The Bergman kernel and projection on non-smooth worm domains

No full text
We study the Bergman kernel and projection on the worm domains D β = {ζ ∈ C2 : Re (ζ 1e-i log|ζ2|2) > 0, | log |ζ 2|2| π. These two domains are biholomorphically equivalent via the mapping D′β ∋ (z1, z2) → (ez1, z2) ∋ Dβ. We calculate the kernels explicitly, up to an error term that can be controlled. As a result, we can determine the Lp-mapping properties of the Bergman projections on these worm domains. Denote by P the Bergman projection on Dβ and by P′ the one on D′β. We calculate the sharp range of p for which the Bergman projection is bounded on Lp. More precisely we show that P′ : LP(D′β) → LP (D′β) boundedly when 1 < p < ∞, while P : Lp(Dβ) → LP(D β) if and only if 2/(1 + vβ) < p < 2/(1 - vβ), where vβ = π/(2β - π). Along the way, we give a new proof of the failure of Condition R on these worms. Finally, we are able to show that the singularities of the Bergman kernel on the boundary are not contained in the boundary diagonal

In this paper we establish an optimal Lorentz estimate for the Riesz potential in the L1 regime in the setting of a stratified group G: Let Q >= 2 be the homogeneous dimension of G and Ia denote the Riesz potential of order a on G. Then, for every alpha is an element of (0, Q), there exists a constant C = C(alpha, Q) > 0 such that parallel to I(alpha)f parallel to L-Q/(Q-alpha),L-1(G) <= C parallel to XI(1)f parallel to(L1(G)) (0.1) for all f is an element of C-c(infinity) (G) such that XI(1)f is an element of L-1(G), where X denotes the horizontal gradient

Going Beyond Counting First Authors in Author Co-citation Analysis

No full text
The present study examines one of the fundamental aspects of author co-citation analysis (ACA) - the way co-citation counts are defined. Co-citation counting provides the data on which all subsequent statistical analyses and mappings are based, and we compare ACA results based on two different types of co-citation counting - the traditional type that only counts the first one among a cited work's authors on the one hand and a non-traditional type that takes into account the first 5 authors of a cited work on the other hand. Results indicate that the picture produced through this non-traditional author co-citation counting contains more coherent author groups and is therefore considerably clearer. However, this picture represents fewer specialties in the research field being studied than that produced through the traditional first-author co-citation counting when the same number of top-ranked authors is selected and analyzed. Reasons for these effects are discussed

Noise, artifact and the uncanny in large scale digital photographic practice.

This dissertation explores the question: why, when encountering the products of many new technologies delivering information via a new media, do I often experience a feeling of disquiet or estrangement? I use the example of laser-photographic printing to explore the issue through a program of practice-based research. The outcome of this line of enquiry includes an original contribution via three series of large-format digital photographic works: Presenting "The Amazing Kriels", Home At Last, and Pure. In this thesis, which supports the main body of the research, that is, the practice-based research, I will briefly review the case for artefact as noise within photographic printing, articulate a significant difference between the artefact levels of traditional analogue and Lambda prints, present original dialogical evidence for estrangement in the latter, and identify it via readings of Sigmund Freud's "The Uncanny" and McLuhan's "The Gadget Lover", as a function of the uncanny. I will propose an original rewriting of McLuhan's ideas of "hot" and "cool" media, as well as the cycles of irritation/mediation repression within McLuhan's media theory as a direction for future research, and relate them to a shift from large-scale analogue photographic printing to Lambda printing

"Closing the R&D Gap, Evaluating the Sources of R&D Spending"

No full text
Both spending and tax policies have been implemented in the United States with the goal of stimulating private sector research and development (R&D). Karier questions whether current R&D policy, especially the research and experimentation tax credit, can contribute to closing the gap between nondefense expenditures on R&D in the United States and such expenditures in other countries, such as Japan and Germany. He also explores possible changes to our current R&D policy to make it more effective.

Coauthor prediction for junior researchers

No full text
Research collaboration can bring in different perspectives and generate more productive results. However, finding an appropriate collaborator can be difficult due to the lacking of sufficient information. Link prediction is a related technique for collaborator discovery; but its focus has been mostly on the core authors who have relatively more publications. We argue that junior researchers actually need more help in finding collaborators. Thus, in this paper, we focus on coauthor prediction for junior researchers. Most of the previous works on coauthor prediction considered global network feature and local network feature separately, or tried to combine local network feature and content feature. But we found a significant improvement by simply combing local network feature and global network feature. We further developed a regularization based approach to incorporate multiple features simultaneously. Experimental results demonstrated that this approach outperformed the simple linear combination of multiple features. We further showed that content features, which were proved to be useful in link prediction, can be easily integrated into our regularization approach. © 2013 Springer-Verlag

Wetting Characteristics of Laser-Ablated Hierarchical Textures Replicated by Micro Injection Molding

Texturing can be used to functionalize the surface of plastic parts and, in particular, to modify the interaction with fluids. Wetting functionalization can be used for microfluidics, medical devices, scaffolds, and more. In this research, hierarchical textures were generated on steel mold inserts using femtosecond laser ablation to transfer on plastic parts surface via injection molding. Different textures were designed to study the effects of various hierarchical geometries on the wetting behavior. The textures are designed to create wetting functionalization while avoiding high aspect ratio features, which are complex to replicate and difficult to manufacture at scale. Nano-scale ripples were generated over the micro-scale texture by creating laser-induced periodic surface structures. The textured molds were then replicated by micro-injection molding using polypropylene and poly(methyl methacrylate). The static wetting behavior was investigated on steel inserts and molded parts and compared to the theoretical values obtained from the Cassie–Baxter and Wenzel models. The experimental results showed correlations between texture design, injection molding replication, and wetting properties. The wetting behavior on the polypropylene parts followed the Cassie–Baxter model, while for PMMA, a composite wetting state of Cassie–Baxter and Wenzel was observed
