    Going Beyond Counting First Authors in Author Co-citation Analysis

    The present study examines one of the fundamental aspects of author co-citation analysis (ACA) - the way co-citation counts are defined. Co-citation counting provides the data on which all subsequent statistical analyses and mappings are based, and we compare ACA results based on two different types of co-citation counting - the traditional type that only counts the first one among a cited work's authors on the one hand and a non-traditional type that takes into account the first 5 authors of a cited work on the other hand. Results indicate that the picture produced through this non-traditional author co-citation counting contains more coherent author groups and is therefore considerably clearer. However, this picture represents fewer specialties in the research field being studied than that produced through the traditional first-author co-citation counting when the same number of top-ranked authors is selected and analyzed.     Variations on the Author

    “Variations on the Author” discusses two of Eduardo Coutinho’s recent films (Um Dia na Vida, from 2010, and Últimas Conversas, posthumously released in 2015) and their contribution to the general question of documentary authorship. The director’s filmography is characterized by a consistent yet self-effacing form of authorial self-inscription: Coutinho often features as an interviewer that rather than express opinions propels discourses; an interviewer that is good at listening. This mode of self-inscription characterizes him as an author who is not expressive but who is nonetheless markedly present on the screen. In Um Dia na Vida, however, Coutinho is completely absent form the image, while Últimas Conversas, on the contrary, includes a confessional prologue that moves the director from the margins to the center of his films. This article examines the ways in which these works stand out in the filmography of a director who offers new insights into the notion of cinematic authorship

    Appropriate Similarity Measures for Author Cocitation Analysis

    We provide a number of new insights into the methodological discussion about author cocitation analysis. We first argue that the use of the Pearson correlation for measuring the similarity between authors’ cocitation profiles is not very satisfactory. We then discuss what kind of similarity measures may be used as an alternative to the Pearson correlation. We consider three similarity measures in particular. One is the well-known cosine. The other two similarity measures have not been used before in the bibliometric literature.     Dispelling the Myths Behind First-author Citation Counts

    We conducted a full-scale evaluative citation analysis study of scholars in the XML research field to explore just how different from each other author rankings resulting from different citation counting methods actually are, and to demonstrate the capability of emerging data and tools on the Web in supporting more realistic citation counting methods. Our results contest some common arguments for the continued use of first-author citation counts in the evaluation of scholars, such as high correlations between author rankings by first-author citation counts and other citation counting methods, and high costs of using more realistic citation counting methods that are not well-supported by the ISI databases. It is argued that increasingly available digital full text research papers make it possible for citation analysis studies to go beyond what the ISI databases have directly supported and to employ more sophisticated methods

    Wirkung genetischer und pharmakologischer Modulation der Actinpolymerisation auf die Dopamin- und Glutamat-Freisetzung im Striatum der Maus

    Störungen von striatalen Neuronen oder von Projektionen auf striatale Neurone führen zu Krankheitsbildern wie z.B. M. Parkinson und Chorea Huntington. Um die Ätiologie und Pathogenese solcher Störungen oder potentielle Therapien zu untersuchen, werden in der Grundlagenforschung seit ca. 10 Jahren genetisch veränderte Mäuse verwendet. In dieser Arbeit wurde deshalb eine Technik etabliert, mit der einzelne Striatumregionen der Maus (1,0 x 0,3 mm; Durchmesser x Dicke) in vitro funktionell, d.h. durch Quantifizierung der Dopamin- und Glutamatfreisetzung, aber (am gleichen Präparat) auch molekularbiologisch oder histologisch untersucht werden können, was eine spezifischere Aussage erlaubt als das Homogenat des gesamten Striatums. Als Anwendung der entwickelten Methode wurde die Wirkung von Actincytoskelettveränderungen auf die Ca2+-abhängige Neurotransmitterfreisetzung im caudaten Putamen der Maus untersucht. Diese Veränderungen wurden pharmakologisch durch das Pilzgift Cytochalasin D (-> weniger Actinfilamente) oder genetisch durch knockout des Gelsolingens bei Mäusen (-> mehr Actinfilamente) erreicht. Die Dopamin-Freisetzung im caudaten Putamen wurde in drei coronaren Schnittebenen rostral von Bregma sowie innerhalb dieser Schnittebenen dorsomedial, lateral und ventromedial untersucht. In den drei coronaren Schnittebenen stieg die durchschnittliche NMDA-induzierte Dopamin-Freisetzung von rostral nach caudal um 37% an. Auch in den drei Regionen innerhalb einer Schnittebene stieg die NMDA-induzierte Dopamin-Freisetzung von dorsolateral nach ventromedial um 186% an. Cytochalasin D führt über die Reduktion der Actinfilamente zu einer reduzierten NMDA-induzierten Dopaminfreisetzung. Die Abwesenheit von Gelsolin (Gsn), das Actinfilamente zerteilt, führt über die Akkumulation von Actinfilamenten schließlich zu einer erhöhten Dopamin-Freisetzung. Dies wurde durch vergleichende Untersuchungen an Striatumpräparaten von Gsn-/- und Gsn+/+ Mäusen gezeigt. Hintergrund dieser Effekte ist, daß NMDA- und spannungsabhängige Ca2+-Kanäle an Actinfilamente gekoppelt sind und bei Entkopplung durch Actinfilamentdepolymerisation ihre Leitfähigkeit weitgehend verlieren. Mit der etablierten Microdissektionstechnik am Mausgehirn und in vitro Transmitterfreisetzung können also gezielt und reproduzierbar ca. 0,25 mm3 große Regionen im Striatum der Maus funktionell auf ihre Dopamin- und Glutamatfreisetzung untersucht werden, wobei das Hirngewebe anschließend immer noch für molekularbiologische Zwecke zur Verfügung steht. Das Verfahren gestattet auch die Gewebeanalyse lokal begrenzter Schadensparadigmen wie fokaler Hirninfarktmodelle oder intrastriataler Toxininjektionen

    We have done our best to complete the author checklist relating to the use of animals in the hut study. Note that the objective for the hut study was to evaluate the IRS treatment applications for residual efficacy against Anopheles mosquitoes, including the local An. coluzzii mosquito population. Cows were only used to attract mosquitoes into the huts and no tests were carried out directly on the cows. The author checklist is intended for use with studies where experiments are carried out on animals, which is why we have had such difficulty in completing this for the hut study, as many of the questions do not relate to how the cows were used

    Gelsolin und Gelsolinspaltprodukte im Plasma von Patienten nach kardiopulmonaler Reanimation bei Myokardinfarkt

    Gelsolin ist ein Protein, das sowohl zytosolisch als auch im Plasma vorkommt. Hauptaufgabe des zytosolischen Gelsolins ist die Spaltung von Aktinfilamenten und die Kontrolle der Polymerisationsdynamik von Aktin. Die vorliegende Arbeit beschäftigte sich mit Gelsolin im Plasma als Teil des Extracellular Actin Scavenging System. In dieser Aufgabe ist es für die Elimination von Aktin aus der Blutbahn mitverantwortlich. Wie andere Arbeiten zeigen konnten, sinkt bei ausgedehnten Zelluntergängen und Auftreten von Aktin in der Blutbahn der Gelsolinspiegel im Plasma. Dies konnte unter anderem bei Patienten mit Gram-negativer Sepsis, Myonekrose, akutem Leberversagen und polytraumatisierten Patienten nachgewiesen werden. Die vorliegende Arbeit über den 48-stündigen Verlauf des Gelsolinspiegels im Plasma bei Patienten mit Zustand nach kardiopulmonaler Reanimation bei Myokardinfarkt konnte die oben genannten Ergebnissen nicht bestätigen. Es konnten keine Veränderungen im Gelsolinspiegel des Plasmas von Patienten nach Reanimation festgestellt werden. Als Begründung hierfür ist denkbar, dass durch den massiven Zelluntergang im Rahmen des Herz-Kreislauf-Stillstandes und Myokardinfarktes der Verbrauch des plasmatischen Gelsolins durch den vermehrten Austritt von zytosolischem Gelsolin aus Skelettmuskelgewebe kompensiert wird. Darüber hinaus ist denkbar, dass ein Abfall des Gelsolinspiegels durch die Infusionstherapie vorgetäuscht wird, der methodenbedingt in anderen Arbeiten nicht korrigiert wurde. Zweitens befasste sich diese Arbeit mit der Frage der Aussagekraft des Gelsolinspiegels von Patienten nach kardiopulmonaler Reanimation bei Myokardinfarkt als möglichem prädiktivem Parameter zur Abschätzung der Prognose von Überleben oder Entwicklung von Komplikationen. Die Ergebnisse dieser Arbeit zeigen aber, dass sich der Plasmagelsolinspiegel zumindest bei den untersuchten Patienten nicht als prognostischer Faktor verwenden lässt. Diese Arbeit beschäftigte sich drittens mit der Frage, ob ein Absinken des Gelsolinspiegels neben der Elimination von Gelsolin-Aktin-Komplexen aus der Blutbahn auch durch vermehrte Spaltung von Gelsolin entsteht. Es konnte aber keine Zunahme der Spaltprodukte des Gelsolins innerhalb von 48 Stunden nach kardiopulmonaler Reanimation nachgewiesen werden
