods that benefit from U.S. export subsidies and lobbying spending.     Coagulation Profile in Liver Diseases: A Study of 300 Cases in a Tertiary Care Hospital in Uttarakhand, India

    ABSTRACT Background The liver is the cornerstone of the coagulation system. The physiology of blood coagulation is closely linked to liver function as the liver synthesizes most of the factors of the coagulation cascade and fibrinolytic proteins. Objective The objective of this study was to evaluate coagulation abnormalities associated with chronic liver diseases and determine the coagulation abnormalities using various coagulation studies [prothrombin time (PT), activated partial thromboplastin time (APTT), bleeding time (BT), clotting time (CT), and platelet count]. Materials and methods This study included 300 patients clinically diagnosed with liver disease and who were divided into three categories – cirrhosis, hepatitis, and other liver diseases. The coagulation tests PT, APTT, BT, CT, and platelet count were performed and the results were evaluated in groups. Results Out of the 300 patients, 156 were diagnosed with cirrhosis, 75 were of viral hepatitis, and 69 were of other liver diseases. About 62% (186/300) had prolonged PT. About 39.3% (118/300) had prolonged APTT. The BT was prolonged in 34% (102/300), while CT was prolonged in 10.6% (32/300). Thrombocytopenia was seen in 46% (138/300) patients. Conclusion We concluded that various abnormalities of coagulation tests vary greatly with different liver disorders, duration of the disorders, and their severity. Prolongation of PT and APTT in advancing liver cirrhosis indicates damage to the liver parenchyma resulting in decreased production of coagulation proteins with increased risk of bleeding tendencies, which can be detected before these ensue.     The Effects of Endogenous Protection on the Economic Landscape

    The author studies the impact of political economy variables on the spatial distribution of industry. The political game between a single lobby and a partial opportunistic incumbent may alter the economic landscape of a small economy. The trade policy endogenously determined becomes the channel to understand how the players’ behaviour impacts on the long run spatial distribution of industry. When the rest of the world is a free trader and the spending share of an economy is relatively small, the marginal change in the trade policy has a relevant impact on the industry share. Amazingly, if a small economy is characterised by a government that is not very much concerned about general welfare and there is a lobby of few capital owners that play actively, the possible outcome will be a relocation of industry that favours such an economy. Capital owners might make capital flow to look for protection. Political variables may act as a dispersion force.

    Effectiveness of Life Skills Education (LSE) Training for School Teachers in a Post Disaster Scenario

    Measuring the effectiveness of the training in life skills education imparted to the school teachers in the aftermath of tsunami disaster was the broader aim of the study. Twenty five teachers from St. James High School, Vaniakudy, Government Middle School, Colachel and St. Alex Middle School, Kottilpadu were selected for the training programme with the permission of the Education Department officials at Kanniyakumari District. Profile of the participants was collected using a performa designed for the purpose. Pre-post administration of (1) Knowledge Assessment Scale (Sekar, 2007) and (3) Life Skills - Opinion Questionnaire (Bharat, Kishore Kumar &amp; Vranda, 2005) was done to measure the effectiveness of the training. Results showed a significant knowledge difference (‘t’ value = 26.6, df – 24 ‘p’ &lt;0.001) before and after training, indicating that the training was beneficial for the participants
