Bogdan Bogdanović: Dissident in life, architecture and writing

    Get PDF
The paper analyses selected works of Bogdan Bogdanović (1922- 2010). This Serbian architect, writer and Professor of Architecture at the University of Belgrade, was the author of numerous monuments devoted to the victims of fascism in former Yugoslavia (1952-81). As the Mayor of Belgrade (1982-86) Bogdanović was a liberal member of the Yugoslav Communist Party and later, a strong opponent of Milošević’s regime. This paper argues that Bogdanović has always been both a dissident and an avant-garde proponent of architectural surrealism and its wider culture. Living with the belief that the vocation of an architect presupposes lifetime devotion to learning and experimentation, Bogdanović carried on with this attitude throughout his life. This approach, spiced up with playfulness and mystery as presented in his early volume Zaludna mistrija (The Futile Trowel) 1968, is the focus of this paper. In this unusual book the narratives are an intrinsic part of the architectural realm including design, drawings of various kinds, and the built form itself

    No full text
The main goal of the article is to explore relations of literature and architecture in works of Bogdan Bogdanović, the Serbian architect, writer, politician and dissident. The author focuses on surrealist influences that pervade Bogdanović’s work i.e. famous memorials of WWII, sketches, political and architectural essays and autobiographical narratives. Analyzing both aesthetic and ideological aspects of surrealist signatures etched into this ouvre, the author defines them as a subversive strategy aimed against the communist discourse of Yugoslavia as well as against the modernist discourse of postwar architecture

The Role of the Faith in Jesus Christ in the Family Experience of Grief

    No full text
Mourning is the state of grieving the loss of a close relationship. It manifests itself in multi-sided suffering affecting the mourner’s mental, physical and spiritual sphere. A particularly painful form of mourning is the family experience of grief. Although ways of expressing grief depend on the culture, era and intensity of the interpersonal relationships, it is a universal human experience. This paper aims to answer the question about the role of the mourner’s faith in Jesus Christ in the bereaved family experience, as a work in the field of Roman Catholic dogmatic theology. The method used is the analysis of selected material from psychology and Catholic theology (Christology, anthropology, protology, eschatology), in order to synthetically present theological and practical conclusions. The author also quotes mourners’ testimonies. First, the author shows the elements of the psychology of mourning. However, his emphasis is on the next step, i.e., discussing the relationship between the mourner’s faith in Jesus and the family experience of grief. Furthermore, he deals with theories concerning the relationships between the living and the dead, which are contrary to the teachings of the Roman Catholic Church: annihilation, spiritism and reincarnation. Finally, the important role of the faith in Jesus in the mourning process is presented and completed by indicating possible directions for research on this issue

Sociologia proastei guvernări în România interbelică, Editura RAO, București, 2019. Bogdan Bucur: Sociology of Bad Governance in Interwar Romania, RAO Press, Bucharest, 2019, Bogdan Bucur

This review seeks to critically unravel Bogdan Bucur's Sociology of Bad Governance in Interwar Romania by using both an emic and an etic approach. From an emic perspective, that is, from inside the book, Bogdan Bucur's intellectual effort is really impressive. Despite a huge amount of data, Sociology of Bad Governance in Interwar Romania proves itself quite easy to read thanks to a solid organization. Additionally, due to the fact that the author has employed a classic academic recipe, the abovementioned book is also very coherent. However, looked at it etically, the book loses its internal coherence due to some conceptual and methodological blunders. Conceptually, despite the fact that the book brings to the fore the issue of bad governance and that it includes a theoretical chapter, the concept of good governance is left unaddressed. Methodologically, the author seems to have fallen in the trap of methodological nationalism. A consistent liberal and neo-marxist literature has already addressed the state as a historical institution which is more or less dependent on the international milieu. In his attempt to explain the administrative failures of the interwar Romanian state, the author has completely overlooked the path dependence explanation and the impact former empires had had on post-colonial states. Thus, a confusion between causes and manifestations of bad governance has emerged

De arte moriendi Jana Gersona – średniowieczny przeżytek czy dar dla współczesnych? Próba analizy w świetle dokumentu Aktualne problemy eschatologii Międzynarodowej Komisji Teologicznej (1992)

Death is a part of human life – a part which cannot be deleted. Both earlier and nowadays it pushes people to ask about its reason, consequences, nature and how to get ready for it. The response for the ultimate question were books about the art of dying, which first of all were written in the Middle Ages.People are dying also today, so there is a need to work out a “new art of dying”, which is compatible with the mentality of a contemporary human being. The first step is to analyse if and how medieval texts can help or explain it. An analysis in the light of contemporary eschatology of one of such texts: De artre moriendi written by J. Gerson is the point of the following article. The first chapter is about the final things in human life such as death, paradise, purgatory and hell, which are described by Gerson. In the second chapter there is presented the teaching of the International Theological Commission concerning those issues enclosed in the document Some current questions in Eschatology (1992). The third chapter is an attempt to compare the eschatology of both texts. The study allows to draw a conclusion that the medieval treatise of Gerson is not an anachronism, but might be a precious inspiration for contemporary theologians. Eschatology included in that treatise is faithful to contemporary eschatology, so it is possible, after doing some revisions and additions, to build ars moriendi for contemporary human based on it.Śmierć jest elementem ludzkiego życia, którego nie da się usunąć.

It seems that the recent events of the war in Ukraine, the worldwide economic crisis, climate change, and Covid 19 pandemic lead people to see in them the signs of the end of the world. This article is the attempt to consider current events in light of the faith in Christ and analyze the validity of the claim that we are nearing the end of the world. Instrumental in this endeavor will be the eschatology of Hans Urs von Balthasar – after the initial presentation of his view, the author presents Balthasar’s understanding of the end of the world and juxtaposes it with a view of an Italian theologian, Antonio Nitrola, who founds his view on eschatology on Parousia, the second coming of Christ. The article highlights the need of Christian understanding of preparation for death, and describes death as a personal end of the world, inevitable and necessary to be prepared for
