    Manifold is an attempt to create a generic UI which would be application-independent, where the UI can be easily “detached” from one application and “attached” to another one. The Model-View-Controller (MVC) design pattern is a popular design pattern used in User Interfaces which has been employed in manifold. In this pattern, a user generates input device events which are interpreted as actions on the domain model via a Controller. After execution of the requested actions, the model sends notifications about the effect of the actions, and the notifications are visualized as feedback to the user. Different applications have different sets of inputs and so the UI should be able to translate a users input on manifold’s workspace to that of the domain model. To solve these issues, the MVC design and the Event Frame concept has been incorporated. The EventFrame conveys user’s intentions (event) in a standardized format to the Controller to be acted up on the domain model. The EventFrame being the only “medium” to communicate to the Controller makes it pivotal in communication between the UI and the domain model. We envision manifold to grow in to a complex application that would cater to various complex domain models on the internet where XML is gaining popularity as a way to share and transport data. In such a situation, the number of messages sent between the manipulator and Controller would be enormous. We felt that in such a situation, the Event Frame would be a bottle neck to performance. Considerable amount of my work in this thesis concerns with re-engineering the Event Frame in order to make it “web friendly”. We eliminated the Hashtable to represent the EventFrame with a comma separated String that would make it easier for the XML parser to parse data. The modifications made to the application and performance enhancements have been described in detail. Property editors are used to edit the properties/attributes of a selected glyph. It exposes the glyph’s properties for editing. Every time a new glyph is selected, the old editors are emptied from the viewer, and the new set of editors are loaded. My work in this thesis describes the implementation of newer property editors incorporated in to the property viewer panel that will provide a user with enhanced options to edit a selected glyph. The newer property editors incorporated are a fill color editor which fills the interior of a glyph with a user specified color and a stroke editor which edits the stroke of a glyphs boundary. Lastly, while the basic feature of being able to draw a glyph and perform actions on them using tools worked, there were certain issues with the property viewer that prevented the properties editors from being displayed in the property viewer pane. My preliminary work was to eliminate these issues.     Intersect a quartic to extract its roots

    In this note we present a new method for determining the roots of a quartic polynomial, wherein the given quartic polynomial is intersected by a quadratic polynomial (which has two unknown coefficients) at its root point; so the root satisfies both the quartic and the quadratic equations. Elimination of the root term from the two equations leads to an expression in the two unknowns of quadratic polynomial. In addition, we introduce another expression in one unknown, which leads to determination of the two unknowns and subsequently the roots of quartic polynomial

    We present a novel decomposition method to decompose an eighth-degree polynomial equation, into its two constituent fourth-degree polynomials, as factors, leading to its solution. The salient feature of the octic equation solved here is that, the sum of its four roots being equal to the sum of the remaining four roots. We derive the condition to be satisfied by coefficients so that the given octic is solvable by the proposed method

    Developing A System For Blind Acoustic Source Localization And Separation

    This dissertation presents innovate methodologies for locating, extracting, and separating multiple incoherent sound sources in three-dimensional (3D) space; and applications of the time reversal (TR) algorithm to pinpoint the hyper active neural activities inside the brain auditory structure that are correlated to the tinnitus pathology. Specifically, an acoustic modeling based method is developed for locating arbitrary and incoherent sound sources in 3D space in real time by using a minimal number of microphones, and the Point Source Separation (PSS) method is developed for extracting target signals from directly measured mixed signals. Combining these two approaches leads to a novel technology known as Blind Sources Localization and Separation (BSLS) that enables one to locate multiple incoherent sound signals in 3D space and separate original individual sources simultaneously, based on the directly measured mixed signals. These technologies have been validated through numerical simulations and experiments conducted in various non-ideal environments where there are non-negligible, unspecified sound reflections and reverberation as well as interferences from random background noise. Another innovation presented in this dissertation is concerned with applications of the TR algorithm to pinpoint the exact locations of hyper-active neurons in the brain auditory structure that are directly correlated to the tinnitus perception. Benchmark tests conducted on normal rats have confirmed the localization results provided by the TR algorithm. Results demonstrate that the spatial resolution of this source localization can be as high as the micrometer level. This high precision localization may lead to a paradigm shift in tinnitus diagnosis, which may in turn produce a more cost-effective treatment for tinnitus than any of the existing ones

    Economic optimality of phosphorus use in cotton production

    This study analyzes the economics of precision farming phosphorus application for cotton production in the Southern High Plains of Texas that is based on management zones delineated using spatial (Exploratory Spatial Data Analysis) statistics and non spatial (Sigma) approaches. Both the precision farming approaches to management zone delineation have been designed to identify relevant patterns of agronomic yield variability in order to adjust phosphorus input application accordingly. The data used to establish management zones is based on 2000 and 2001 crop years agronomic cotton experiments designed to study phosphorus use for cotton production in the Southern High Plains of Texas. A combination of regression, optimization, and simulation modeling tools are then utilized to evaluate the economic impact of precision farming approach (based on the management zones) versus the whole field farming method of using a uniform rate of input application. The research model incorporates the yield variability, output and input price risk for cotton to account for the uncertainty that producers face. Overall, for the year 2000, results suggest that a management zone-based precision farming approach result in higher cotton yields and/or higher risk adjusted profits, on average, relative to conventional whole field farming approach

    Psychological autopsy and necropsy of an unusual case of suicide by intravenous toluene

    Toluene (methylbenzene; volatile hydrocarbon) is an industrial solvent that causes major injury to the lungs; the organ being the first capillary bed encountered. We report an unusual case of suicide by a 24-year-old male, paramedical professional, with fatal outcome within 16 h of intentional, intravenous self-administration of toluene, with clinical presentation of acute respiratory distress syndrome. Psychological autopsy revealed severe depressive disorder and solvent (inhalant) abuse, with marital disharmony as the precipitating stressor for suicide. Necropsy revealed diffuse congestion of internal organs like lungs and liver, epicardial petechial hemorrhages, and gastric hemorrhages. Treatment of toluene poisoning includes supportive care as no specific antidote is available. Early and aggressive management may be conducive to a favorable outcome with minimal residual pulmonary sequelae. Relevant literature of toluene poisoning was identified via PubMed, PubChem, ToxNet, Hazardous Substances Data Bank (HSDB), Embase, and PsycINFO. To our knowledge, this is the first case of suicide by intravenous administration of toluene in the literature
