Pardosa fulvipes (Araneae, Lycosidae) new to Slovakia

During the post-colloquium excursion of the 18th European Colloquium of Arachnology in Slovakia in July 1999, I had the opportunity to collect a small material of wolf spiders at the boundary of the Slovak Paradise National Park c. 20 km south of Poprad. Except for two common species [Pardosa palustris (UNNAEUS) and P. pullata (CLERCK)], numerous females of Pardosa fulvipes (COLLETT) were taken. An additional specimen of the latter was captured at Stara Lesna close to the High Tatras National Park. P. fulvipes was not included in the catalogue of spider species recorded from Slovakia (GAJDOS et al. 1999) though it may previously have been overlooked due to misidentification with some other species in the pullata group

First record of Aulonia kratochvili (Araneae, Lycosidae) from Europe

The fauna of wolf spiders is rather well-known in certain parts of the Balkan Peninsula, in others less so. While extensive collecting has been undertaken in Bulgaria (summarized in DEL TSHEV & BLAGOEV 1995), other parts, like Greece, still await to be better explored. During a short visit to Greece in 1995, two of my colleagues at the Swedish Museum of Natural History brought back a small collection of spiders. Among the spiders (captured by trapping) were numerous males of tIycosid Aulonia kratochvili DUNIN, BUCHAR et ABSOLON. This species was recently described from both sexes, collected in Azerbaijan (DUNIN et al. 1986) and also found in Turkmenia (SW Kopetdagh: sub "Aulonia sp.n." in FET 1985; MIKHAILOV 1997). Its occurrence in Greece indicates a Pontomediterranean distribution

Alopecosa virgata (Kishida, 1909) ** Chikuni, 1989: 110, f. 6. Material examined: 7 ♀♀ 1 ♂, Sikhote-Alinsky Reserve, Blagodatnoe Kordon, 44º56'N 136º32.6'E, 7- 12.07.1999, YS; 1 ♀ 8 ♂ ♂, Ussuriysky Reserve, Komarovo-Zapovednoe, 43º39'N 132º20.7'E, 22- 29.07.1999, YS. COMMENTS. The first record in Russia and the westernmost point of distribution. Almost indistinguishable from the circum-Holarctic A.aculeta (Clerck, 1757). Only cover of the cymbium as well as the structure of embolus (visible only in dissected palp) allow to separate these two species. All records of A. aculeata from eastern China probably refer to this species. Similarity of these species was firstly indicated by Torbjorn Kronestedt (personal communication).Published as part of Marusik, Yuri M. & Koponen, Seppo, 2000, New data on spiders (Aranei) from the Maritime Province, Russian Far East, pp. 55-68 in Arthropoda Selecta 9 (1) on page 63, DOI: 10.5281/zenodo.82271

Working from the Outside: Discovering Truth Within a Mask

    No full text
It is the purpose of this thesis to explore the different principles of mask performance in modern theatre and the unique relationship it allows the actor to develop with an audience. The author uses exercises from her training experience with different mask artists such as Teatro Punto, Familie Floz, Torbjorn Alstrom, and Marcello Bartoli. These exercises document a process of training the body in preparation for the mask, how to perform with mask, and how to connect with an audience. The mask is used as a tool to discover an engagement of work that activates both body and imagination of the performer as well as the observer

The Morality of Clinical Research: A Case Study

    No full text
The paper is a record of a debate which took place between a group of clinicians and the author concerning a clinical trial of a drug supposed to postpone the time when HIV-patients develop AIDS. A problem with the trial was that on available (inconclusive) evidence it appeared that one patient out of 500 was killed by the drug. The question raised was whether, in view of this evidence, it was morally defensible to go on with the trial. The discussion came to involve general topics such as the appropriate role of the ideal of autonomy as well as more particular topics of quantitative and qualitative risk assessments. The main thrust of the argument is that different conceptions of rationality may provide rationales of conflicting clinical decisions. Philosophy matters to medicine

Regional crop supply behaviour in the EU

The objective of this paper is to present an evolution of PMP model suitable to estimate the revenue function and to provide price elasticity due to the variation of subsidies at farm level, especially if they are decoupled. This problem arises when individual data of farm households in a given region, coming from FADN, are used for implement PMP models finalized to policy analysis. This paper presents the theoretical background of the proposed innovations and empirical evidence on the basis of a sample of farms included in FADN database in Italy.Bayesian estimation, errors-in-variables, PMP, Crop Production/Industries,

Estimation of supply response in CAPRI

    No full text
The primary objective of this paper is to estimate behavioural parameters of the quadratic regional supply models in the modelling system CAPRI, using the time series data in the CAPRI database. A secondary objective is to replace the constant yields of the original model by functions that depend on input use. Due to lack of statistical robustness, the second objective is not achieved, thus yields remain constant. A Bayesian highest posterior density estimator is developed to address the primary objective. After discarding regions with insufficient data, parameters for up to 23 crop production activities with related inputs, outputs, prices and behavioural functions are estimated for 165 regions in EU-15. The results are systematically compared to the outcomes of other studies. For crop aggregates (e.g. cereals, oilseeds etc.) on the level of nations, the estimated own price elasticities of supply are found to be in a plausible range. On a regional level and for individual crops, the picture is much more diverse. Whether the regional results are plausible or not is difficult to judge, since no other study of similar regional and product coverage is known to the author
