Archive Fellowship for Kerstin von der Krone
Kerstin von der Krone was awarded the The Joseph and Eva R. Dave Fellowship at the The Jacob Rader Marcus Center of the American Jewish Archives in Cincinnati (OH) for the 2017–2018 academic year. This fellowship allows her to broaden her research on nineteenth-century Jewish religious education by including American Jewish approaches to education between 1820 and 1880. Based on this new perspective, she is currently re-framing her research project under the title "Educating the ‘Modern’ Je..

Appropriate Similarity Measures for Author Cocitation Analysis
We provide a number of new insights into the methodological discussion about author cocitation analysis. We first argue that the use of the Pearson correlation for measuring the similarity between authors’ cocitation profiles is not very satisfactory. We then discuss what kind of similarity measures may be used as an alternative to the Pearson correlation. We consider three similarity measures in particular. One is the well-known cosine. The other two similarity measures have not been used before in the bibliometric literature. Finally, we show by means of an example that our findings have a high practical relevance.information science;Pearson correlation;cosine;similarity measure;author cocitation analysis
"Closing the R&D Gap, Evaluating the Sources of R&D Spending"
Both spending and tax policies have been implemented in the United States with the goal of stimulating private sector research and development (R&D). Karier questions whether current R&D policy, especially the research and experimentation tax credit, can contribute to closing the gap between nondefense expenditures on R&D in the United States and such expenditures in other countries, such as Japan and Germany. He also explores possible changes to our current R&D policy to make it more effective.
A newly developed gel centrifugation test for quantification of RBC-bound IgG antibodies and their subclasses IgG1 and IgG3: comparison with flow cytometry
BACKGROUND: Novel gel centrifugation test (GCT) cards were evaluated with respect to their ability to estimate the quantity of IgG on RBCs and the determination of the IgG subclasses IgG1 and IgG3. STUDY DESIGN AND METHODS: In 65 patients with a positive DAT, the amount of IgG-gamma-, IgG1, and IgG3 on RBCs was examined by use of GCT cards and flow cytometry (FC) in parallel. The results were correlated with the presence or absence of hemolysis. In addition, D+ RBCs were studied after sensitization with anti-D sera from 22 alloimmunized pregnant women. RESULTS: The amount of IgG on the RBCs as determined by GCT dilution cards correlated with FC (r = 0.70, p < 0.0001). IgG subclass results as determined by GCT IgG subclass cards were confirmed by FC in 14 cases with an anti-IgG-gamma-chain titer greater than or equal to300, whereas IgG subclass cards were not suitable in cases with anti-IgG-gamma-chain titers less than 300. In 44 patients with 2+ or 3+ DAT in the GCT and anti-IgG-gamma-chain titer less than or equal to30, no hemolysis was observed, whereas hemolysis occurred in 13 of 14 patients with an anti-IgG-gamma-chain titer greater than or equal to300. GCT data obtained by IATs with anti-D sera were concordant with FC results. CONCLUSION: There is a correlation between the amount of RBC-bound IgG and immune hemolysis. The GCT cards that detect the anti-IgG-gamma-chain may be useful to predict hemolysis in patients with a 2+ or 3+ DAT in the GCT. The diagnostic value of GCT cards for IgG subclass testing should be investigated further

Going Beyond Counting First Authors in Author Co-citation Analysis
The present study examines one of the fundamental aspects of author co-citation analysis (ACA) - the way co-citation
counts are defined. Co-citation counting provides the data on which all subsequent statistical analyses and mappings
are based, and we compare ACA results based on two different types of co-citation counting - the traditional type that
only counts the first one among a cited work's authors on the one hand and a non-traditional type that takes into
account the first 5 authors of a cited work on the other hand. Results indicate that the picture produced through this non-traditional author co-citation counting contains more coherent author groups and is therefore considerably clearer. However, this picture represents fewer specialties in the research field being studied than that produced through the traditional first-author co-citation counting when the same number of top-ranked authors is selected and analyzed. Reasons for these effects are discussed
Nonlinearities in Exchange rates: Double EGARCH Threshold Models for Forecasting Volatility
This paper illustrates how to specify and test a Double Threshold EGARCH Model for some important exchange rates. The analysis is monthly and refers to the period 1990.01-2007.06. The procedure involves testing for Threshold effects the residuals of a linear autoregressive model of the exchange rate that is taken as the starting point. If this preliminary testing is favourable to the hypothesis off nonlinearity one then specifies and estimates a threshold model using Tong (1983,1990) algorithm, Tong algorithm allows to specify separately two AR regimes and helps locating both the delay and the parameters of the regimes using a search procedure based on the AIC. Residual for the SETAR model are then further tested for conditional heteroskedasticity. If it is present then a Double symmetric EGARCH is fitted to the data by maximum likelihood. The result is compared with an AR GARCH model both in sample and out of sample to asses whether there is any forecasting superiority of the more complex model. Reported results favour this outcome. In the text of the paper we report explicitly the results for the Japanese yen and the British pound exchange rates vis a vis the US dollar, but the same procedure has been applied to many other exchange rate series with results favourable to the double variance model in more than 50% of the cases. We report the complete results in the appendix. We conclude that the proposed model is both feasible and of wide applicability to the analysis of volatility of exchange rates. We add two provisos: data are monthly and the period of estimation reflects only the most recent experience.non linearity; forecasting volatility; exchange rates

Letter from R. R. Zellick, Assistant Trust Officer at The Anglo California National Bank of San Francisco, to Joseph R. Goodman, regarding property owned by Dave Tatsuno. Zellick mentions a dispute between current tenants and Tatsuno, and that Tatsuno has asked Goodman to help locate trustworthy tenants.Personal correspondence, organizational records, government documents, publications, and other papers created or collected by Joseph R. Goodman documenting the forced removal and incarceration of Japanese Americans during World War II, as well as organized resistance to incarceration. Included in the collection are records of the Japanese Young Men's Christian Association and the Japanese American Citizens' League in San Francisco, including papers of the Japanese YMCA's executive secretary Lincoln Kanai; Sakai family papers; Goodman's correspondence to and from Japanese American incarcerees, organizations opposing forced removal and incarceration of Japanese Americans, the War Relocation Authority, and others; publications, photographs, and ephemera from the Topaz Relocation Center, where Goodman taught high school; War Relocation Authority records and publications; and newspaper clippings, pamphlets, and reports about forced removal and incarceration created by various government, religious, and civic organizations, in California and nationwide
