The software must be loaded into antenna-equipped miniature computing nodes to control a citywide network of 105 manhole-mounted sensors and ""smart valves."" The system is designed to automatically hold back the flow of rainwater and sewage in existing sewer system pipes and retention basins until the storm has passed. The stored water would then be released in a controlled manner for subsequent treatment by the city's wastewater treatment plant

    Novel Battery-Less Wireless Sensors for Traffic Flow Measurement

    This project presents a novel battery-less wireless sensor that can be embedded in the road and used to measure traffic flow rate, speed and approximate vehicle weight. Compared to existing inductive loop based traffic sensors, the new sensor is expected to provide increased reliability, easy installation and low maintenance costs. The sensor uses power only for wireless transmission and has ZERO idle power loss. Hence the sensor is expected to be extremely energy efficient. Energy to power this sensor is harvested entirely from the short duration vibrations that results when an automobile passes over the sensor. A significant portion of the project focuses on developing low power control algorithms that can harvest energy efficiently from the short duration vibrations that result when a vehicle passes over the sensor. To this effect this report develops and compares three control algorithms “Fixed threshold switching”, “Maximum Voltage switching” and “Switched Inductor” for maximizing this harvested energy. The novel “Switched inductor” algorithm with a dual switch control configuration is shown to be the most effective at maximizing harvested energy. All three of the developed control algorithms can be implemented using simple low power analog circuit components. The developed sensor is evaluated using a number of experimental tests. Experimental results show that the sensor is able to harvest adequate energy for its operation from the passing of every axle over the sensor.     Enhancement and Field Test Evaluation of New Battery-Less Wireless Traffic Sensors

    This project focused on the enhancement of a previous battery-less wireless traffic flow sensor so as to enable it to provide weigh-in-motion (WIM) measurements and provide enhanced telemetry distance. The sensor consists of a 6-feet-long device which is embedded in a slot in the road flush with the pavement. As a vehicle travels over the sensor, vibrations are induced in the sensor. Using piezoelectric elements, energy is harvested from the vibrations and used to power the electronics in the sensor for signal measurements and wireless transmission. The sensor's performance was evaluated by embedding it in a slot in concrete pavement and driving various vehicles of known weight over it at a number of different speeds on different days. The sensor was found to meet the specification of 500 feet telemetry distance. It was able to provide WIM measurements with an accuracy of better than ±15% in the absence of vehicle suspension vibrations. However, much of the WIM data during the latter period of sensor testing was obtained in the presence of significant suspension vibrations.     Assessment and Prevention Of Falls In Elderly: Nurses’ Role

    Falls in elderlies has been a major concern in geriatric care. One out of three elderlies have been falling every year and the many more elderlies are constantly at risk of falls. These falls lead to serious injuries like hip fractures and build sense of fear in elderlies, which limit their activities and degrade their quality of life. There has been seen a huge need to enhance the skill and knowledge of the present and future nurses to ensure that they are professionally and personally capable to identify the risk factors and plan prevention strategies accordingly. Literature review has been used in this thesis to find out the possible assessment methods to assess the risk factors of falls in elderly, the vulnerable groups of elderlies who have higher chances of falling. In addition, the possible falls prevention strategies have been studied and laid out in this thesis. A total of 11 relevant articles were obtained from a reliable database search. The contents of the thesis have been categorized into distinct assessment and prevention headings for ease of reading and finding required information. In the conclusion end, the author has presented his own ideas and discussed the additional need for safety of elderlies

    Influence of fracture orientation distribution function on the estimates of gas-hydrate saturation of site 10 at Krishna-Godavari Basin, India

    We estimate the gas-hydrate saturation in fractured reservoirs of gas hydrate-rich marine sediments from Krishna-Godavari basin along the eastern margin of India. Effective medium modeling (EMM) is a combination of self-consistent approximation (SCA), differential effective medium (DEM) modeling and smoothing and it deals with the anisotropy associated with clay platelets’ orientation. It proves to be a good choice attributable to its dependency on physical parameters alone. Previous approaches appertain to the implementation of orientation distribution function (ODF) on clay platelets alone assuming a vertical ellipsoidal shape of gas hydrates whilst in the present study, we have implemented ODF on hydrate bearing fractures assigning an ellipsoidal shape to them as well. A bias of ~2-4% in the saturation estimates apparently streamlines the betterness of our method

    ABSTRACTObjective: The aim of the present study was to isolate, identify, and analyze the taxonomic characteristics of the potent actinobacterial strains VJSY-2and VJSY-3 isolated from mangrove soils of Gilakaladindi, Machilipatnam, Krishna District of Andhra Pradesh.Methods: Soil samples pretreated with calcium carbonate were used for isolation of potent actinobacterial strains. Identification of the strains wascarried out by studying the cultural, morphological, biochemical, and physiological characteristics. The phylogenetic study of the strains was carriedout by employing 16S r DNA sequence-based analysis. Phylogenetic tree was constructed using the molecular evolutionary genetic analysis softwareversion 6.Results: Based on the polyphasic taxonomic studies, the potent strains belong to Streptomyces genus. The bioactive metabolites produced by the strainswere active against Gram-positive bacteria (Staphylococcus aureus, Bacillus subtilis, and Bacillus megaterium), Gram-negative bacteria (Xanthomonascampestris, Pseudomonas aeruginosa, and Escherichia coli), and fungi (Aspergillus niger, Fusarium solani, Fusarium oxysporum, and Candida albicans).Conclusion: The results of the experiment showed that the crude ethyl acetate extract of the strains VJSY-2 and VJSY-3 showed significant antimicrobialpotential; hence, they can be used for isolation of compounds with pharmaceutical importance.Keywords: Mangrove Actinobacteria, Streptomyces, Bioactive metabolites.</jats:p
