Phosphorus recovery through struvite precipitation: testing of parameters which enhance phosphorus recovery
Phosphorus is an essential nutrient for growth in all living organisms and is used as fertilizer to maintain food production. Today's recovery of mineral phosphate will lead to a lack of phos-phorus as mineral fertilizer since phosphorus will become more expensive over the time. In-creased awareness that the mineral phosphate is not a renewable resource means that recycling of phosphorus is an important environmental and food safety issue.
In the given thesis, the recovery of phosphorus was carried out by the precipitation of the am-monium-magnesium-phosphate (struvite) complex. The overriding purpose was to determine the optimal parameters for phosphates removal through the struvite precipitation from the re-ject- and sludge- wastewater after the biological treatment from the HIAS sewage plant in Hamar, Norway. Furthermore, the goal was to achieve a struvite with the high nutrients content and use it as a potential fertilizer. To accomplish that goal it was formed hypotheses, made the experiments, analysis, and results.
Based on the theory, three hypotheses were formed, which are focused on varying the parame-ters time, pH and molar ratio of Mg2+: NH4+. Firstly, an increase in pH from 8 to 8.3 should increase phosphorus removal through struvite precipitation. Secondly, the reaction time plays role in phosphorus recovery. Thus, the reaction time in the interval 20 to 60 min should be optimal for struvite formation with the high P-recovery. Thirdly, the molar ratio of Mg2+: NH4+ at 1.2: 10 and 1.5: 10: should cause about 95% of P removal. Finally, the concentration of toxic elements, such as heavy metals, was expected to meet the legislations requirements after the experiments.
To carry out the experiments, two sources of wastewater have been taken from the HIAS, mixed and added the salt of magnesium. The solution has been mixed and centrifuged. Both the liquid part and the sediment (struvite) have been analyzed. The struvite was weighted and analyzed
iv
on the content of elements. The liquid part was analyzed on phosphorus and ammonium recov-ery, turbidity, conductivity and the content of elements.
The results showed the highest phosphorus recovery of 97% was achieved by the Mg2+: NH4+ molar ratio of 1.5:10 and the pH 8.3, which looks like the optimum combination for PO43- re-covery. All the experiments showed the same ammonium recovery, at about 68.5%. 20 min reaction time showed better struvite removal than at 60 min. It was found that, although, the amount of struvite sedimentation was small, the quality of precipitated struvite was high. The struvite contains a very low number of toxic elements, which are less than in the legislations requirements.
The results showed that the Mg2+: NH4+ molar ratio and the pH plays key role in enhancing of phosphorus recovery through struvite precipitation. Moreover, the changing in time also can affect the quality of struvite as a future fertilizer.M-MIN
Sorption and risk of phosphorus leaching in P-enriched soil
High concentrations of phosphorus in agricultural soil has been known as a pollution source for waterbodies since 1960. The aim of this study is to investigate the processes and mechanisms in soil that affect leaching and loss of phosphorus from agricultural areas. The study has been done in collaboration between NIBIO and NMBU. The experimental area where the soil samples were gathered has high P-AL values due to the use of manure in earlier agricultural practices.M-MIN
Nutrient uptake in Triticum aestivum.L through a growing season illuminated with soil and plant analyzes : a greenhouse pot experiment
In this experiment, the AL method and CaCl2 are compared with quarantine and with plant uptake in spring halibut (Triticum aestivum) for Phosphorus (P), Potassium (K) and Magnesium (Mg), in an attempt to find a correlation with buffer nutrition, intensity in the soil and plant uptake during a growing season. Withdrawals were taken at seven different times during the growth period to show plant uptake. Two different sediments were used to differentiate the effect of physical properties in the soil and could represent typical agricultural soil. The experiment was performed in a greenhouse, with three treatments to explain the soil intensity and adsorption in a growing season; complete fertilization and spring halibut, complete fertilizer without spring halibut and untreated soil. The correlation between AL and CaCl2 values from the seven extractions shows that the best to worst R2 in cultivated soil: K-light clay> K-Sandy loam> Mg light clay> Mg-sandy loam> P-sandy loam> P-light clay. The difference between the values in «control fertilizer» and «cultivated soil» in both soil types with both methods may indicate that the change PK and Mg buffer and intensity in the soil over a growing season cannot be due to nutrient uptake in the plant but other processes and microorganisms that bind and use nutrients in the soil that can affect the relationship between method and plant uptake.M-MIN
Phosphorus from sludge : evaluation of organic polymer substitution of metal coagulants on phosphorus availability for plant uptake
Majority of Norwegian wastewater treatment plants utilize chemical treatments such as coagulation to meet high removal standards for phosphorus in wastewater. Up to 85% of the total sludge produced from these plants are supplied to farmers for use for possibility of reuse of nutrients, such as P, in agriculture. A study done by Tore Krogstad found that the plant availability of phosphorus from sludge is greatly reduced along with higher concentrations of metal coagulants. To enable wastewater treatment plants to continue meeting high removal efficiency while providing sludge with better P fertilizing capacity, some researches have suggested the substitution a part of the inorganic coagulants with cationic polymers.
In this study, varying combinations of dose and polymer additions with commonly used coagulants ALS and PAX are evaluated on their effective plant available phosphorus when applied to soil and hydroponics systems as fertilizer. Despite improving removal of total phosphorus from wastewater, the simultaneous addition of cationic polyacrylamide to metal salts in coagulation reduced dry mass harvest, most particularly from ALS, with yield reduction documented from 57.5% to 66.1%. Addition of polymers to PAX had a smaller harvest drop ranging from 0.8% to 27%. As compared to mineral fertilizers, nutrient use efficiencies at input P concentration of 6 kg P/daa of the different sludge types were all under 40%, going as low as 6% for ALS + polymer sludge.
Reduction of the yield could be attributed to residual positive charge from the polymer used in the sludge could that may have fixed negatively charged phosphates in the soil, the phytotoxic effect cationic polymers or the mobilization of Al in soil for plant uptake. Further studies are needed to point out the actual mechanism by which the positively-charged polymers inhibit plant growth.
Use of hydroponic growth systems generally reflected soil conditions in terms of plant mass harvest in response to the different sludge types. Yet, evaluations through soil growth were found necessary to address soil interactions not simulated in the hydroponics system such as effect on nutrient uptake
Improvement of Plant Available Phosphorus in Chemically Treated Sludge with Economic Considerations
According to several sources, such as Cordell et al. (2009), a phosphorus-peak will occur within the next 30 years, and the reserves of phosphate rock will run dry, probably during the next century. It is therefore important to explore other phosphorous sources, and sludge from wastewater treatment plants may be an option as it contains all the necessary nutrients that is needed in agriculture.
The fertilizing effect of 8 different types of aluminium based sludge was investigated in a pot experiment to see how the yield differs when different types of sludge is added as fertilizer. And also to see whether polymers contribute to a higher fraction of plant available phosphorous in the sludge. Seeds of rye grass were added to the sludge which then was sown in either vermiculite or peat soil. The sludge was chemically precipitation using two different doses of the coagulants, AlS (aluminium sulphate) and PAX18 (prepolymerized aluminium hydroxyl chloride) and one polymer. The experiment was conducted at the centre for plant research in controlled climate (SKP) for 4 months, during which the plants was harvested 3 times and the dry weight were measured and the content of nutrients was analysed.
The results varied from harvest to harvest and also between different the types of sludge. Due to misjudgements during the experiment, the results from the plants grown in the vermiculite was not comparable to the results from the plants grown in peat soil, and therefore the conclusion in this thesis is based in the results from the plants grown in peat soil. Total absorbed phosphorous showed that AlS dose 1 (the lowest of two doses) was the sludge-combination that gave the best yield, but still it was nowhere close to the results from the plants grown with mineral fertilizer. The adding of polymers to the sludge inhibited the growth of the plants. The reason why is unclear and so further experiments should be conducted.
Due to the scepticism of the use of sludge in agriculture, most of the wastewater treatment plants in Norway have to cover most of the cost of sludge disposal. Two scenarios, one for the present situation and one for the future, were investigated. The costs of alternative sludge disposal methods were investigated in the first scenario. It was concluded that in order to minimize the costs, agriculture was the best alternative. The future scenario concludes that demand of sludge will increase in the future if the phosphate rock reserves are depleted, since the price of phosphate rock will increase as the access decreases.M-V

Transportation of Agricultural Soil as a method for Sustaining Production in Agricultural Areas after Anthropogenic Encroachment - a Survey of transported agricultural soil in Nedre Eiker
The expansion of urban areas, with the associated building of infrastructure, has often led to loss of agricultural land in Norway. It has been proposed that by transporting soil, and reconstruct it as agricultural soil at new locations, one could limit the loss of high quality soil in these areas. Meanwhile, questions are raised regarding the lack of good reference examples and knowledge about the method. In Nedre Eiker the method was used as part of a road cut construction work in 1981, and resulted in two new areas with arable land. This thesis aims to conduct a survey to follow up these two land areas, by studying soil profiles as well as analysing soil samples and yields. For comparison, the same investigations were carried out for natural soils in adjoining areas.
The main difference between the natural soil and the transported and constructed soil and was the construction of the subsoil. While natural soils were characterized by a horizontal stratification within the profile, this was not the case in the areas with constructed soil. In these areas, the soil in the C-horizon had a lack of stratification and an apparently random alignment. By describing two profiles of constructed soils at Elvesletta, a great variation within the constructed area was also discovered. Fluctuations in ground water level, caused by the flooding of the nearby river, at this location usually lead to a fully saturated soil every spring. The silty soil types cause high moisture content, and combined with a poor drainage, the risk of soil compaction is high. In spite of this the yield levels at Elvesletta were normal.
At Steinberghaugen the constructed subsoil had slightly lower water holding capacity as well as somewhat poorer drainage, as compared to the natural soil. The yield was also significantly lower. Still, the yields are considerable larger than the average yields in Buskerud county from previous years (2004 – 2014), both for constructed and natural soils at Steinberghaugen.M-MIN
