Hygrothermal performance of thermally upgraded log walls of an in-use cultural heritage building from the 17th century based on current and future climate scenario
Norway is a country with a tremendous number of historic buildings and maintaining these is important for several different reasons. However, climate change leads to a warmer and more humid environment which in turns leads to an increased risk of biological, chemical, and mechanical decay.
This master thesis has been centred around evaluating the hygrothermal performance of the log walls of the in-use cultural heritage building of Bentegården, located in Tønsberg. This building is the oldest of its kind in the city and has over the years been thermally upgraded through several different occasions. This has resulted in a building containing a large variety of solutions.
A 3D scanning has been performed to create a digital model of the building. Supplied by historical documentation, local knowledge and infrared thermography, this has created a basis for determining the hidden elements within the building envelope. Numerical simulations have been conducted for the different wall assemblies with current and future climate data primarily based on observed data from weather stations and a “business as usual” climate scenario.
The results indicated little to no risk of mould growth in the logs subjected to the current climate. However, there are evidently a greater risk of mould growth in the future according to the hygrothermal simulations, especially where the timber is not protected by exterior insulation
Transient U-value and moisture buffering effect of solid timber elements and interaction with various HVAC strategies
A hygroscopic material has the capability to absorb and release moisture from the surrounding environment, so-called moisture buffering. Wood holds excellent hygroscopic characteristics. A combination of hygrothermal properties allows the wood to potentially save energy, thus lower the ventilation rates. The purpose of this thesis is to evaluate the hygroscopic characteristics of wood and its effect when exposed to an indoor environment. Through laboratory experiments of solid timber elements and numerical simulations of a school building built in solid timber, the interaction between solid timber and the indoor environment will be investigated. The research attempt to bring answers to the following research questions:
•How does thermal transmittance of solid timber vary under different indoor environments?
•How does hygroscopic properties of solid timber affect the HVAC system and how the latter might be optimized
Denne oppgaven tar for seg hovedsakelig to
inne i rommet.
Under andre fase
eksperiment dag.

Hygrothermal numerical simulations of hybrid timber-based façade in Bergen, under current and future climate
A new hybrid timber façade has been developed by Staticus, Oslomet, Kaunas University and SINTEF with the goal of reducing the CO2 footprint with 70-75% and reduce the non-renewable primarily energy source with 53-56% by substituting aluminium with wood-based structures in the façade system. However, it is essential that the hybrid façade can withstand different climate conditions. A hygrothermal model in WUFI pro including two different sections of the façade will be developed. Both historical weather and future conditions will be assessed with a total of 6 different cases. One climate file is gathered manually with data from Seklima, while the other climate files are collected from WUFI and Meteonorm. The aim is to investigate if there is risk of mould growth in the construction for the location of Bergen. The results reveal that the aluminium-timber section poses no risk of mould growth. However, the section with insulation and thin sheet exceeds critical mould growth levels. Interestingly, historical climate cases tend to give more adverse results compared to future conditions. Additionally, the investigation of in-build moisture exacerbates the findings substantiall
overflate uten hygroskopiske egenskaper for latent varme. Resultatene av simuleringene i WUFI Plus viser

Impact of urban morphology on pressure coefficient on building facades and wind velocity in street canyons: The case of Oslo
This thesis aims to study how the pressure coefficients and wind velocity will vary within the city of Oslo, with changing urban morphology and aspect ratios. It is common in the modern society to erect high-rise buildings in front of already existing buildings. The study will simulate and investigate how this will impact the wind conditions in the existing urban environment.
To achieve this simulation, a CFD tool, Star CCM+ has been used. The geometry that have been used in Star CCM+ is originally gathered from Kartverket and is a SOSI file. A workflow of several programs was needed to finally import this SOSI file as a file format compatible with Star CCM+. An area from Barcode and to Løren in Oslo was chosen, as this has several kinds of urban areas, involving high-rise buildings, low-rise buildings, and older high-rise buildings. This geometry is divided in five different regions to fit Star CCM+ restrictions regarding domain size. An important part of this study was to achieve a good mesh solution and apply appropriate physics setting. Pressure coefficients does vary from region to region, Region 1 with high-rise buildings vary more internally in the region than Region 3 where the building mass is lower and much denser. It is also clear that the velocity is dependent on how dense the buildings are located and the aspect ratio of the streets and buildings
