Grass-Roots Post-conflict Peacebuilding: A Case Study of Mosintuwu Women’s School in Poso District, Central Sulawesi, Indonesia
Many works of conflict resolution and peacebuilding focus on the Government or top-level leadership efforts. However, peace efforts require a comprehensive approach that is simultaneously conducted at the grass-roots level. This study examined a case study of a grass-roots peacebuilding movement in a post-conflict society, in the Poso District, where a communal conflict occurred (1998–2001). The Mosintuwu Women’s School, scattered in fourteen sub-districts and forty-two villages of the Poso District, in the Central Sulawesi Province, Indonesia, implemented the peace education, trauma healing, and social training for grass-roots women. This study aims to explore the contribution of this Women’s School and the participation of grass-roots women in peacebuilding. The theories used in this study are grass-roots peacebuilding, women in peacebuilding, and peace education. This study is a case study with a qualitative approach. The sources of data are from qualitative interviews, observation, and documents. The study proves that grass-roots movements are essential to peacebuilding efforts because of their contribution to creating sustainable peace, restoring social conditions, implementing peace treaties, disseminating peace issues, establishing a culture of peace, teaching the understanding of conflict and peace, and facilitating societal independence. The study also proves that grass-roots women play a critical role in peacebuilding because they prioritise transformation, female empowerment, healing and forgiveness, and also uphold gender justice and equality. The suggestion put forward is that the Government should integrate grass-roots movements as a part of peacebuilding efforts
Politicization of Identity in Local Election As A Soft Security Threat: A Case of 2017 Jakarta Gubernatorial Election
The background of this study is the DKI Jakarta 2017 local election, which was followed by a series of demonstration and identity politicization against the prospective candidate from minority groups. A similar pattern had been applied in 2018 local election and 2019 national election where SARA (shortened from Suku, Agama, Ras, dan Antar golongan or ethnicity, religion, race, and intergroup relations) is used to mobilize voters through black and negative campaigns. This study aims to explore how the politicization of identity in the DKI Jakarta Gubernatorial Election 2017 can be a soft security threat to human and societal security. By conducting literature studies to related documents, the authors conclude that what happened in DKI Jakarta is categorized as politicized collective identity. The results of the study describe that politicization of identity could cause three effects that can threaten security, namely (1) increasing negative sentiment towards minority groups; (2) increasing the number of cases of persecution and discrimination in the name of religion or ethnicity; and (3) causing community polarization on social media. The study recommends to the government to strengthen national identity, which involves all components of the state and society so that the issue of identity will not be shifted for negative connotation of short-term electoral agenda

Holocene sediment distribution in the Al Wajh platform lagoon (northern Red Sea, Saudi Arabia), a modern analogue for large rift basin carbonate platforms
Sedimentary patterns and hydrodynamic transport processes on modern carbonate platforms in arid climates are understudied compared to platforms in humid-tropical climates. The Al Wajh platform – located in the Arabian–African desert belt – is a large land-attached carbonate platform in the Red Sea providing an excellent opportunity to fill this gap. The platform covers some 1800 km² and is almost completely enclosed by a 115 km long reef-shoal belt. More than 200 sediment surface samples were analyzed in order to investigate the lateral sediment distribution within the lagoon. The seafloor map was refined integrating sample depths with previous published bathymetric information. Conductivity and temperature profiles were measured to study the lagoonal water body. The lagoon is dominated by poorly sorted, sand-sized sediments with low total organic carbon content, while carbonate fines content shows significant lateral variation. Aragonite dominates sediment mineralogy with high-Mg calcite and low-Mg calcite being significant admixtures. Fine-grained siliciclastics are found across the entire lagoon, with angular quartz locally enriched in near-shore and distal areas. Seven component assemblages are defined ranging from benthic foraminifera and mollusc-rich to reef debris-rich component assemblages. Platform-interior ooids are for the first time documented from the modern Red Sea. The heterogeneous distribution of carbonate fines shows no water depth related trends, while the component assemblage arrangement is depth related. Hydrodynamics are interpreted to be the main mechanism controlling carbonate fines distribution in the lagoon. A near-shore enrichment of angular sand-sized quartz suggests influx through wadis during flash floods, while an almost even distribution of fine-grained siliciclastics possibly indicate aeolian import. These findings provide new insights to the importance of hydrodynamic transport processes for sediment distribution in a land-attached platform lagoons in an arid climate. Finally, this study presents a comparison with other modern platforms and discusses implications for improving strategies of hydrocarbon field development in rift-basin carbonates.M.
