    Going Beyond Counting First Authors in Author Co-citation Analysis

    The present study examines one of the fundamental aspects of author co-citation analysis (ACA) - the way co-citation counts are defined. Co-citation counting provides the data on which all subsequent statistical analyses and mappings are based, and we compare ACA results based on two different types of co-citation counting - the traditional type that only counts the first one among a cited work's authors on the one hand and a non-traditional type that takes into account the first 5 authors of a cited work on the other hand. Results indicate that the picture produced through this non-traditional author co-citation counting contains more coherent author groups and is therefore considerably clearer. However, this picture represents fewer specialties in the research field being studied than that produced through the traditional first-author co-citation counting when the same number of top-ranked authors is selected and analyzed.     Variations on the Author

    “Variations on the Author” discusses two of Eduardo Coutinho’s recent films (Um Dia na Vida, from 2010, and Últimas Conversas, posthumously released in 2015) and their contribution to the general question of documentary authorship. The director’s filmography is characterized by a consistent yet self-effacing form of authorial self-inscription: Coutinho often features as an interviewer that rather than express opinions propels discourses; an interviewer that is good at listening. This mode of self-inscription characterizes him as an author who is not expressive but who is nonetheless markedly present on the screen. In Um Dia na Vida, however, Coutinho is completely absent form the image, while Últimas Conversas, on the contrary, includes a confessional prologue that moves the director from the margins to the center of his films. This article examines the ways in which these works stand out in the filmography of a director who offers new insights into the notion of cinematic authorship

    Appropriate Similarity Measures for Author Cocitation Analysis

    We provide a number of new insights into the methodological discussion about author cocitation analysis. We first argue that the use of the Pearson correlation for measuring the similarity between authors’ cocitation profiles is not very satisfactory. We then discuss what kind of similarity measures may be used as an alternative to the Pearson correlation. We consider three similarity measures in particular. One is the well-known cosine. The other two similarity measures have not been used before in the bibliometric literature.     Dispelling the Myths Behind First-author Citation Counts

    We conducted a full-scale evaluative citation analysis study of scholars in the XML research field to explore just how different from each other author rankings resulting from different citation counting methods actually are, and to demonstrate the capability of emerging data and tools on the Web in supporting more realistic citation counting methods. Our results contest some common arguments for the continued use of first-author citation counts in the evaluation of scholars, such as high correlations between author rankings by first-author citation counts and other citation counting methods, and high costs of using more realistic citation counting methods that are not well-supported by the ISI databases. It is argued that increasingly available digital full text research papers make it possible for citation analysis studies to go beyond what the ISI databases have directly supported and to employ more sophisticated methods

    We have done our best to complete the author checklist relating to the use of animals in the hut study. Note that the objective for the hut study was to evaluate the IRS treatment applications for residual efficacy against Anopheles mosquitoes, including the local An. coluzzii mosquito population. Cows were only used to attract mosquitoes into the huts and no tests were carried out directly on the cows. The author checklist is intended for use with studies where experiments are carried out on animals, which is why we have had such difficulty in completing this for the hut study, as many of the questions do not relate to how the cows were used

    Recent advances in internet of things (IoT) infrastructures for building energy systems: A review

    This paper summarises a literature review on the applications of Internet of Things (IoT) with the aim of enhancing building energy use and reducing greenhouse gas emissions (GHGs). A detailed assessment of contemporary practical reviews and works was conducted to understand how different IoT systems and technologies are being developed to increase energy efficiencies in both residential and commercial buildings. Most of the reviewed works were invariably related to the dilemma of efficient heating systems in buildings. Several features of the central components of IoT, namely, the hardware and software needed for building controls, are analysed. Common design factors across the many IoT systems comprise the selection of sensors and actuators and their powering techniques, control strategies for collecting information and activating appliances, monitoring of actual data to forecast prospect energy consumption and communication methods amongst IoT components. Some building energy applications using IoT are provided. It was found that each application presented has the potential for significant energy reduction and user comfort improvement. This is confirmed in two case studies summarised, which report the energy savings resulting from implementing IoT systems. Results revealed that a few elements are user-specific then need all be considered in the decision processes. Last, based on the studies reviewed, a few aspects of prospective research were recommended

    Internet of Things for Power and Energy Systems Applications in Buildings: An Overview

    This paper highlights state-of-the-art technologies, collectively described as Internet of Things (IoT) to improve energy efficiency in residential and commercial buildings. An appraisal of numerous studies on the subject was carried out to better understand the methods through which IoT systems are being currently deployed to improve energy efficiency in buildings, and further technological enhancements that are needed to accelerate these efficiency gains. Many of the present IoT studies have been focused on one specific problem, inefficient heating systems in buildings. Core IoT elements, such as the hardware components and management control software are usually discussed to some degree in most of the research studies. Although the types of applications varied per study, similar design patterns were observed. Some of the major design commonalities are: the choice of options for powering sensors and actuators; control methods for collecting data and controlling devices; historical data acquisition as a base to forecast ahead energy usage; and the methods by which IoT elements interact with one another. The research indicates that while similarities exist among different IoT systems, any chosen system design must be largely specific to its application. Factors such as the number of sensors used, the number of actuated devices, the optimal control method, and personal security of the end-user are application-dependent and must all be considered. Future research directions should examine optimal methods of providing remote power to devices, decipher strategies to keep isolated IoT networks secure, maintain a balance between meeting user comfort requirements and allowing a system to remain relatively autonomous, and optimize system performance in the context of the above requirements and constraints

    This paper discusses a revolutionary system of interrelated computing devices and technologies known as the Internet of Things (IoT), with the objective of improving energy efficiency for both residential and commercial buildings. A thorough review of a profusion of empirical surveys and studies was carried out to fully comprehend the use of IoT to improve energy efficiency in buildings. The present study also examines methods by which these technologies can be further enhanced to provide solutions that are more requisite. Most of the studies reviewed discuss the applicability of various aspects of IoT to a specific application, and were invariably concerned with the problem of efficient heating systems in buildings. Some aspects of the core elements of IoT, such as the hardware and software required for control are analyzed in all the studies reviewed. Although the kind of application in each study is different, similar patterns are discernible in their design factors. Some common design factors include: the choice of sensors and actuators and their powering methods; control strategies for gathering data and actuating devices; collection of historical data to predict future energy use; and interaction approaches between IoT elements. Results showed that certain variables are application-specific and must all be factored into the decisions. Finally, from the studies surveyed, some areas of future research were recommended
