Hypercalcaemia in systemic lupus erythematosus.
No full textHypercalcaemia is found in more than 90% of the cases of primitive hyperparathyroidism and malignancies. Rarely, D hypervitaminosis, sarcoidosis, other granulomatous diseases, some drugs, and endocrine diseases may be responsible. Nine patients with systemic lupus erythematosus (SLE) and hypercalcaemia, without evidence of primary hyperparathyroidism, have been previously described. Here we report the 10th patient with SLE and hypercalcaemia, along with a brief review of the literature. © 2011 The Author(s)
Effect of Betamethasone in combination with antibiotics on Gram positive and Gram negative bacteria
No full textBetamethasone is an anti-inflammatory steroid drug used in case of anaphylactic and allergic reactions, of Alzheimer and Addison diseases and in soft tissue injuries. It modulates gene expression for anti-inflammatory activity suppressing the immune system response. This latter effect might decrease the effectiveness of immune system response against microbial infections. Corticosteroids, in fact, mask some symptoms of infection and during their use may occur superimposed infections.
Thus the use of glucocorticoids in patients with sepsis remains extremely controversial.
In this study we analyzed the in vitro effect of commercially formulation of betamethasone (Bentelan) on several Gram positive and Gram negative bacteria of clinical relevance. It is found to be an inhibitor of the growth of most of the strains examined. Also the effect of betamethasone in combination with some classes of antibiotics was evaluated. Antibiotic-steroid combination therapy is, in such cases, superior to antibiotic-alone treatment to impair bacterial growths. Such effect was essentially not observable at all on Staphylococcus aureus or Coagulase Negative Staphylococci (CoNS)
Rupture of the patellar tendon after platelet-rich plasma treatment. A case report
No full textIntroduction: Rupture of the patellar tendon is becoming more and more frequent, even in sports activities overloading the extensor mechanism of the knee. Platelet-rich plasma (PRP) treatment has been recently introduced in treatment for several knee- and sport-related injuries including muscle strain cartilage defect and tendinopathies. The aim of this case report is to present a case of rupture of the patellar tendon occurred after injections of PRP. CASE REPORT: A case of a 40-year-old male soccer player sustaining a patellar tendon rupture after a series of 4 PRP injections. At surgery, a complete rupture in the middle of the patellar tendon was found, with severe degenerative changes of the tendon tissue. This case questions the actual efficacy and safety of PRP in severe degenerative tendinopathies

Dispelling the Myths Behind First-author Citation Counts
No full textWe conducted a full-scale evaluative citation analysis study of scholars in the XML research field to explore just how different from each other author rankings resulting from different citation counting methods actually are, and to demonstrate the capability of emerging data and tools on the Web in supporting more realistic citation counting methods. Our results contest some common arguments for the continued
use of first-author citation counts in the evaluation of scholars, such as high correlations between author rankings by first-author citation counts and other citation
counting methods, and high costs of using more realistic citation counting methods that are not well-supported by the ISI databases. It is argued that increasingly available digital full text research papers make it possible for citation analysis studies to go beyond what the ISI databases have directly supported and to employ more

Mutant huntingtin regulates EGF receptor fate in non-neuronal cells lacking wild-type protein
No full textHuntingtin (htt) is a scaffold protein localized at the subcellular level and is involved in coordinating the activity of several protein for signaling and intracellular transport. The emerging properties of htt in intracellular trafficking prompted us to study the role of mutant htt (polyQ-htt) in the intracellular fate of epidermal growth factor receptor (EGFR), whose activity seems to be strictly regulated by htt. In particular, to evaluate whether protein trafficking dysfunction occurs in non-neuronal cells in the absence of functional htt, we monitored the EGFR protein in fibroblasts from homozygotic HD patients and their healthy counterpart. We found that polyQ-htt controls EGFR degradation and recycling. Lack of wild-type htt caused alteration of the ubiquitination cycle, formation of EGFR-incorporating high-molecular weight protein aggregates and abnormal EGFR distribution in endosomes of the degradation and recycling pathways after EGF stimulation. PolyQ-htt-induced alteration of EGFR trafficking affected cell migration and proliferation, at least in part, through inhibition of ERK signaling. To our knowledge the data here reported represent the first signaling and phenotypic characterization of polyQ-htt involvement in the modulation of growth factor stimulation in non-neuronal cells. © 2012 Elsevier B.V
